There is one popular hadith reported by Ibn
Mas’ud who reported:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,

said, “The son of Adam will not be dismissed from
his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he is
questioned about five issues: his life and how he
lived it, his youth and how he used it, his wealth
and how he earned it and he spent it, and how he
acted on his knowledge.”

Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2416 Grade: Sahih

(authentic) according to Al-Albani

The lesson behind this hadith serves as a good

reminder to all Muslims on how he or she lived his
life on earth. It causes you to reflect and reassess
your actions and behavior.

Here are the 5 questions that will supposedly be

asked on the day of judgement:

(1) How One Lived Its Life on Earth

(2) How One Utilized His Youth
(3) How One Earned Its Wealth
(4) How One Spent Its Wealth
(5) What One Did With His Knowledge

HOW ONE LIVED ITS LIFE ON EARTH

They say that a fool lives to eat and a wise man

eats to live. The real question is what does he eat
to live for?

Is the purpose of his or her life to live in order to

enjoy more earthly pleasures. Or is their time
spent trying to rank higher in righteous deeds and
remembering Allah.

In Surah Al-Humazah Allah warns us,

Woe to every scorner and mocker. Who has gathered

wealth and counted it. He thinks that his wealth will
make him last forever. But no! Verily, he will be
thrown into the crusher.

104:1-4

This is not some new revolutionary idea, but often

it’s a good reminder to do be good and do good. A
piece of wisdom that may help you in your life is
strive to be missed if you were gone. It is a good
standard to live by. You can do that by the
following verse in the Quran and hadith:

1. The best amongst you are those who have the

best manners and character. Reference : Sahih
al-Bukhari 3559 In-book reference : Book 61,
Hadith 68

2. And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw

[yourselves] with your [own] hands into
destruction [by refraining]. And do good;
indeed, Allah loves the doers of good. (Surah Al-
Baqarah 2:195)

3. Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in

prayer, and spend out of what We have
provided for them; (Al-Baqarah 2:3)

4. Then those whose balance (of good deeds) is

heavy,- they will attain salvation (Al-Mumenoon
23:102)

HOW ONE UTILIZED HIS YOUTH

If you already past your youth then this may be
too late for you. Regardless, it is through mistakes
and failures we learn and realize our faults. We
grow from these experiences and become wiser.
All that can be done now is to ask Allah for
forgiveness and he is most merciful and knows
what lies in your heart.

“One of the worst sins is a person taking his sin

lightly.” Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq [Al-Mujalasah wa
Jawahir Al-‘Ilm]

Here are quotes from the Quran on the youth

should act. Majority of the youth should be spent
acquiring information, learning about Islam,
becoming educated and cultivating good
character.

Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but

Him and be good to your parents. Whether one or
both of them reach old age while with you, do not
say to them even a mild rebuke and do not repel
them but rather speak to them a noble word.
Lower for them the wing of humility out of mercy
and say: My Lord, have mercy upon them as they
brought me up when I was small. Surah Al-Isra
17:23-24
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him,
and be kind to parents. Surah An-Nisa 4:36

Fear Allah through whom you ask one another

and establish family ties. Surah An-Nisa 4:1

We have enjoined upon man goodness to his

parents. Surah Al-Ankabut 29:8

HOW ONE EARNED ITS WEALTH

Islam is a fair religion. It condemns ruthless
business practices that try to deceive and take
advantage of others. It rewards those who were
disciplined and determined to earn that which
they have. It’s Allah’s will who actually achieve
success but there is no excuse for not trying.

Narrated Al-Miqdam: The Prophet (saws) said,

“Nobody has ever eaten a better meal than that
which one has earned by working with one’s own
hands. The Prophet (saws) of Allah, David used to
eat from the earnings of his manual labor.”
Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 2072 In-book
reference : Book 34, Hadith 25

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said,

“Allah says, ‘I will be against three persons on the
Day of Resurrection: -1. One who makes a
covenant in My Name, but he proves treacherous.
-2. One who sells a free person (as a slave) and
eats the price, -3. And one who employs a laborer
and gets the full work done by him but does not
pay him his wages” Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari
2227 In-book reference : Book 34, Hadith 174
HOW ONE SPENT ITS WEALTH
One of the most fundamental principles of Islam is
charity (zakat), There are many hadith which
highlight the importance of how you should spend
the wealth Allah has given you.

Salman bin Amir Dabbi narrated that: the

Messenger of Allah said: “Charity given to the poor
is charity, and that given to a relative is two things:
charity and upholding the ties of kinship.” Grade :
Sahih (Darussalam) Reference : Sunan Ibn Majah
1844 In-book reference : Book 8, Hadith 62

Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of Allah,

shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be
treated unjustly. (Al-Anfal 8:60)

“Giving in charity doesn’t decrease your wealth in

the slightest, and the person who pardons is not
increase except in honor and there is no person
who is humble for the sake of Allah, except that
Allah will raise his rank.” (Reference : Sahih Muslim
2588 In-book reference : Book 45, Hadith 90)

Wealth and sons are allurements of the life of this

world: But the things that endure, good deeds, are
best in the sight of thy Lord, as rewards, and best
as (the foundation for) hopes. (Al-Kahf 18:46)

WHAT ONE DID WITH HIS

KNOWLEDGE
Being intelligent can be a gift or a curse. Allah has
given some the capacity and opportunity to
become intelligent and influential. But this surely
is a test. You can use your intelligence to
manipulate and deceive others to get what you
desire at the expense of others. When the day
comes, you will have to answer for this deceitful
nature.

The person who believes he is better than others

and becomes boastful and egotistic of his
intelligent does not realize Allah has given him this
gift. It is not him who acquired this knowledge and
he has let his ego control him.

It is a tremendous responsibility to do good with

this knowledge and pass it on to help improve the
live of others. Thus knowledge can be a gift or a
curse.

CONCLUSION
We covered a lot in this article and I hope you
found it engaging. The main purpose behind
MyIslam.org is that you close the browser a little
wiser than when you opened it. May Allah grant us
sabr and ease in our hearts.

Remember this life is short and it’s temporary. We

must monitor our actions and behaviors and do
what’s best to make a case our to Allah on why we
deserve to enter Jannah. So ask yourself these 5
questions.
(1) How Have I Lived My Life on Earth (In the name
of Allah or for my own selfish pursuits?)
(2) How Have I Utilized My Youth (or what mistakes
have I made and learned)
(3) How Have I Earned My Wealth (on the fruits of
my labor or through taking advantage of others?)
(4) How Have I Spent My Wealth (helping others or
selfish pleasures?)
(5) What Did I Do With This Knowledge (deceive or
empower others?)
