ASPHALT AND BITUMEN

INTRODUCTION
Working with asphalt and or bitumen often carries a double risk. A primary risk from working with
very hot materials, and a secondary risk from the location, normally roads and roofs!

WHY?
Reduce the risk of injury: The correct use of safe working arrangements tied in with worker
education will eliminate the vast majority of injury sustained by persons working asphalt or bitumen
and in the vicinity of streets and roads
Avoid prosecution: Any interference with free flowing traffic as a result of inappropriate street or
roadwork activity may lead to prosecution by the police.
Public relations: The bad publicity arising from incidents of accident or injury in the vicinity of street
and road works can seriously damage the reputation of a company.
