4. Known defects and deficiencies

Severity Description

Critical error Error that can cause loss of data. No workaround exist

Major error Error that can cause loss of data. Workaround exist

Minor error Inconveniences/errors that cannot cause loss of data

4.1 Known critical errors

There are no known critical errors in PMI 1410 - v1.42.0.11.
4.2 Known major errors
There are four known major error in PMI 1410 - v1.42.0.11:

#936 A measurement will become invalid if the diagrams

in the measurement are acquired with different PMI
calibration boxes or different handheld sensors

Description In the wizards "Manual Measurement", "Online Sensor

Calibration" and "TDC Calibration" all diagrams must be
acquired using the same PMI calibration box and the same
reference sensor.
If different PMI calibration boxes or different reference
sensors are used during the same measurement, the
measurement will be considered invalid and must be
cancelled.
This can be costly if e.g. a 0-diagram must be re-measured.

Workaround Use the same PMI calibration box and the same reference
sensor to acquire all diagrams in a measurement.
Do NOT change the PMI calibration box or the reference
sensor DURING a measurement

#1148 "Print" or "Backup Done" dialog hidden behind

PMI window

Description When using the "Report" function in the measurement

archive or the "Backup" function in Maintenance view, a
modal dialog might end up hidden behind the main PMI
windows.
As only the main PMI windows is visible, the user assumes
that PMI is irresponsive.

Workaround Click the PMI icon in the task bar one or more times. This will
force the PMI windows to be repainted and the modal dialog
will appear in front of the main PMI window.

#1092 Failed database restore leaves PMI unable to start

Description If the PMI.exe process terminates unexpectedly during a

database restore, a corrupted copy of the database might be
created.
PMI will not be able to start using the corrupted database.
PMI will not be able to restore a backup as a ".rollback" file
exists from the failed restore operation.

Workaround Manually delete the corrupted database file, then PMI will roll
back to the previous database.
1) Close PMI (if running)
1) Type +R to start the Windows Run dialog
2) Type the path to the program folder:
a) On Windows XP:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\MAN\PMI\
b) On Windows Vista or later:
%PUBLIC%\MAN\PMI\
3) Click OK
4) Windows File explorer will start, find and delete the file
"pmi-database.dat"
5) Restart PMI

Note The file "pmi-database.dat" contains all configuration-,

calibration- and measurement data. Deleting this file will
delete all the data.
Only in this very unlikely error situation should the "pmi-
database.dat" filer ever be deleted manually.
If you need to move PMI data, please use the build-in Backup
& Restore functionality in PMI

#1223 Windows shutdown/log off handled wrongly by PMI

Description If a shutdown/restart of Windows XP is initiated the following

can happen:
 PMI locks and prevents Windows from shutting down.
This can cause loss of data if a manual measurement
or calibration is in progress
 PMI terminates even if the shutdown is cancelled

Workaround Do not initiate a windows shutdown while a wizard is running

in PMI
Restart PMI after a cancelled shutdown

Note Windows XP only

#491 PC speaker beeps during "print report"
#783 Errors in printouts and reports generated using the built-in "Export to PDF"
functionality
#1079 DPI scaling in Windows must use the default value (100%), larger will
make PMI unreadable
Workaround - do not use Windows XP style scaling:
 On Windows Vista:
Control Panel\Personalization\Adjust font size (DPI)
DPI Scaling\Custom DPI...
Use Windows XP style scaling: Unchecked
 On Windows 7:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\
Set custom text size (DPI)...
Use Windows XP style scaling: Unchecked
 On Windows 8:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Custom sizing
options...
Use Windows XP style scaling: Unchecked
#1088 If not connected to a PMI-DAU, it takes 10-15 seconds for PMI to switch
away from the "Trace" view
#1121 “Engine number” must be shorter than 127 characters.
#1225 When running out of disk space, PMI will show silly error messages. New

Release notes for v1.42.0.11 release 13 (15)

5.11 PMI 1101 – 1.21.0.7

Synopsis
PMI-DAU firmware version 2.6
The PMI-DAU firmware 2.5 contained a critical error. The error could cause
the PMI-DAU to get an unknown subnet mask in its IP configuration.
Depending on the network configuration this error could prevent data from
PMI-DAU in reaching PMI.exe
Printing of measurements
CoCoS-EDS interface now supports pressure curves
Backup / Restore of the database
TDC algorithm fixed for small-bore engines
PMI-DAU firmware 2.5
Install script generator
Problems with the network connection between DAU and PC may occur with
firmware versions 2.3 through 2.5 because of the error addressed with firmware
version 2.6. (Please note that apparently PMI-DAU firmware version 2.5 seems to
work in spite of the error, whilst Bootloader firmware of the same version will fail.)
In case of network problems with firmware versions 2.3 through 2.5, please try the
following procedure to establish network connection between PC and DAU:
1. Connect the DAU directly to an Ethernet port of the PC
2. Configure the TCP/IP protocol of the particular Ethernet port with a static IP
address, e.g. 172.17.17.10.
3. Connect the RS232 service channel to a serial port of the PC to gain access
to the serial service channel.
4. Configure TCP/IP on the DAU using the service channel 'ip' command with
the PC as gateway, e.g. 'ip 172.17.17.30 255.255.255.0 172.17.17.10'.
Restart the DAU
Start PMI Auto-tuning 1101 – 1.21.0.7, this will update the PMI DAU with firmware
version 2.6.
5.12 PMI 1.19.0.9
PMI 1.19.0.9 is the first commercial release of PMI based on the PMI-DAU
hardware and a new software platform.
The most important features are
 Use of the PMI-DAU hardware unit
 Traceability between all measurements and system configuration

6. Database compatibility
PMI 1410 - 1.42.0.11 is NOT compatible with databases from the 1st generation
PMI, see section 6.1
For the new PMI generation, PMI 1410 - 1.42.0.11 can read and upgrade databases
from all previous versions. The upgraded databases can only be read by PMI 1410 -
1.42.0.11 or newer.
NOTE: After updating databases from version 1205-1.36.0.9 or earlier it may be
required to perform a new TDC calibration. If this is required, PMI will start showing
the "maintenance" screen, with a remark under "Perform TDC Calibration" to
"Please Run Wizard".
6.1 Previous PMI generation
It is NOT possible to upgrade databases from the previous PMI generation. PMI
1101 (and later) provides traceability for all measurements to the underlying
configuration and calibration of the system. This type of information is NOT available
in previous PMI generation and therefore upgrading of old databases is NOT
possible.

7. Installation and deployment instructions
Please install PMI 1312 - v1.40.0.15 using the supplied installation tool, "SetupPMI
1312 v1.40.0.15.exe". The set-up tool will install the PMI software, documentation
and guides as well as the PMI configuration editor tool.
The database containing the configuration of PMI must be distributed and installed
separately.
Note that the actual location of the software and of the PMI database depends on
the version of the Windows operating system.
