Installation Requirements
Approvals
Sea-Chest installations must be approved on a case-by-case basis with regard to the vessel’s national
registry and corresponding maritime authority. The ship owner and shipyard performing the installation
are responsible for obtaining installation approval.

Power supply
We strongly recommend the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). The UPS should have the
ability to maintain power for 10 minutes, this allows shut off and retraction of the equipment in the case
of a power failure.

Dry Dock
Ensure proper clearance under Sea-Chest for sonar installation. Avoid placing supporting blocks in the
area of the Sea-Chest. In the Note section of this manual log the position of the Sea-Chest for future
reference.

Wiring
All cables must be supported or protected along its entire length. Conduit or cable trays should be used.
Cables must be installed so as not to run in the areas of high-power supplies, antenna cables or other
sources of interference.

Vibration
Vibration on any of the equipments must be monitored. Excessive vibration must have dampeners
installed.

Temperature and Humidity

All equipments, unless otherwise specified, must be protected from extremes in temperature and
humidity.

Sea-Chest Installation and Inspection

The MAQ was designed to fit into existing competitors Sea-Chest with little or no modifications.

T
he MAQ Sonar electronics is capable of driving three different frequency
transducers. This is a generalized manual for all three types of
transducers.

Approvals
Sea-Chest installations must be approved on a case-by-case basis with regard to
the vessel’s national registry and corresponding maritime authority. The ship
owner and shipyard performing the installation are responsible for obtaining
installation approval.

Sea-Chest Location
The Sea-Chest must be located approximately 1/3 of the vessels length from the
bow. It must be located on the centerline or next to the keel. The Sea-Chest must
be faired if the Sea-Chest is off to the side of the keel. Ensure the face of the
transducer is unobstructed for transmission and reception. The Sea-Chest must be
mounted Vertical to the Normal Trim Water Line or Perpendicular to the water
line during normal operation. Do not install Sea-Chest in an area where inlet or
outlet pipes may cause turbulence or exhaust air or fluids that may effect the
operation of the sonar.

Grounding and Zinc Anodes

MAQ Sonar’s Transducer Pipe, Transceiver and Interface Unit must be electrically
connected to the ships main ground. Zinc Anodes must be installed on transducer
pipes and inspected and replaced yearly. Poor grounding will cause excessive zinc
erosion.

24
The following Changes may require a computer technician:

Computer BIOS Changes:

The following will need to be made to the computer BIOS to ensure proper operation of the MAQ
Sonar system. While each computer set-up differs slightly, this is a generalized description of
computer BIOS settings. Should there be any difficulties contact the factory.

MAIN or BASIC Computer Settings:

It may or may not need to detect the PRIMARY MASTER hard drive or set the system to AUTO-
detect the hard disk.
Set the system to “HALT ON ALL ERRORS BUT KEYBOARD”.

INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS:
In the I/O SETTINGS or INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS panel, set the PRINTER PORT to EPP
(Extended Parallel Port).

BOOT-UP:
Set the system to boot first from the FLOPPY drive and second to the hard disk.

5) The computer must start up and show the following:

A) The “Data Acquisition Controller” in the computer start-up BIOS page;
B) Starting MS-Dos;
C) The MAQ LOGO initialization page;
D) The Sonar Display page;
E) If “No Data Received” is flashing on the screen Ref. pg 33 or consult the factory.
6) Standard PC’s will need the ATX Power Interface installed (See Personal Computer ATX
Power Interface procedure on pg 25)

The Computer is now ready to operate the MAQ Sonar equipment.

25
Computer On:
Computers equipped with ATX style power supplies require a momentary contact switch to turn
the computer ON/OFF (Momentary switch located in the front of the case). Through the
Computer On terminals the sonar is able to control the power status of the computer. See
installation instructions below.

Personal Computer ATX Power Interface:

Refer to the computer system main board manual to determine if the computer has an ATX power
supply. Please note many industrial microprocessor systems do not use this type of supply
therefore this modification will not be required. Provided with the sonar is a kit allowing the MAQ
Sonar system to control the ON/OFF sequence of desktop and tower PCs, which are equipped
with an ATX style power supply.

