LEARNING COMPETENCY:

 Use the passive and active voice meaningfully in varied contexts (EN7G-III-c-2)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
 Determine the difference between active and passive voice;
 Transform the active into passive voice, and vice versa; and
 Use active and passive voice in specified contexts

ACTIVE VOICE
The sentence is in Active Voice if the subject is the doer of the action. The
structure of the sentence must be: DOER – ACTION – RECEIVER.
Examples:
1. The old father gives the money to the boy.

PASSIVE VOICE
The sentence is in Passive Voice if the subject is the recipient of the action, and
the object or receiver is the focus of the sentence. The structure of the sentence must be:
RECEIVER – ACTION – DOER.

Examples:
1. The money was given to the boy by the old father.

2. The gavel was pounded by the judge.

Verbs in the passive voice are formed by using the correct be-verb form, together
with the past participle form of the main verb / given verb.
Examples:
1. These animals are owned by the farmer.
2. The fruits were sold by Cindy.

1. when the doer of the action is unknown or not important;
2. when showing that the receiver of the action is more important than its doer;
and
3. when, for one reason or another, the writer or speaker prefers not to mention
the doer of the action.
EXERCISE 1: Determine whether the underlined verb is in the active voice or in the passive
voice by writing AV for active or PV for passive in each blank.

CHANGING ACTIVE TO PASSIVE VOICE AND VICE VERSA


1. Place the receiver of the action as the subject and use the same verb tense of the
given verb in the passive voice.
2. If needed, place the doer preceded by the word by at the end of the sentence.
