Environmental Compliance Officer


The contents of this job description must be used in association with the KSB for this role. The job description summarises the key
responsibilities for the role (Technical, Business and People) and the KSB provides the detail for the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours
required to carry out the role competently. This job description gives an overview of the role and as such you will be required to
undertake any other duties as requested. You may also need to refer to company regulations which will also form an additional part
of your job description.

Standard Role Summary:


Ensure environmental compliance for the ship, by providing oversight and assistance to all departments in complying
with international, federal, state and corporate laws and regulations.

Primary Responsibility of the Role:


Direct and manage the Waste Disposal Team ensuring the effective segregation, treatment and disposal of shipboard
waste. Ensure staff are competent to undertake their roles by identifying training needs and coaching and mentoring
junior team members. Ensure environmental legislation is adhered to and policies and practices are adopted throughout
the ship, helping to plan, implement, monitor and review both protective and preventative measures. Regularly and
consistently review overall compliance by carrying out environmental ship 'rounds' and support the Captain by ensuring
HESS meetings are effective and deliver improvements to environmental compliance.

Attend corporate sponsored social events as requested.

Qualifications
Environmental degree or equivalent or Licensed Engineer holding a Class Two certificate of
competency or equivalent marine engineering experience
Good command of written and spoken English
Passed Marlins English test of Proficiency (where applicable)
Certificates Valid ENG1 medical certificate or equivalent for the duration of each voyage

HESS (Health, Environment, Safety and Security)


Knowledge/Skill Summary of Responsibilities
Health and Safety Lead by example by taking care of the health and safety of self and others
Report all accidents, ‘near miss’ incidents and work related ill health conditions to Senior Officer
and Safety department
Follow safety rules and procedures
Ensure all work equipment, personal protective equipment, substances, and safety devices are
used correctly
Ensure that all security equipment is properly operated, tested, calibrated and maintained

Take part in safety training & risk assessments and suggest ways of reducing risks
Carry out risk assessments within designated area of responsibility
Actively promote safe working within teams and encourage safe behaviours
Undertake safety 'walk rounds' within own area identifying areas of improvement
Public Health Follow all company public health policies and procedures appropriate to the role
Complete all necessary public health paperwork accurately
Institute appropriate public health precautions as relevant to role
Environment Ensure the team are aware of their Environmental responsibilities as defined by ISO 14001 and
as stipulated by Carnival UK
Apply company procedures regarding Environmental Management consistently across the
department
Monitor compliance to environmental legislation and effectively deal with areas of concern
Carefully manage the environmental impacts of all tasks under own responsibility
Emergency Duties Understand own emergency duties and routines onboard ship
Take an active part in the ship’s team response to an incident
Ensure familiar with ship’s emergency alarms and routines
Ensure familiar in the use of all fire fighting appliances located within area of responsibility
Ensure familiar in the use of the ship’s life saving appliances and equipment including lifeboats
and liferafts
Participate fully in all relevant drills and training
Know how to raise the alarm when necessary
Able to identify escape routes and emergency exits
Understand the function and operation of fire screen / splash tight and watertight doors
Collate crew muster lists, ensure all personnel are accounted for and report any issues
Undertake mustering of own department and ensure all personnel are accounted for
Ensure supervisors receive adequate training to undertake their duties and make sound
decisions
As holder of PSC & RB may be in charge or 2nd in charge of a survival craft and therefore
responsible for the safety and well being of persons inside
Maintain order of the survival craft during abandonment of the vessel, ensure survival
procedures are followed at all times and that all members of the survival craft crew are fully
trained and understand their responsibilities
Undertake other emergency duties / routines within the ERP as directed
Undertake any other emergency duties required that are specific to vessel
Follow all emergency procedures as directed
Safeguarding Aware of CUK safeguarding children policies and procedures
Report any concerns of a safeguarding nature to the Designated Safeguarding Person (DSP)
Security Apply the correct security measures for own department / area
Lead and direct the team in applying security measures and actively promote understanding of
security issues
Encourage security awareness within the team

Technical

Environmental Work with shore-side operational groups and waste vendors to indentify suitable ports to
Management and offload waste in an efficient and economical way
Compliance Ensure all waste subject to special handling requirements is managed properly
Consistently monitor all onboard waste handling, identifying high risk areas and providing
recommendations
Complete, collate, submit and file all logs completely and accurately
Maintain databases and carry out incident reporting
Compile environmental metrics and other measurables for submission to shore side
Complete and update environmental cruise plan in liaison with Chief Engineer and Navigator
Advise Officers of efficient and effective options for waste management during the cruise
Observe, monitor and feedback on environmental compliance across all ship areas
Ensure Shore management is immediately notified when pollution prevention equipment is
inoperable for more than 48 hours
Drive environmental awareness and improvements by instigating and co-ordinating campaigns
Train others in the use of environmental policies and procedures as they apply to their
department
Conduct environmental rounds with relevant shipboard personnel
Confidently and professionally deal with any environmental incidents and formal audits /
inspections
Proactively identify and assist in resolving any environmental concerns on board ship
Liaise with local Port authorities and other shore side officials regarding environmental matters
including vessel checks
Interpret information from and appropriately question port authorities to fully understand
requirements
Emergency Co-ordinate and control emergency response when necessary
Response Follow the correct onward reporting process and emergency response plans
Environmental Provide support and guidance to others when dealing with environmental incidents
Management Fully understand international and local environmental regulations
Proactively review progress of activities and look for situations where environmental integrity
may be breached, reporting any incidents and working to avoid incidents where possible
Maintenance Retrieve and update machinery maintenance information for the garbage room via CMMS
Management Raise and monitor jobs within CMMS inputting information regarding defective equipment
Systems
Tech Safety Skills Monitor the safe use of tools by the Waste Disposal Team and provide coaching and instruction
where required
Ensure that the team are supplied with and correctly attired in PPE
Ensure that safety instructions are strictly adhered to at all times
Undertake chemical risk assessments in liaison with Department Heads and Supervisors
