Analysis and Synthesis

The student I chose for this case study is a grade 4 student from Marempey Elementary
School. I will call him Alehandro Caalim. Alehandro is a lazy student having difficulty in
reading, he can read Tagalog or Pilipino but only few words and basic words, he has hard time in
English and he said that “English is the most hated subject”, at his age of 11 years old he is only
grade 4. Based on what we observed to him, he seldom to go in school although he woke up
early and went to school on time, but his teacher always marked him absent. We discovered that
he did not go to school and he chooses to play with his friends. Alehandro has 3 siblings: an
oldest is an ALS student who is currently enrolled at Anda Central School, the 2nd oldest is a
grade 5 student. He came from the poor family whose the father is fisherman and his mother is a
housewife. According to his father he doesn’t have stable income to support his family that’s
why his oldest son is a late student. His oldest son is working in Sual under FN Garcia Fishing
Company.

Alehandro’s current 4th grade teacher Mam ______________ says the he doesn’t go to
school every day and he missed a lot of quizzes and activities. The teacher is afraid that
Alehandro will fail his 4th grade and repeat his grade level. He needs to catch up other important
projects and assignments to pass his subjects. His 3rd grade Miss __________ says he needs
attention particular to guidance and loving of family. His 2nd grade Miss ____________ says I
passed him because he has good attendance although he came late at my class. His examination
results during my time were always passing grades. I noticed that he doesn’t have any snacks
during their recess time. He came on school with empty stomach that’s why I always gave him
snacks.

I continued to collect information about Mark by visiting his home. They lived in small
house made in sawali and nipa hat. The house is not learning environment and the family were
too busy. I looked Mark and his bag is old and his notebooks were only few. He has pen and
pencils and old books inside the bag. I asked her mother Mrs. _______________ and she said
that she was only elementary undergraduate when she got pregnant from his first child. Her
husband Mr. ____________ is a fisherman and part time carpenter. When I asked the mother
where did she get financial support to their children? She said: income from fishing of his
husband and from the wage of his oldest son. And when we talked about the study of his son
Alehandro she said that always attending school every day without knowing that Alehandro is
always escaping on his class. She also said that she did not see any assignments or projects
presented by Alehandro and she may wonder that Alehandro will finish his entire task inside
their classroom. And when we mentioned about his grades, she smiled at me and said “puro
palakul”.

Moreover, we asked his mother to tell us his previous grades she said that “I’m contented
to see him passing the subjects rather than he failed”. His mother was neglected guidance and
supervision of his son to his studies and only focus on how they will live day by day.

When we talk Alehandro about what he needs to learn and what he needs to improve in his
subjects. He is so shy to tell us that he cannot read very well particularly Tagalog/Pilipino and
English.

We gave him simple passage using Marungko Technique to test his reading skills.
Marungko Technique is the ______________________________________________________
