Strength of Material is a core technology subject that aims at enabling the student to
understand and analyze various types of loads, stresses, and strains along with the main
causes of changes in physical properties and failure of machine parts. All Mechanical
Engineering components are subjected to different loadings and behave in a specific way.
The subject is a prerequisite for understanding the principles of machine design and the
strengths of various materials used in industries. Understanding the mechanical properties of
materials will help in selecting suitable materials for various engineering applications.

Micro-Project Report
Torsion testing is a kind of mechanical testing that estimates the properties of materials or
devices while under stress from angular displacement. Torsion testing can be divided into two
different types: testing raw materials like metal wires or plastic tubing to determine properties
such as shear strength and modulus, or functional testing of finished products subjected to
torsions, such as screws, pharmaceutical bottles, and sheathed cables. The most typical
mechanical properties measured by torsion testing are modulus of elasticity in shear, yield
shear strength, ultimate shear strength, modulus of rupture in shear, and ductility.
Multiple products and components are subjected to torsional forces during their
operation. Torsion testing is required when engineers wish to change or update the materials
utilized in these products. For example, the metal utilized in vehicle drive trains experiences a
complicated combined loading when in usage, with torsion being the main component. An
engineer attempting to design a more fuel-efficient vehicle may need to change the material
of the driveshaft in order to reduce vehicle weight. Torsional testing can assist the engineer to
determine an appropriate material that will possess the required torsional strength while also
contributing to the goal of lightweight.
4
Numerous finished products are also subjected to torsional forces during their operation.
Products such as biomedical tubing, switches, and fasteners are just a few devices subjected
to torsional stresses in their daily use. By testing their products in torsion, manufacturers are
capable to simulate real-life service conditions, checking product quality, verifying designs,
and ensuring proper manufacturing methods.
5
TYPES OF TORSION TESTS
Torsion tests can be accomplished by applying only a rotational motion or by applying both
axial (tension or compression) and torsional forces. Types of torsion testing differ from
product to product but can usually be categorized as failure, proof, or product operation
testing.
Torsion Only: Applying only torsional loads to the test specimen.
Axial-Torsion: Applying both axial (tension or compression) and torsional forces to the test
specimen.
Failure Testing: Twisting the product, component, or specimen until failure. Failure can be
classified as either a physical break or a kink/defect in the specimen.
Proof Testing: Applying a torsional load and holding this torque load for a fixed amount of
time.
Functional Testing: Testing complete assemblies or products such as bottle caps, switches,
dial pens, or steering columns to verify that the product performs as expected under torsion
loads.
Torsion testing can be executed on any one of several other testing systems relying on the
specific application. Some labs choose a dedicated torsion-only testing system such as
Instron's MT MicroTorsion Series, while others may choose to adapt their existing universal
testing machine with a Torsion Add-On 3.0 fixture that allows the system to achieve biaxial
testing. Functional testing of finished products is often executed on a dynamic fatigue system
such as Instron's Electropuls.

CALCULATING RESULTS
The torque vs rotation curve created by testing raw materials in torsion is in numerous ways
analogous to the force-displacement curve caught during axial testing. Most materials show
an identical linear area, representing the shear modulus, followed by yield and ultimate
failure.

Conclusion
Torsion testing involves the twisting of a sample along an axis and is a good test for
obtaining information like torsional shear stress, maximum torque, shear modulus, and
breaking angle of a material or the interface between two materials.
