1 THE SCHOOL
Foreign Language Specialized School (Vietnamese: "Truong
Trung hoc Pho thong Chuyen Ngoai Ngu"), commonly known
as FLSS or CNN, is a national public magnet high school
founded in 1969 by the Minister of Education and Training.
FLSS is one of the three national gifted high schools in Hanoi,
and is a part of the University of Language and International
Studies - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

There are 14 subjects in the school’s curriculum, including
enriched classes in Math, and two foreign language courses
(one specialized course and one elective).

Admission and Class Categorization
The competitive admission exam to the Foreign Language
Specialized School contains three parts: one exam on a declared
foreign language; one exam on mathematics and natural science;
and one exam on literature and social science.
FLSS is one of the most selective high schools in Vietnam with an
acceptance rate of only 10.9% in 2017.
The school assigns students to classes based on their choice of
specialized foreign language and admission exam scores. As of
September 2018, there are 48 classes in the school, distributed
into seven groups of languages: English, French, Japanese,
Chinese, German, Russian, and Korean. While sharing the same
academic standard, each group has its own culture and practice,
which creates a highly diversified environment.

3 Student Activities
Foreign Language Specialized School is famous for its extracurricular activities.
The school has a wide variety of clubs created and led by students. Clubs’ activities
are either sponsored by the school or other organizations, allowing students to
freely express themselves, to build healthy social lives, and discover their passion
and interests outside classes. Currently, there are 16 clubs including Team CNN
Leaders (TCL), CNN English Club (CEC), CNN Music Club (CMC), CNN Shine
(Community-based Activity Club), CNN Zoom (The School’s Magazine), etc.
Foreign Language Specialized School also has annual events that have become the
signature of the school such as 10+ Ten Plus Orientation Program, CNN’s Colors,
Literature Adaptation, Sports Festival, etc.
Grading System
Students receive unweighted numeric grades on a 10.0 scale for each semester
and for the entire school year. The subject grade for a school year is calculated by
the following formula:

The overall GPA of each study period is the mean of 13 subjects’ grades (not
including Physical Education) in that study period.
There are four levels in the classification of an average GPA:
Grade A (Excellent): 8.0 - 10.0
