DATA : v2 = u2 + 2 a s s = u t + ½ a t2

Question 1
1.1 The diagram shows a velocity-time graph for a car

What is the distance travelled between time t = 0 and t= 4 s?

A. 28 m B. 24 m C. 3.0 m D. 2.5 m

Question 2
A vehicle travelling north at 16 m.s-1 suddenly brakes when the driver sees a pothole
in the road ahead. He slows down to 4 m.s-1 over a time of 3 s.
He maintains this speed for 4s until past the pothole and then he accelerates
forward at 5 m.s-2 for 5 s.

2.1 Draw the velocity/time graph to represent the motion of the vehicle from the
time that the driver sees the pothole [3]

2.2 Calculate the velocity reached by the vehicle after his 5 m.s-2 acceleration [2]

2.3 Calculate the total displacement of the vehicle over the 12 s period [3]

Question 3
A stone is thrown with a horizontal velocity of 20ms-1 from the top of a cliff 15m high.
The path of the stone is shown below.

Air resistance is negligible.

For this stone :
3.1 Calculate the time taken to fall 15 m [2]

3.2 Calculate the magnitude of the resultant velocity after falling 15 m [4]

Question 4
A ball is released from rest and falls vertically. The ball hits the ground and rebounds
vertically.

The variation with time of the velocity of the ball is shown on the following graph :
(note : down is treated as POSITIVE)

Air resistance can be ignored.

4.1 With what speed does the ball strike the ground the first time? [2]

4.2 How long after being dropped does the ball reach the top of its bounce? [2]

4.3 Determine the acceleration of the ball after it is dropped. Show all working
[3]
4.4 Determine, for the ball, from t=0 s to t= 2.1 s : the distance moved. [3]

Question 5
A ball is kicked from horizontal ground towards the top of a vertical wall, as
represented in the diagram below (not to scale)

The horizontal distance between the initial position of the ball and the base of the
wall is 24 m.
The ball is kicked with an initial velocity v at an angle of 28° to the horizontal. The
ball hits the top of the wall after a time of 1.5 s.
Air resistance may be assumed to be negligible.
5.1 Calculate the initial horizontal component of the velocity of the ball. [2]
5.2 Show that the initial vertical component of the velocity of the ball is 8.5 m s -1.
[2]
5.3 Calculate the time taken for the ball to reach its maximum height above the
ground [2]

Question 3
3.1 vert motion : s = u t + ½ a t2
15 = ½ (9.81) t2
t2 = 3.06
t = 1.75 s [2]

3.2 vert motion : v2 = u2 + 2 a s

v2 = 2 (9.81) 15
v = 17.16 m.s-1
Using Pythagoras : 20m/s

R 17.16 m/s

R2 = 202 + 17.162
R = 26.4 m/s (magnitude only) [4]

Question 4
4.1 v = 0.8 m/s [2]
4.2 t = 2.1 s [2]
4.3 a = gradient = (10.8 – 0) / (1.1 – 0)
= 9.82 m/s2 [3]
4.4 s = area = ½ (1.15) 10.8 + ½ (2.1 - 1.15) 8.8
= 6.21 + 4.18
= 10.4 m [3]

Question 5
5.1 horiz compt : ( vH = v cos 28)
s = 24 m
t = 1.5 s vH = s / t = 24 / 1.5 = 16 m/s [2]
5.2 horiz : 16 (COE) = v cos 28
v = 18.12 m/s
vert compt : vv = v sin 28 = 18.12 sin 28 = 8.5 m/s [2]
5.3 vert : v= u + a t
0 = 8.5 + (-9.81) t
t = 0.87 s [2]
