The idea of an international women’s day arose at the end of the 19th century, in
the mindst of the Industrial Revolution and during the rise of the labor movement.
The celebration includes a struggle already undertaken in Ancient Greece and
reflected by Aristophanes in his work lysistrata, which tells how lysistrata began a
sexual strike against men to end the war, and wich was reflected in the French,
revolution: Parisian women, who called for freedom, equality and fraternity,
marched to Versailles to demand women’s suffrage, but it was not until the first
years of the twentieth century when it began to proclaim, from different
international organizations of the left, the celebration of a day of specific struggle
for women and their rights.
