LESSON :1

CULTURE according to EDWARD B. TYLOR culture encompasses beliefs, practices, values, attitudes, laws,
family, church, school etc.

SOCIETY defined as interaction where common culture can be shared.

POPULAR CULTURE can be defined as the products and forms of expression and identity.

-mass element produced by Theodore Adorno refers to the “culture industry” (Crothers, 2021).

-SOURCES mass media, music, film, television, radio, internet, books, via cellphone.

-Popular Culture is also influenced by professional entites that provide public information

-FORMATION masses were influenced by dogmatic forms of rule and tradition dedicated by folk culture
and the key ingredients are urbanization (18 century).

-THREE PILLARS pop culture identifies us, challenges us, unites us

LESSON :2

PRE-COLONIAL -Politics, Religion, Economic, Culture, Societies have something to do with religion,
government, public monuments, laws.

a. Mode of Dressing - baro/camisa, saya/patadyang, bahag etc.


b. Oranments - gold armlets, rings, necklace, filling teeth
c. Social Classes - Nobles, Free men, Dependent
d. Marriage Customs – dowry or bigay kaya, panghihimuyat, bigay suso, himaraw, sambon etc.

POLITICS – malay word balangay, meaning boat. Barangay were headed by chieftains called datu

RELIGION – pre-co filipinos believe in immortality if the soul and in life after death.

Ex: Bathalang maykapal (creator), idinayale (god of agri), sidapa (god of death) etc.

a. Burial practices were part of religion. The dead were place in wooden coffin or buried under
house.

ECONOMIC LIFE Agriculture main source of livelihood that done in two ways: kaingin system (slash
burn) and tillage.

CULTURE Malayan in structure and form


a. Languages tagalog, iloco, Pangasinan, sugbuhanon, Hiligaynon
b. System of writing filipinos wrote on bark of trees, leaves, bamboo tubes using knives and
daggers.
c. Literature bugtong(riddle), suliranin (street songs), sabi(maxim) etc.
d. Song Dance Drama kudyapi bansic (tagalog), malay abafila (igorots), kutibeng guitar (Ilocano)

SPANISH ERA Bahay na Bato, the colonial Filipino house, is a mixture of native Filipino, Spanish, and
Chinese influence.

SOCIETY :

nipa hut (Bahay Kubo) icon of Philippine culture as it represents the Filipino value of bayanihan.

“Bahay na Bato” became a typical house of Filipino noble.

RELIGION:

Spaniards introduced Christianity where Filipino should be baptized and be converted to Christians.
