Primary Shrinkage Stresses
If the bridge is free to expand and flex (i.e. is statically determinate), the axial force and bending
moment will be released. The axial load will be released by the beam contracting and the bending
moment will be released by the beam sagging. After the shrinkage axial force and bending moment
have been released, the resulting residual stress distribution is referred to as the ‘primary shrinkage
stresses.’
