Purposes of the Test

Use the TOEFL ITP tests for:

TOEFL ITP Test Content

Listening Comprehension
In the Listening Comprehension section of the test, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your
ability to understand spoken English. There are 3 parts to this section with special directions for each
part. Answer all the questions on the basis of what is stated or implied by the speakers in this test.

In Part A, you will hear short conversations between 2 people. After each
conversation, you will hear a question about the conversation.

In Part B, you will hear longer conversations. After each conversation, you will
hear several questions.

In Part C of the test, you will hear several talks. After each talk, you will hear
some questions.

Structure and Written Expression

There are two types of questions in the Structure and Written Expression section of the
TOEFL test:

1. Structure (questions 1-15) consists of fifteen sentences in which part of the sentence has been replaced
with a blank. Each sentence is followed by four answer choices. You must choose the answer that
completes the sentence in a grammatically correct way.

Structure and Written Expression

There are two types of questions in the Structure and Written Expression section of the
TOEFL test:

2. Written Expression (questions 16-40) consists of twenty-five sentences in which four words or groups
of words have been underlined. You must choose the underlined word or group of words that is not correct.

Reading Comprehension
This section of the TOEFL ITP Level 1 test is designed to measure the ability to read and
understand short passages similar in topic and style to those read in courses taught at North
American universities and colleges.

You will read a variety of short passages on academic subjects. Each

passage is followed by a number of questions about the material.

To avoid giving an advantage to individuals in any one field of study,

sufficient context is provided so that no subject-specific familiarity with
the topic is required to answer the questions.

Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension

This section of the TOEFL ITP Level 2 test is designed to test your knowledge of words or
phrases that are commonly used in academic or nonacademic contexts. Each Vocabulary item
consists of a sentence (which may or may not be drawn from a published source) with 1 word or
phrase highlighted.

Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension

This section of the TOEFL ITP Level 2 test is designed to measure the ability to read and
understand the type of short passages that high school students studying English as a Foreign
Language are likely to encounter. You will read a variety of short passages on academic subjects.
Each passage is followed by a number of questions about the material.

In this section you will read several passages. Each 1 is followed by several
questions. You are to choose the 1 best answer, A, B, C or D, to each question.

Answer all questions about the information in a passage on the basis of what
is stated or implied in that passage.

TOEFL ITP Test Content

Speaking
The TOEFL ITP Speaking test1 evaluates the skills needed to speak English in everyday situations, as
well as some basic campus and academic settings — making it an ideal way for in-country institutions to
measure a students’ capabilities. The Speaking test is only available with the digital TOEFL ITP Level 1 or
Level 2 test.

It consists of:
✔ one read aloud task (read a passage aloud)
✔ two independent speaking tasks (familiar topics)
✔ one integrated speaking task (listen to a conversation and answer a question about it.

Results of the CEFR mapping provide the minimum TOEFL ITP section scores for four of the levels
defined in the CEFR (A2, B1, B2 and C1).

FAQ Answers

The TOEFL test fee varies depending on the location and test
format chosen by the test-taker. In the United States, TOEFL ITP
Plus test costs $120.

TOEFL ITP score reports are valid for 2 years. Because language
proficiency can change considerably in a relatively short period of
time, scores more than 2 years old cannot be reported or verified.

Scores are available approximately 3 – 7 days after receipt of the

answer sheets.

Each institution that requires TOEFL ITP scores determines for itself
what scores, or ranges of scores, are acceptable. These requirements
vary from institution to institution, depending on such factors as the
applicant’s field of study and the level of study. There is no specific
passing or failing score set by ETS for the tests.
