Chapter I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the

background of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the study, and

scope and delimitation of the study.

Background of the Study

As we are in the modernized era, we are always connected to technology

especially to mobile phone. Mobile phone nowadays is considered as needs

because of the ability to help students. They use mobile phone on a daily basis

including in languange learning. Such as learning supported with mobile devices is

called mobile learning, which seems beneficial especially to the unique features of

mobile applications (eg., interactivity, ubiquity and porability) and teachers’

encouragement and feedback (Kacetl & Klimová, 2019).

Due to this, several studies have examined the relationship between mobile

phone usage (Yanqing Lin et al., 2021) and students’ academic achievement

(Blanka Klimovà, 2019).

According to a study funded by (Onur Sapci et al., 2021), the smartphone use

was associated with lower grades and decreased academic productivity. However,

mobile phones are undeniably convenient, helpful tools for study and can be a hurtful

source of distraction depending on the attitude and use pattern of a student (Md

Moyazzrm Hossain, 2019).

On the study of (Cong Qi, 2019), students’ academic usage of mobile devices

does not lead to technostress; on the other hand, it helps in enchancing academic

performance.
In the Philippines, there is not enough related literature or evidence to

confirmed that mobile phone has a connection to students’ academic achievement,

not performance. Still, the aim of this study is to identify if there is a connection

between mobile phone and academic achievement of Grade 12 ICT students of

Tunasan National High School.

Fig. 1 The Conceptual Framework of the Study

The level of Grade 12 ICT students’ mobile phone usage will be described in the research in
terms of three sub-variables: (a) forms of mobile phone; (b) frequency of mobile phone use; and
(c)mode of mobile phone use. In the research, this variable is seen to possess a hypothesized
relationship with Grade 12 ICT students’ academic achievement. This hypothesized relationship is
represented by the two-headed arrow connecting both variables.

Statement of the Problem

This study generally aims to determine if mobile phone usage has a

significant relationship with Grade 12 ICT student academic achievement.

Specifically, this study shall seek answers to the following questions:

1. What is the level of mobile phone usage of Grade 12 ICT Students of

Tunasan National High School (TNHS) in terms of :

a. forms of mobile phone?

b. frequency of mobile phone use?

c. mode of social media use?

2. What is the academic achievement of Grade 12 ICT students of TNHS?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the frequency of mobile phone use

and the academic achievement of Grade 12 ICT students of TNHS?

Research Hypothesis(es)

There is no significant relationship between the frequency of mobile phone

use and the academic achievement of Grade 12 ICT students of TNHS.

Scope and Delimitation

The study is a correlational research focusing on the relationship between

mobile phone usage in academic achievement of 30 SHS students of Tunasan

National High School under the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in

the academic year, 2023-2024.

Furthermore, this research is limited to the specified grade level and school,

and does not include other grade levels and schools that were not mentioned. The

research does not include topics unrelated to the Relationship between Mobile

Phone Usage in Academic Achievement, such as procrastination and other topics.

Significance of the Study

This study will be able to contribute research-based data and knowledge on

the possible relationship between mobile phone usage and their academic

achievement. Furthermore, the society, in general can make informed decisions that

are relevant to this area.

More specifically, this study shall be beneficial to the various groups of people.
Students, the results of this study will assist students become more aware of

their mobile phone usage habits and encourage responsible use, which may result in

improved academic performance.

Teachers, will be able to gain information into how students’ use of mobile

phones affect their concentration as well as their participation in class, allowig them

to adjust their teaching strategies properly.

Parents, they will gain a better understanding of their children’s mobile phone

ways and how they may affect their performance in school, allowing them to provide

guidance as well as support.

Other researchers, future researchers in ICT strand can apply the findings of

this study to further investigate the complex relationship between mobile phone

usage and academic achievements.
