Let’s Elaborate & Explain

In our study of polygons, we have learned that a polygon separates a plane into three
sets of points there are the polygon itself, points in the interior (inside) of the polygon, and
points in the exterior (outside) of the polygon.
An Interior angle of a polygon is an angle inside the polygon at one of its vertices.
An Exterior angle of a polygon is an angle outside the polygon formed by one of its
sides and the extension of an adjacent side. The number of exterior angles always equals
the number of sides.
Convex Polygon is a shape that is formed out of a straight side and that does not
curve in or no angle pointing inwards.
The following diagrams give the formulas for the sum of the interior angles of a
polygon and the sum of exterior angles of a polygon:
Sum of The measure of Sum of
Number of
Polygon Interior each interior angle Exterior

Angles of a regular polygon Angles
Triangle 3 180° 60° 360°
Quadrilateral 4 360° 90° 360°
Pentagon 5 540° 108° 360°
Hexagon 6 720° 120° 360°
….

Any Polygon n (n – 2) x 180° 360°

Notice that every time we add aside, the sum of the angles increases by 180. There is a
formula for this:
Where:
S – is the sum of the angles
n – is the total number of sides
Regular Polygons: All sides and all angles are congruent.
After knowing the total sum of the interior angles, we can divide by the number of
angles to determine the degree measure of each angle. We can also do this for the degree
measures of the exterior angles, by dividing the 360 by the total number of angles.
Interior and Exterior Angles of a Convex Polygon
For an Interior angle and an Exterior angle, we may use a formula to determine the
degree measure of each angle.
Example 1: Find the sum of the interior angle of the regular pentagon.
Formula: (n – 2) (180°)
= (5-2) (180°)
= (3) (180°)
= 540°
Example 2: Find the measure of one interior angle of the regular pentagon.
Formula: (n – 2) (180°)/n
= (5-2) (180°)/5
= (3) (180°)/5
=108°
Example 3: Find the measure of one exterior angle of the regular pentagon.
Formula: 360°/n
= 360°/5
= 72° or

x + x + x + x + x = 360°
5x = 360°
x = 72°

Lesson
PROBLEM SOLVING INVOLVING
9 SIDES AND ANGLES OF A POLYGON

Example 4: Use the figure at the right.

X° 71°

Find the value of x.

135° 112°
Solution:
The polygon is quadrilateral. Use the Corollary to the Polygon Interior Angles
Theorem to write an equation involving x. Then solve the equation.
x° + 135° + 112° + 71° = 360°
x + 318 = 360
x = 42
Example 5: Find the number of sides of a polygon.
The sum of the measures of the interior angles of a convex polygon is 900°. Classify
the polygon by the number of sides.
Solution:
Use the Polygon Interior Angles Theorem to write an equation involving the number
of sides n. Then solve the equation to find the number of sides.
(n - 2) (180°) = 900°
n–2=5
n=7
Therefore, the polygon has 7 sides. It is a heptagon.

the exterior angles d, e, f.
Determine the following sum of angles:
4. a + d = _________
5. (a + d) + (b + e) + (c + f) = _________
6. a + b + c = _________
7. Josh says that the missing angle is 72°. Do you agree with Josh? Explain why?

32°

40° ?

8. The measures of three of the interior angles

Let’s Remember

Let us summarize what we have learned from this module.

An Interior Angle of a polygon is an angle inside the polygon at one of its vertices.
Formula: (n – 2) x 180°
An Exterior Angle of a polygon is an angle outside the polygon formed by one of its
sides and the extension of an adjacent side. The number of exterior angles always equals
the number of sides.

Formula:

Convex Polygon is a shape that is formed out of a straight side and that does not curve
in or no angle pointing inwards.
Let’s Apply
Activity 3: For this activity, each person in your group should draw a different version of the
same polygon.
For example, if your group is creating hexagons, try to think of different ways you could draw
a hexagon.
Step 1: Draw the polygon. Carefully measure all the interior angles, then find the sum.
Step 2: Share your results with your group. If you measured carefully, you should all have
the same sum!
Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 with different polygons or share results with other groups.
