Operating Recommendations for the Safety Analog Module

The safety analog module from Bihl+Wiedemann can assume various conditions which require an action.
These include:

1. The set working range / threshold is undershot / overshot

2. Hardware defect on the module inputs

These conditions are described in the following.

1. The set working range / threshold is undershot / overshot.

This is a condition which does not require an error acknowledgment. As soon as the value returns to the valid
range, the output is turned on again. If no automatic start is used, the start enable must be issued
which was set in the monitored start by module module.

2. Hardware defect on module inputs
When there is a hardware defect on the inputs, such as wire break, short circuit or exceeded maximum signal
tolerance between the input channels, the module goes into fault mode.
This is an error which must be acknowledged.

Fig. 1-3. Representation of the signal tolerance setting

2.1 How can the error be identified?

• In ASIMON360: the module for the safe input flashes red in the diagnostics view
• On the module: the signal LEDs F1 and F2 flash yellow at 1 Hz, the ASi LED and the Fault LED flash
alternately (peripheral error is displayed on the device)

• On the gateway display: shows a peripheral error at the affected address

• In the controller: in the IDI diagnostics (shown in section <Acknowledging in the controller (recom-
mended)>)
The error can be acknowledged either from the controller or via ASi. Both methods for acknowledging are
shown in the following.

2.2 Acknowledging in the controller (recommended)
After eliminating the error it can then be acknowledged. When acknowledging the error in the controller the
diagnostics (IDI) for the safe addresses (threshold values) must be evaluated. In the following example these
are the safe addresses 3 and 4 (the module has configuration address 2A):

Fig. 1-4. Configuring the analog module in ASIMON360

When the error occurs the following information is sent to the PLC:

Note:
The status signals for the IDI are only sent if Enable substitute value is not checked in the head sta-
tion.

Module K1 from GSD/ GSDML file with start address 100:

Module E-address A-address
K1: 32 Byte DEA (0-31B) 100 … 131 100 … 131

Evaluation (IDI diagnostic) E-address, slave 3 (byte 101)

Bit 3 Bit 2 Bit 1 Bit 0
101.3 101.2 101.1 101.0
x x 0 0 Outside the range
x x 1 1 Within range
0 0 x x No error
1 1 x x Hardware defect – must be acknowledged by global release
1 0 x x The head module (2A) must be acknowledged with a pos. edge for max. 2s
on DO2 (x.6)

Evaluation (IDI diagnostics) E-address, slave 4 (byte 102)
Bit 3 Bit 2 Bit 1 Bit 0
102.7 102.6 102.5 102.4
Hardware status status
x x 0 0 Outside the range
x x 1 1 Within range
0 0 x x No error
1 1 x x Hardware defect – must be acknowledged by global release
1 0 x x The head module (2A) must be acknowledged with a pos. edge for max. 2s
on DO2 (x.6)
As soon as the PLC detects 11xx in the more significant bits (bits 2 and 3) for the IDI diagnostic of the
slaves, the global error release for acknowledging must be activated (edge-triggered).
1 1 x x Hardware defect – must be acknowledged by global release
The global acknowledgment (global error release) can be performed for example by an ASi Light Button
Module (BW2528). In the example the global error release is triggered by pressing the lower button on the
ASi Light Button Module. The fieldbus may also be used for acknowledging.

Fig. 1-5. Setting the global error release in the safety monitor

After the global acknowledgment the status of the IDI diagnostic is changed. Bits 2 and 3 change their state
from 1 1 to 1 0:
1 0 x x The head module (2A) must be acknowledged with a positive edge for max.
2s on DO2 (x.6)
Now the digital output bit DO2 for the configuration address of the module (address 2A) must be activated, in
this example:

Byte 101:
Bit 3 Bit 2 Bit 1 Bit 0
101.7 101.6 101.5 101.4
Once the hardware defect has been cleared, the safe output can be turned on again.

2.3 Acknowledgment using the configuration in the ASi master
After eliminating the error it can now be acknowledged. To acknowledge this error in the device we recom-
mend use of the sample program Acknowledging the analog module after
a hardware defect on the safe inputs. This must be used once for each analog module.
To use the example either the safety monitor in the sample configuration can be replaced or the release cir-
cuits from the example configuration copied.

Fig. 1-6. Copying the safe output module allows the complete release circuit to be copied.

In the example program the signal for the global error release for the first step was set to the output bit 0 of
a simulated slave at address 31. This allows global error release to be activated in the controller. At the
same time actuating the global error release sets the digital output DO2.
Once the hardware defect has been eliminated the safe output can be turned on again.
