flowers for medicinal purposes, demonstrating a deep knowledge of the properties of the plants he
collects, and alerting the reader to what may be to come. It may still be under copyright in other
countries. The plot is based on an Italian tale translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus
and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in
1567. It is for certain that Romeo and Juliet’s play had already been performed by 1597 after the
first quarto was published. There is never just one side to, or interpretation of, any event in this play.
