Volume and Surface Area of a Pyramid and Cone

1. The Pyramid - Volume and Surface Area

(a) Volume of a pyramid

square-based pyramid triangular-based pyramid

1
Volume of a pyramid = base area  height
3

(b) Surface area of pyramid

The total surface area of a pyramid is found by finding the total surface area of each
face and them out.

A square-based pyramid has 5 faces: a square and 4 triangles

A rectangular-based pyramid has 5 faces: a rectangle and 4 triangles

A triangular-based pyramid has 4 faces, all triangles

Worksheet 1 - Volume and Surface Area of a Pyramid

1. Find the volume of each solid:

(a) A right pyramid has a square base of side 7 cm and its height is 5 cm.
(b) The height of a tetrahedron (triangular pyramid) is 6 cm and its base is a
triangle of area 24 cm2.

2. The Cone - Volume and Surface Area

Note: h = height of a cone

l = slant height
l
r = base radius h

r
(a) Volume of a cone
1
Volume of a cylinder = 3 base area  height
1
Volume of a cylinder =  r2  h
3

1
Volume of a cone = r2 h
3

(b) Surface area of a cone

Surface area of a cone = curved surface area + base (circle)

= rl + r2

Curved Surface Area of a cone = rl

Total Surface area of a cone = rl + r2

Worksheet 2 - The Cone - Volume and surface area

1. Find the volume and curved surface area of each or these cones:

(a) height = 12 cm, radius = 9 cm, slant height = 15 cm

(b) height = 27 cm, radius = 12.5 cm l
h
(c) height = 0.40 m, slant height = 0.50 m
(d) slant height = 8.3 cm, radius = 2.0 cm
r
(e) diameter = 9.6 m, height = 21.5 m

2. The cone below has height = 8 cm and base radius = 6cm.

Work out: l
8 cm
(a) the volume of the cone
(b) the total surface area of the cone 6 cm

3. The volume of a cone is 400 cm3. The height is 10 cm.

Work out:
(a) the radius l

3. Volume of a frustum

A frustum of a cone or pyramid is formed by cutting the top of a cone or pyramid.

Volume of a Frustum (of a cone) = Volume of large Cone  Volume of small cone

Volume of a Frustum (of a pyramid) = Volume of large pyramid  Volume of small pyramid
