for Senior High School student. Based on the preliminary observation at MBASH
Macario B. Asistio Sr. High School on 2023/2024 most of the students could
not speak English well because of several reasons. When the teacher asked the
students to speak or asked the students about understanding of the subjects study,

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), speaking skills are a crucial

part of effective communication and learning. These skills encompass the ability to
accurately use language, expand vocabulary, and improve comprehension. Task-based
learning has been shown to help students enhance their speaking skills.
Moreover, DepEd emphasizes the importance of communicative competence, which requires
an understanding of speech context, speech style, speech act, and communicative strategy.
They believe that effective use of communicative strategies is vital in various speech
situations.Mastering language and literacy, including speaking, is a process that requires
ongoing practice, dedication, and guidance. It's fundamental to academic success and
personal growth.

The reason why we conduct research about speaking skill is to understand how Gr. 11
students of M.B. Asistio Sr. High School communicate and express themselves through
spoken language. And also researchers can explore various aspects such as pronunciation,
fluency, vocabulary usage.
Conducting research about speaking skill can also helps developing effective teaching
methods and materials for language learners. It can help the educators to identify common
challenges and areas of improvement for learners, and design strategies to enhance their
speaking abilities.
In addition to understanding how Gr. 11 students of M.B. Asistio Sr. High School
communicate and express themselves through spoken language, conducting research on
speaking skills can provide valuable insights into other aspects as well. Research can delve
into the specific challenges faced by students in speaking English, such as the reasons behind
their reluctance to speak or their difficulty in expressing them selves. By identifying these
challenges, educators can develop targeted strategies and interventions to address them
effectively.
Furthermore, research on speaking skills can explore the impact of cultural and social factors
on students' speaking abilities. It can shed light on how cultural norms, social interactions,
and individual backgrounds influence students' confidence and proficiency in speaking
English. This understanding can help educators create a culturally inclusive and supportive
learning environment that encourages students to engage in English communication.
Conducting research on speaking skills also allows for the exploration of innovative teaching
methods and materials.
By investigating different approaches, such as task-based learning, project-based learning, or
technology-enhanced instruction, researchers can identify effective strategies for enhancing
students' speaking abilities. This research can inform the development of engaging and
interactive learning materials that cater to the specific needs and interests of Gr. 11 students.
Moreover, research on speaking skills can contribute to the ongoing professional
development of language teachers. By studying effective instructional practices and
techniques, researchers can provide valuable insights and guidance to educators, enabling
them to refine their teaching methods and better support their students' speaking
development.
Overall, conducting research on speaking skills not only helps us understand how students
communicate and express themselves, but it also informs the development of effective
teaching methods, addresses cultural and social factors, and supports the professional growth
of language educators. By continuously exploring and expanding our knowledge in this area,
we can create an environment that fosters students' confidence, proficiency, and enjoyment in
speaking English.
2.Background of the Study
Speaking is one of the four essential language skills that students need master.
It serves as a means of communication, allowing students to exchange information and ideas
with others. By speaking, students can express themselves, share their knowledge, and seek
help when facing challenges. It is also a way for students to express their opinions, solve
problems, improve their speaking proficiency, and build relationships. Therefore, speaking is

a crucial skill that students should develop.

However, in reality, many students struggle to speak in English, especially in senior

high school. A preliminary observation at MBASHS Macario B. Asistio Sr. High School
revealed that most students have difficulty speaking English well for various reasons. When
asked to speak or express their understanding of a subject, many students remain silent and
reluctant to speak. Consequently, they often receive low scores on tests. There are several
factors contributing to this issue. Firstly, students may find it challenging to convey their
thoughts because they are unsure of what to say. Secondly, teachers may not provide enough
opportunities for students to practice speaking and may lack motivation in teaching the
subject. Thirdly, students may feel shy and lack confidence due to mispronunciation and a
limited vocabulary, resulting in grammatical mistakes and pauses during speaking. This issue
is not solely the students' responsibility but also the teacher’s.
While teachers encourage students to speak, they may not provide sufficient guidance on
what to say in English. Different teaching strategies, such as the speech method and
grammar translation method, have been used, but they may not offer enough support or
opportunities for students to express their ideas. Consequently, students do not enjoy
speaking in English, particularly in front of the class. to address this issue, teachers need to
understand the classroom dynamics, students' characteristics, and their needs. By using
appropriate strategies, teachers can engage students and keep them motivated throughout the
learning process.

keep them motivated throughout the learning process. Teachers can still employ other
strategies to enhance students' speaking skills. For example, they can encourage open
discussions in the classroom where students are given the opportunity to express their
thoughts and opinions freely. Teachers can also incorporate group activities or pair work that
involve speaking and interaction among students. Additionally, providing prompts or topics
for discussion can help students organize their thoughts and engage in meaningful
conversations. It's important for teachers to create a supportive and inclusive environment
where students feel comfortable expressing themselves orally. By implementing these
strategies, teachers can foster a positive learning atmosphere and help students develop their
speaking abilities.Speaking skills have always played a crucial role in human communication
and learning throughout history. They involve the dynamic process of producing, receiving,
and processing information to construct meaning. Speaking allows individuals to express
their needs, connect with others, and articulate their ideas effectively. In the past, there was a
common belief that effective speaking was an innate talent that some people possessed while
others did not. However, this perception has evolved over time. Nowadays, it is widely
recognized that speaking skills can be developed and improved through practice and
education. Speaking skills hold particular significance in language learning. They enable
individuals to express their thoughts and maintain social relationships. With over two billion
people using English as a means of communication, the importance of speaking skills in our
globalized world cannot be overstated. Within academic discourse, speaking ability is
emphasized in language acquisition, especially when learning English. It is acknowledged
that speaking skills encompass not only the ability to speak but also active listening and
understanding others.
Research on speaking skills is crucial for various reasons. Firstly, it helps us understand
the intricacies of human communication, including how we express ideas, share information,
and connect with others. In educational settings, research on speaking skills guides the
development of curricula, teaching strategies, and student assessment methods, enabling
educators to effectively teach and support students in their speaking skill development.
Strong speaking skills are also highly valued in many professions, and research provides
insights into what makes an effective speaker and how individuals can improve their own
skills for career advancement. Additionally,

research offers strategies to overcome the common fear of public speaking

and enhance public speaking skills, which are essential for leadership roles. In the
field of second language acquisition, research on speaking skills provides valuable
insights into how learners can effectively improve their spoken language abilities.
Lastly, effective speaking skills contribute to improved interpersonal relationships by
facilitating clear and empathetic communication. In summary, research on speaking
skills plays a vital role in understanding and enhancing communication in various
aspects of life.
