Installation Requirements
Approvals
Sea-Chest installations must be approved on a case-by-case basis with regard to the vessel’s national
registry and corresponding maritime authority. The ship owner and shipyard performing the installation
are responsible for obtaining installation approval.
Power supply
We strongly recommend the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). The UPS should have the
ability to maintain power for 10 minutes, this allows shut off and retraction of the equipment in the case
of a power failure.
Dry Dock
Ensure proper clearance under Sea-Chest for sonar installation. Avoid placing supporting blocks in the
area of the Sea-Chest. In the Note section of this manual log the position of the Sea-Chest for future
reference.
Wiring
All cables must be supported or protected along its entire length. Conduit or cable trays should be used.
Cables must be installed so as not to run in the areas of high-power supplies, antenna cables or other
sources of interference.

E) DO NOT try to adjust the frequency while the vessel is moving.
GPS Connection:
For best sonar performance the G.P.S. input inside the Computer Interface Unit must be
connected to the boats G.P.S. Check the Amber LED labeled G.P.S. IN found inside
Computer Interface Unit on the 1872 Host board is flashing. (See NMEA and
G.P.S. Wiring Hookup on pg 35)
35
NMEA and G.P.S. Wiring Hook-up
(Computer On)
Diagram 10.1
The RS-232 In allows other equipment to send data strings to the MAQ Sonar.
The RS-232 Out allows the MAQ Sonar to send data strings to other equipment.
The G.P.S. Input requires a NMEA 0183 data sentence from a G.P.S., which contains RMC.
This is the preferred sentence to provide latitude and longitude readout on the display. If RMC is
not available VTG & TDS will provide wake trail but not latitude and longitude display.
COMPUTER ON:
These terminals are used to turn on PC’s with ATX power supplies.
Computers with ATX power supplies use a momentary switch to the power ON/OFF. A pulse is
required to turn the power ON/OFF. These terminals must be directly connected to the computers
motherboard ON/OFF connection. See Personal Computer ATX Power Interface on page 25.
36
Synchronization Wiring Diagram

The Sync. Output Active is used to synchronize or key other equipment. A pulse is generated at
the beginning of each transmit cycle as shown above. On the Set-up Panel “STP” of the MAQ
Sonar display the setting “TX” Transmit must be set to “ON”. “ON” is the standard operating
position. (Transformer Isolated)
The Sync. Output Passive works the same as the Sync. Output Active but uses an active TTL
grounding pulse to trigger or key external equipments. (Optically Isolated)
The Sync. Input is used to synchronize or key the MAQ Sonar from other equipment. (Optically
Isolated)
37
Inclinometer Alignment
Installation:
1. The Inclinometer can be found inside the Computer Interface
Unit.
2. A sticker on the side of the Inclinometer indicates the side that
must face the stern.
3. Loosen the thumbscrew on the Inclinometer-mounting arm.
4. Position the inclinometer with the stern side facing the proper
direction and level the bubble indicator on the top of the
Inclinometer. (As shown)
5. Tighten the thumbscrew firmly to fix the position of the Inclinometer.
6. Inclinometer must be aligned for transmitter beam stabilization in the direction of the cursor.
Stabilization is only available in Track and Search Modes Ref. Mode Control (MC) Operators
Manual (CH 2).
Electronic Calibration:
On the “STP” Set-up Panel of the sonar there is a selection for the
type of Inclinometer being used. Read the letter indicated on the top
of the Inclinometer and
set the “INC” Inclinometer Type to the appropriate letter Ref.
Operators Manual (CH 3).
On the “OPR” Panel under the “MC” Mode Control Selection set the
sonar to either “TR” Track Mode or “SR” Search Mode to adjust the
Inclinometer.
There is a software adjustment.
On the “SYS” System Panel 2 readouts will appear port & bow. (Shown in blue rectangle) These
two readouts will indicate how close to level the Inclinometer that has been installed. “BW” Bow
Adjust and “PT” Port Adjust must be adjusted to zero the port and bow readouts Ref. Operators
Manual (CH 10).
Test:
After adjusting the level and direction of the Inclinometer the
stabilizer can be tested by tilting down to an angle that displays a
bottom ring in “OD” Omni Directional Mode. As the vessel rolls this
ring moves in and out. Set the “MC” Mode Control to “TR” Track
Mode. Position the sector directly off the port or starboard side of
the vessel. The bottom ring should no longer move in and out or the
movement should be reduced significantly.
