As such, a focus of future research should be to develop a better and more comprehensive
understanding the nature of these interactions (and implications of thereof) within the context of CO
2 utilisation. The total direct emissions of the plant itself were usually reported in each study
surveyed in terms of global warming potential in units of CO 2 equivalents (CO 2 e). However, the
literature survey results showed that, on average, this is actually worse. Specifically, do they reflect
supporting evidence, include an assessment of likelihood, and communicate effectively. As such,
they are less mature than oxyfuels, but it is still within the realm of technical possibility to design
large-scale processes which use existing materials and designs. We would also like to thank
CO2Chem and CO 2 Plus for bringing the authors together to write this article. There are two
primary motivations for DOTs to consider implementation of a carbon. The future role of BECCS is
a subject that divides researchers as estimates of potential future biomass supply vary widely due to
differences in approaches used to consider factors such as population development, consumption
patterns (e.g., diet), economic and technological development, climate change, and societal priorities
concerning conservation versus production objectives. One example is the IH2 process, which
utilizes integrated hydropyrolysis and hydroconversion. Genes regulating protein transcription were
identified by comparing human genes and the Arabidopsis plant, which, when deleted from
Arabidopsis, resulted in mutants with higher biomass. Smyth noted that reduction in greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions is sensitive to assumptions for future energy emissions, particularly for the
electricity grid, bioenergy conversion efficiency, and remote community fuel mixes. In addition to
rising per capita energy demands, he emphasized the importance of understanding which
technologies can be adopted now and in the future to move toward carbon negative energy, focusing
primarily on technologies that convert biomass to biofuels and biochar. This mix is then treated in a
catalytic converter with steam, which then produces more hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Traditional
BECCS supply chains consist of some form of biomass being sent to an energy conversion facility,
along with carbon capture and transportation to an underground storage facility. Next Article in

the NEP scenario, which foresees a significant share of the energy mix coming from renewables. The
CCU concept fits very well into this master plan because the plan regulates some important visions
to develop green industries, including the use of eco-products, renewables, and low hazard
substances ( Presiden Republik Indonesia, 2015 ). Quest, an oilsands project run by Shell Canada
that started capturing carbon in 2015. Click here to buy this book in print or download it as a free
PDF, if available. In some studies, the assumed fuel prices were far from both known historical
market prices for their respective markets, and far from the assumptions made by other researchers
(see the Section 3.2 discussion on outliers), and thus were not necessarily good values to include in
the meta-analysis. This may be an outlier among the calcium looping studies. They are highly
efficient, but are not equipped to achieve negative carbon emissions. The addition of carbon capture
makes the hydrogen production process nearly emissions free, when clean electricity is used to
power the carbon capture facility. The carbon dioxide stream from this natural gas processing facility
is compressed and transported for use in the Permian Basin. There are some aspects of our modern
lives that generate lots of emissions with no viable low-carbon alternatives. Four are located in
Canada: Boundary Dam, a coal-fired power plant operated by SaskPower that started capturing
carbon in 2014. There are evident questions as to the long-term consequences that any difference in
the purported versus perceived rationale for CO 2 utilisation might have for future public investment
in the sector. Lastly, it is important to note that although CCA is a useful metric for understanding
the cost trade-offs in terms of a reduction in the global warming potential, it does not consider any
other environmental effects such as acid rain, eutrophication, smog, ozone depletion, etc., and so it is
not a substitute for a holistic picture of environmental impact. Sequestration in geologic formations is
the subject of a subsequent workshop and was not discussed in detail. A spent sorbent purge stream
is removed from the calcination reactor, in part because of the build-up of calcium sulfate and other
solids that result from reactions with impurities in coal or other fuels.
A condenser is used to produce liquid water from the turbine exhaust, and then a pump is used to
recompress the water to supercritical pressures. Dark solid squares indicate points at which a design
will typically use either Route 1 or Route 2, but not both. However, the assumptions and calculations
made concerning the capital costs of the plants themselves play a larger role. Multiple requests from
the same IP address are counted as one view. Smyth noted that reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions is sensitive to assumptions for future energy emissions, particularly for the electricity grid,
bioenergy conversion efficiency, and remote community fuel mixes. Ellipses are drawn as a visual
aid only and do not specifically identify outliers. While investors are already significant actors in
this arena, the first studies into their role and behaviour are ongoing and so only speculative
conclusions can be drawn as to the processes driving their decisions to invest. Observations from the
three power plants and the Western Research Institute are positive regarding the combustion of
torrified biomass, said Lei. Links to the ISO image and instructions for burning a CD-ROM from an
ISO image are provided below. One of the four pillars which will contribute towards achieving these
goals is through blending of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) into the Natural Gas grid. Looking at
the big picture, the meta-study results suggest that it may not be prudent to invest large amounts of
money into improving solvent-based and membrane-based CO 2 capture technologies at the micro-
level. IRA extended the “commence construction” window for 45Q through the end of 2032. He
noted that there appears to be a divergence among different types of stakeholders in accepting
BECCS and a general lack of investment support as a whole for the technologies. Moreover, BECCS
affects the cost-effective global emissions trajectory for climate management by accommodating
prolonged near-term use of fossil fuels, despite land use change and land management emissions. In
the following section, we use diffusion theory as a lens to explore the factors that might affect the
market acceptance of CO 2 utilisation technologies among consumers, investors, and intra-firm
actors. Another important consideration for policy decisions is spatial allocation: how are facilities,
infrastructure, and harvests allocated across the landscape. This paper considers the CCU concept
only in conjunction with the conversion. However, because of the lack of techno-economic analysis
data available in the literature, cryogenic distillation is not included in the meta-study. The Feasibility
Toolkit is a spreadsheet workbook that is pre-populated with rates and norms. He said that the
monitoring and evaluation of GHG emissions of bioenergy is a primary consideration due to
feedstock choice and geographic targeting implications. She highlighted recent research exploring
the deployment of BECCS at scales assumed in integrated assessment models’ negative emissions
scenarios. We would also like to thank CO2Chem and CO 2 Plus for bringing the authors together to
write this article. The fuel is oxidized into CO 2 and H 2 O, still at high pressure, by reducing the
metal oxides. SaskPower completed the first commercial-scale retrofit of an existing coal-fired
power plant with carbon capture technology, selling carbon dioxide locally for EOR in
Saskatchewan. Feature papers are submitted upon individual invitation or recommendation by the
scientific editors and must receive. The calcium looping studies have very low computed CCAs in
Figure 14 (on par with the IGFC systems), with some even being negative compared to SCPC
without CO 2 capture. CCUS, specifically Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS),
can generate power whatever the weather while providing negative emissions at the same time. The
steam and carbon dioxide are separated by cooling and compressing the gas stream, and once
separated, the CO? is removed. Brown identified a number of advantages to gasification: it accepts
diverse biomass feedstocks, produces a uniform intermediate product, and is commercially proven.
Also, the introduction of CCS technologies in some countries (e.g., Germany) has been stymied by a
strong resistance to the concept among stakeholders and the general public ( Brunsting et al., 2011;
L’Orange Seigo et al., 2014 ). The following section outlines some of the key factors and actors at
the socio-political level that are likely to shape the development and deployment of CO 2 utilisation
technologies.
It is an open question as to whether 90% is the optimal amount, since there are diminishing returns
on increasing this number (the cost and energy penalties per CO 2 captured increases as the capture
rate increases). Available online: (accessed on 1 August 2017). IHS. The IHS North American Power
Capital Costs Index. As shown in Figure 5, cryogenic air separation is used to separate O 2 from air,
and use the recovered O 2 as the oxidant for combustion instead of air. This is not intended to be an
exhaustive list of research questions but rather an outline of a handful of important avenues for
initial inquiry, which are based upon the themes identified within this review article. The loaded
solvent is then purified in a stripper, which recovers lean solvent in the bottom and the CO 2 in the
distillate for compression and transport. TRB makes no representation or warrant of any kind,

