Importance of using games in EFL classrooms

Implementing games in the teaching process can be beneficial and useful. They can improve

student’s communication skills and boost proficiency in learning English as a foreign language.

According to the findings of a several studies: “The results of the study have demonstrated that

the English foreign language students benefit a lot from the use of games in the classroom due to

the nature of this teaching technique that is characterized by fun and play. These results indicate

clearly the importance of games-based teaching and its positive effects on the attitudes of

English foreign language learners as demonstrated in the literature review and the results. To this

end, games should be used in the Moroccan, educational system, be it the primary school, the

secondary school, the college or the university in order to teach English as a foreign

language”( BEN EL MOUDDEN,2021).

Another researche showed that Games are considered to be very important in EFL

classrooms, they provide a source of fun and enjoyment for students while also it is highly

effective technique for EFL learners to acquire the English language( Gozcu,& Caganaga,2016).

The result of another researcher confirmed that games help teachers provide active and

successful learning environment ,and creating more engaging learning experience for the

learners. The implementation of gamification in the English classes has shown a positive

outcomes such as active engagement ,better English skills (especially speaking skill) ,and

improved cognitive achievement (proven by good score )(Rahmani,2020).

Despite the fact that games are associated with fun, we should not deny their significant

pedagogical value in teaching foreign languages. They provide motivation, reduce stress, and

facilitate real communication for students. They improve their communicative competence as
well. By using games in EFL classrooms, students can learn either consciously or unconsciously.

Playing and practicing games in an authentic context helps them improve their language skills

and keeps them interested and engaged.