34
Frequency Setting: (IN PORT)
A) Set the sonar to "Omni Mode (OD)" under "Mode Control (MC)" (ref. Operators Manual
Ch 2);
B) Adjust the Range (RG), Gain (GN), Near Gain (NG) and Far Gain (FG) controls for a
stable target on the display at the longest distance from the boat;
C) On the "System Panel (SYS)" (ref. Operators Manual Ch 10), select the "Frequency
Control (FQ)";
D) Vary the Frequency Control until the picture on the screen is at maximum display strength.
(It may be necessary to repeat STEP B)
E) DO NOT try to adjust the frequency while the vessel is moving.

Display Alignment (DA) on System Panel (SYS):

The Display is not aligned when the front mark of the transducer faces the bow of the boat.
There are two ways to adjust the Display Alignment.
To Align:
1. Adjust the Display Alignment (DA) on the System Panel (SYS) to align the dock or
wharf with the boat. Adjusting the dock to the display will give a relatively good
alignment.
2. To get a better alignment adjust the Display Alignment (DA) on the System Panel
(SYS) by using the propeller noise of the boat as a reference while leaving port.

GPS Connection:
For best sonar performance the G.P.S. input inside the Computer Interface Unit must be
connected to the boats G.P.S. Check the Amber LED labeled G.P.S. IN found inside
Computer Interface Unit on the 1872 Host board is flashing. (See NMEA and
G.P.S. Wiring Hookup on pg 35)

35
NMEA and G.P.S. Wiring Hook-up
(Computer On)
Diagram 10.1

The RS-232 In allows other equipment to send data strings to the MAQ Sonar.

The RS-232 Out allows the MAQ Sonar to send data strings to other equipment.

The G.P.S. Input requires a NMEA 0183 data sentence from a G.P.S., which contains RMC.
This is the preferred sentence to provide latitude and longitude readout on the display. If RMC is
not available VTG & TDS will provide wake trail but not latitude and longitude display.

COMPUTER ON:
These terminals are used to turn on PC’s with ATX power supplies.
Computers with ATX power supplies use a momentary switch to the power ON/OFF. A pulse is
required to turn the power ON/OFF. These terminals must be directly connected to the computers
motherboard ON/OFF connection. See Personal Computer ATX Power Interface on page 25.

36
Synchronization Wiring Diagram
Diagram 10.2

The Sync. Output Active is used to synchronize or key other equipment. A pulse is generated at
the beginning of each transmit cycle as shown above. On the Set-up Panel “STP” of the MAQ
Sonar display the setting “TX” Transmit must be set to “ON”. “ON” is the standard operating
position. (Transformer Isolated)

The Sync. Output Passive works the same as the Sync. Output Active but uses an active TTL
grounding pulse to trigger or key external equipments. (Optically Isolated)

The Sync. Input is used to synchronize or key the MAQ Sonar from other equipment. (Optically
Isolated)

37
Inclinometer Alignment
Installation:
1. The Inclinometer can be found inside the Computer Interface
Unit.
2. A sticker on the side of the Inclinometer indicates the side that
must face the stern.
3. Loosen the thumbscrew on the Inclinometer-mounting arm.
4. Position the inclinometer with the stern side facing the proper
direction and level the bubble indicator on the top of the
Inclinometer. (As shown)
5. Tighten the thumbscrew firmly to fix the position of the Inclinometer.
6. Inclinometer must be aligned for transmitter beam stabilization in the direction of the cursor.
Stabilization is only available in Track and Search Modes Ref. Mode Control (MC) Operators
Manual (CH 2).

Electronic Calibration:
On the “STP” Set-up Panel of the sonar there is a selection for the
type of Inclinometer being used. Read the letter indicated on the top
of the Inclinometer and
set the “INC” Inclinometer Type to the appropriate letter Ref.
Operators Manual (CH 3).
On the “OPR” Panel under the “MC” Mode Control Selection set the
sonar to either “TR” Track Mode or “SR” Search Mode to adjust the
Inclinometer.
There is a software adjustment.
On the “SYS” System Panel 2 readouts will appear port & bow. (Shown in blue rectangle) These
two readouts will indicate how close to level the Inclinometer that has been installed. “BW” Bow
Adjust and “PT” Port Adjust must be adjusted to zero the port and bow readouts Ref. Operators
Manual (CH 10).

Test:
After adjusting the level and direction of the Inclinometer the
stabilizer can be tested by tilting down to an angle that displays a
bottom ring in “OD” Omni Directional Mode. As the vessel rolls this
ring moves in and out. Set the “MC” Mode Control to “TR” Track
Mode. Position the sector directly off the port or starboard side of
the vessel. The bottom ring should no longer move in and out or the
movement should be reduced significantly.