consequential or special damages. BECCS could provide a significant portion of the global energy
supply if deployed to its theoretical maximum feasible amount. However, more information on
emissions through larger and longer combustion tests is needed. It is also possible to use enzymes or
microorganisms to convert biomass for carbon removal, but these approaches were not discussed at
this workshop. Note that the pressure of the recovered CO 2 gas from the flash drums is moderately
high, such that the costs of CO 2 compression are much lower than for SCPC and NGCC post-
combustion approaches that capture the CO 2 at flue gas pressures (near atmospheric). Carbon
dioxide from a gas processing plant owned by DTE Energy is captured at a rate of approximately
1,000 tons per day and injected into a nearby oil field operated by Core Energy in the Northern Reef
Trend of the Michigan Basin. Moreover, the deployment of CCS and BECCS, at any significant
scale, includes demonstrable logistical challenges that would require significant policy signals to
overcome. A vacuum is drawn on the permeate side to recover CO 2 at low pressure, and so this gas
must be recompressed back up to high pressure again. Our ellipse drawn for the general oxyfuels
region does not include the outliers COXY-9 (with very low LCOE) and COXY-12 and COXY-13
(with very high LCOE), for reasons explained in the previous subsection. He said that the monitoring
and evaluation of GHG emissions of bioenergy is a primary consideration due to feedstock choice
and geographic targeting implications. This resource hasn't been reviewed yet To ensure quality for

ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Anadarko Petroleum carbon dioxide pipeline systems to oil fields in
Wyoming and Colorado and is the largest commercial carbon capture facility in the world at 7
million tons of capacity annually. However, because these studies are simulation based, other
greenhouse gases such as NO x are either ignored or are present in very small quantities, such that
the total direct emissions of CO 2 (the chemical) is essentially equal to the total global warming
potential in terms of CO 2 e. A number of biomass sources and potential feedstocks were addressed
during the webinar and at the workshop, including woody biomass, corn grain, agricultural residues,
waste biomass, and energy crops (e.g., switchgrass and miscanthus). A typical natural gas combined
cycle (NGCC) process with post-combustion carbon capture for an example system using
monoethanolamine (MEA) as a solvent. In addition, for the first time, estimates of the potential
biomass supply from microalgae were included and were projected at 80 million tons. While it does a
good job giving a high-level overview, it could be improved by the harmonization of the data in the
text with the figures and other chapters in the draft report as well as by adding new conceptual
figure(s) and a table. According to the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia (2010),
after the world recession of 2008, Indonesia experienced no economic instability. Models trade off
land carbon and increased nitrous oxide emissions for long run climate benefits. Brown identified a
number of advantages to gasification: it accepts diverse biomass feedstocks, produces a uniform
intermediate product, and is commercially proven. Scatter plot of the calculated LCOE at standard
conditions of each plant vs. For example, one could reflect on how the opinions registered by local
stakeholders at the community level (e.g., local authorities, affected publics) might serve to affect
more general socio-political level acceptance (e.g., national government) decision making (or vice
versa). Some examples include the Uthmaniyah CO 2 -enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project in Saudi
Arabia and the Boundary Dam Power Plant CCS Project in Canada. Construct your own geological
map and incorporate other mineral and petroleum exploration datasets including mines and mineral
deposits, petroleum wells, active leases, and much more. Moreover, energy crops could be grown
using landscape design to reduce soil erosion, improve water quality, and complement current
agricultural practices.
