Question and Answers + Fill in the blanks:-

1. What is friction?

Ans. Friction is a force between two surfaces that are sliding across each
other. It is an opposing force.
For example a person tries to drag(pull along a surface) a heavy
bag
along the floor, friction makes this difficult to pull.

2. Friction can slow down things and stop stationary things from
moving.

3. What are the factors that affect friction?

Ans.
● Friction is more between rough surfaces.
● Friction is less between smooth surfaces.
● More weight of the object causes more friction.

4. What are some of the ways to reduce friction?

Ans.
● Polishing the surface- Polishing a surface makes the surface
smooth and reduces the friction.

● Lubricating the surface- By applying lubricants(oil or grease) on

surfaces, friction can be reduced between them.

● Streamlined Shape- A streamlined shape is the shape which is

pointed on both or one end. The streamline shape helps in reducing
friction. E.g. of streamlined shapes are the shapes of fish, bird,
aeroplane, boat and rockets.

● Powdering - Powdering on any surface reduces friction between

that surface and another.
5. What is lubricant?
Ans. Lubricant is a substance that forms a thin layer between the two
surfaces in contact.

6.What are few ways to increase friction?

Ans.
● Shoes fixed with spikes.
● Handles of cricket bats, badminton rackets, and bicycles are
covered with rubber grips.

7. The study of the science of friction is called Tribology.
