Introduction:

Hello there, our dear explorers! We are Retal, Hana, Lujain, Lily, and Mira; the earth explorers! and
today we’re taking you on an adventure to the most (wonderful, attractive) place(s) on earth, The
Waterfalls!

Waterfalls:

To begin with, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “waterfalls”? It could
be a very high cliff with water falling from above, steamy at the bottom of it. It could be The gorgeous
waters coloured with different shades of blue, and surrounded by greenery.

That’s exactly how a waterfall would look like. A waterfall is a river or other body of water's steep fall
over a rocky ledge into a plunge pool below. That means that water falls off a very hiiiigh and steep,
rocky cliff, then falling to the bottom of the waterfall, known as the plunge pool. The process of erosion,
the wearing away of earth, plays an important part in the formation of waterfalls, but we’ll talk about
this later on our journey.

Have you ever wondered how tall is the HIGHEST waterfall in the world? It’s called the Angel falls, also
called “Salto Angel” (which means “the waterfall of the deepest place” in Spanish), with a height of 979
metres off the ground! That’s about one-and-one-fifth times the size of burj khalifa! It’s located in
Bolivar state, Venezuela.

Other examples of famous waterfalls are the Niagara falls . They’re located in the border between the
USA and Canada. It’s about 50 metres high, and is one of the most well-known waterfalls. And ofcourse,
it’s very beautiful. The Victoria falls in Zambia, and the Iguazu Falls in Brazil are just as beautiful.

Formation of waterfalls:

As retal has mentioned before, Erosion is just one process that can form waterfalls. A waterfall may
form across a fault, or crack in the Earth's surface. That means an earthquake, landslide, glacier, or
volcano may also disrupt stream beds and help create waterfalls. How EROSION forms a waterfall is
what ____________ is going to explain to us through the minimized model of a waterfall.

1. Falling water and rock particles erode the soft rock below the waterfall, creating a plunge pool.
2. The hard rock above is undercut as erosion of the soft rock continues.
3. Hard rock overhang above the plunge pool collapses as its weight is no longer supported. The position of the
falls moves back.
4. Erosion continues and the waterfall slowly eats its way upstream, leaving a gorge behind.
Let’s Recap!

So retal has mentioned that a waterfall is where a river flows over a sudden vertical drop.

And Mira had said that Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world, and it is 979 metres tall.

____________told us that The Niagara Falls is the most popular waterfall in the world, and is 50
metres tall.

We also learned that erosion, earthquakes, volcanos, landslides, and glaciers can help in waterfall
formation.

Do you have any further questions?

Let’s test your knowledge by some exciting questions!
