Subject: Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) Page 1 of1 of2 2
stuck at logon when connection remains active after landing
BACKGROUND:
Boeing has issued Ref a) SL that provides operators with details about reports of a CPDLC logon issue when
the connection remains active after landing and Datalink System Reset has been performed.
Information Point: Data link system Reset is performed through Master Submenu of Manager Menu
In the current AIMS-2 BlockPoint Version (BPV) 17, 17.1, and 17A, there is an issue with CPDLC connection
unable to logon to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) center. This behavior is found to be a software issue in the
Communication (COMM) module that prevents the connection from establishing, after Datalink System Reset.
CPDLC Logon issue will occur when the following conditions are met after landing:
a) Operational Program Configuration (OPC) OPC_FDCF2_AUTO_RESET is disabled (10 minutes end of
flight reset).
b) ATC center does not send an End Service uplink message to terminate the connection.
c) Crew does not manually terminate the CPDLC connection.
When a Datalink System Reset is performed while the CPDLC connection remains active, the system will
remain logged on to the last known ATC center and will not allow a new connection request until AIMS power
has been cycled. This prevents the crew from logging on to a new ATC center after take-off and causes the
CPDLC function to be unusable
NOTE: OPC_FDCF2_AUTO_RESET is enabled in AIMS OPC Software for PIA all B777 Airplanes excluding
AP-BMG and BMH. Therefore, CPDLC Logon issue should not occur(less probability) for these airplanes. For
AP-BMG and BMH, OPC_FDCF2_AUTO_RESET is disabled in AIMS OPC Software
CONCLUSION: With the AIMS BPV 1717, 17.1, and 17A, multiple operators will experience the unable to
logon CPDLC condition more often when the crews are not aware of the active connection after the aircraft is
landed; this issue only occurs when Datalink System Reset is performed prior to terminating the active
connection.
Root cause of issue is under investigation by Honeywell. The issue is candidate for future software BP upgrade.
If the issue has already occurred, maintenance should perform an AIMS reset by cycling circuit breakers per
AMM Section 31-41-00 on the ground only to recover the CPDLC function.
