Handling Tools
Objective
To inform customers of an expansion of the recommended use of BX elevators when handling tubulars.
Description
NOV has recently reviewed and updated the BX-3, -,4 and -5 Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analyses
(FMECA). Based on lessons learned, user input from the field, and progressive knowledge of the BX
elevator performance, it has been determined that the elevators can be used with doors facing down
when picking up or laying down tubulars from, or to a horizontal position (see Figure 1 and 2). This
contradicts an earlier recommendation as listed in the applicable user manuals.
Solution
In addition to the current recommendations in the user manual and based on the above information, extra
care should be taken related to:
• ensure the elevator closed and latched feedback signal is present prior to load transfer to the
elevator, and
• increase the inspection frequency of wear on the opening and closing/locking mechanism, and
• when lowering the elevator to pick up a tubular from the V-door traveling down, operators should
not overshoot, to prevent the tubular from bending and dislodging from its skate.
