Scene Breakdown: Christmas Carol

Scene # Pgs. Description of Scene

1 (I) 4 - 12 The Royal Exchange: setting the stage for the whole show with a bunch of
carolers and businessmen walking about, giving money to charity, getting
presents, and doing the holiday hubbub. Scrooge and Cratchit come along.
Scrooge is talking humbug Christmas and saying terrible things about the poor
and Mr. Smythe and his family.

2 (II) 5 - 24 The Streets of London: introduction to more London citizens and locations on
the London streets (the pantomime theatre, fish stalls, the market, etc.). Cratchit
finds his family and buys what food he can. Fred meets with Scrooge to invite
him to dinner. Scrooge is talking more about humbug Christmas. The citizens all
are appalled. Mr. Smythe brings his daughter, Grace, to talk to Scrooge, who is
still being very uncharitable. Scrooge makes it home when he sees Marley in his
home.

3 (III) 24 - 29 Scrooge’s Parlour - Night: Scrooge hears voices. The Ghost of Marley comes
along to introduce what is going to happen and mention how he is weighed down
by greed. He introduces other ghosts with similar problems too.

4 (IV) 30 - 31 Scrooge’s Bedroom - Night: Clock strikes 1 a.m. Ghost of Christmas Past
comes along and wooshes Scrooge to the past.

5 (V) 31 - 32 The Law Courts: Scrooge’s Father is arrested for not paying debts. He gives last
advice that changes Scrooge’s life. His Mother comforts Scrooge at 8.

6 (VI) 32 - 34 A Factory, Near A Giant Machine: Scrooge at 12 is working at a boot-making


machine. It is near Christmas and it is payday. Scrooge at 12 is writing a letter to
his sister Fan, who has been separated from him.

7 (VII) 35 - 43 Mr. Fezziwig’s Bank: Young Ebenezer is working at the bank along with Marley.
There is then a huge party, with food and dancing. Everyone is there. Young
Ebenezer proposes to Emily.

8 (VIII) 43 - 47 Scrooge and Marley, LTD: Young Ebenezer and Marley’s business is growing,
but his heart is beginning to harden. Emily breaks up with Scrooge. The Ghost of
Christmas Past wooshes Scrooge back to the present.

9 (IX) 48 - 52 A Starry Night: Clock strikes 2 a.m. The Ghost of Christmas Present appears
and has a large number of Dancing Girls. We then see Tiny Tim at the Cratchit
home.

10 (X) 52 - 60 The Streets of London: The Cratchit family celebrates Christmas. On the
streets, citizens celebrate Christmas, with Christmas crackers and drinking. Fred
Anderson and his family celebrate Christmas as well. Fred toasts Scrooge. So
does Cratchit. Ignorance and Want appear under the Ghost of Christmas
Presents coat to show human suffering. The Ghost of Christmas Present uses
Scrooge’s terrible words against him. Ghost of Christmas Future appears.

11 (XI) 60 - 66 St. Paul’s Graveyard: Monks and Gravediggers sing. Scrooge sees his
gravesite. No one cares. The Cratchit family surrounds Tiny Tim’s graveyard and
mourns. This truly changes Scrooge. A choir of Angelic Children. The Ghost of
Christmas Future entangles Scrooge in a white shroud.

12 (XII) 66 - 68 Scrooge’s Bedroom - Christmas Morning: Scrooge wakes up to Jonathon


knocking on his door. Scrooge is better, more excited, and has more Christmas
cheer. Scrooge gets Jonathon to buy a prized turkey.

13 (XIII) 68 - 74 The Streets of London: Scrooge continues to go through the town happily. He
gets the kids to go to the Pantomime Theatre. He passes out gifts. He goes to
the Cratchit’s house and, after teasing, gives the prized turkey to them. Scrooge
grabs Tiny Tim and takes him to Fred Anderson’s place. There is a big
celebration with all the citizens and children and reconnecting.
