REFEREES HAND SIGNALS IN VOLLEYBALL

1. Authorization to serve - 1st referee only

2. Team to serve- 1st and 2nd referee

3. Change of courts- 1st referee only

4. Time out- 2nd referee only- your palm/fingers must be pointing to the team who asked for time out.

5. Substitution
6. A. Misconduct warning- 1st referee only - show the yellow card and point player/coach who committed the
misconduct.

B. misconduct penalty- 1st referee only – show the red card and point the player/coach who committed the
misconduct.

7. Expulsion- 1st referee only – show the yellow and red card and point the player/coach who is expelled.

8. Disqualification- 1st referee only – show separate the yellow and red card for the disqualified player/coach.

9. End of set (or match)- 1st and 2nd referee


10. Ball not tossed or released at the service (5-8 seconds to serve the ball) - 1st and 2nd referee – give the award to the
team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

11. Delay in service- 1st referee only – give the award to the team and show violation committed by the opposing team –
show your eight fingers.

12. Blocking fault or screening (If a player touches the net while attempting to block a shot, it is considered a blocking
fault) - 1st and 2nd referee – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

13. Positional or rotational fault- 1st and 2nd referee – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by
the opposing team.
14. Ball “in”- 1st referee only – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

15. Ball “out” – 1st and 2nd referee – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

16. Catch/carrying- 1st referee only – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

17. Double contact- 1st referee only – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.
18. Four hits- 1st referee only – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

19. Net touched by the player (served ball touches the net between the antennae and does not pass the vertical plane of
the net) - 1st and 2nd referee – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

20. Reaching beyond the net- 1st referee only – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the
opposing team.

21. Attack hit fault- 1st and 2nd referee – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing
team.
22. Penetration into the opponent’s court (ball crossing the lower space or the server touches the court (end line) or the
player steps outside his/her court at the moment of the service) - 1st and 2nd referee – give the award to the team and
show the violation committed by the opposing team.

23. Double fault and replay- 1st referee only – double fault/replay means, no score to be awarded but repeat the service
by the previous server.

24. Ball touched- 1st referee only – give the award to the team and show the violation committed by the opposing team.

25. A. Delay warning- 1st referee only – f a team performs an improper action that defers resumption of the game, the
referee covers their wrist with a yellow card.
B. Delay penalty- 1st referee only – If a team performs an improper action that defers resumption of the game twice
or more in one match, the referee covers their wrist with a red card and a point and service are given to the opponent.
LINE JUDGES’ FLAG SIGNALS
1. Ball “IN” – point down with flag.

2. Ball “OUT” – raise flag vertically

3. Ball touched – raise flag and touch the top with the palm of the free hand

4. Crossing space faults, ball touched an outside object, or foot fault by any player during service – wave
flag over the head and point to the antenna or the respective line.

5. Judgement impossible – raise and cross both arms and hands in front of the chest.
