STT Senice 8 Power Train ‘The arrow in the image shows the direction that wheel parts can fly, with explosive force, if installed improperly or if parts are damaged. Tire and Rim Safety ‘Always put the tire and wheel assembly into a tire inflation cage before adding air iit is re- moved from the machine. Inspecting Wheel Inspect wheel components for defects, observing the following precautions: Clean rims and repaint to prevent corrosion and to facilitate inspection and tie instal- lation Be careful to clean all drt and rust from the lock ring and gutter. Its important to lock the lock ring into the correct position. A fiter on the air pump equipment to remove moisture from air lines helps to prevent corrosion. Check the filer periodically to be sure that its working properly |= Clean parts for a proper attachment, particularly the gutter section which holds the lock ring in proper position. 1B Check the rim for cracks. Replace all cracked, badly worn, damaged, and severely rusted components with new parts of the same size and type, Replace a component when condition is in doubl. Parts that are cracked, damaged, or excessively corroded are weakened. Bent or re- paired parts does not engage properly. | Reinflate a tre that has been run flat only when inspecting the tre, tube, flap, rim, and wheel assembly Components can be damaged or dislocated during the time the tire was run flat or se- Fiously under-inflated. Check the side ring, flange, bead seat, lock ring, and O-ring for damage and make sure that they are secure in the gutter before installation. | Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to rework, weld, heat, or braze any rim ‘components that are cracked, broken, or damaged Replace them with new parts, or spare parts that are not cracked, broken, or dam- ‘aged and which are of the same size and type. Heating a part can weaken it to the ‘extent, that itis unable to withstand forces of inflation or operation. Removing Wheel 41. Block the wheels that are not being serviced. 2. Raise the machine until the wheel to be serviced just clears the ground using a jack, hoist, or any suitable method, air No: 2331804683,2,9007201887795851 en-US. STT Senice 8 Power Train yea Safety Precaution > Make sure that the method used to elevate the machine is stable and capable of raising and supporting the weight. Ifthe tre to be re- ‘moved is on an oscillating axle, be sure to block the carrier. 3. Crib or securely block the machine before proceeding with wheel removal. A DANGER Safety Precaution > Attempt to remove the wheel rim or wheel components such as flanges or wheel clamps only when all pressure has been released from the tie. A damaged wheel rim part under pressure can burst ‘and cause severe injury or fatality 4, Remove the valve core and exhaust all ar from the tire. 1 wore: stand lear orto the ste during deflation 5. Check the valve stem by running a piece of wire through the stem to make sure that it is not plugged berore proceeding with wheel service. Safety Precaution > Donot look into the valve stem while clearing restrictions. 6. Remove the wheel using a hoist and sling capable of supporting the load. Safety Precaution > Use caution when removing wheels or heavy rim components. Stand to one side and keep hands and fingers clear when using de- ‘mounting tools. The tool can slip and cause injury. 7. Remove tie from wheel using accepted shop practices. Installing Wheel | Nore: Review safety wamings and cautions for removing before beginning work 218 No: 2331804683,2,9007201887795851 en-US. STT Senice 8 Power Train Check that the articulation locking bar is secured between both frame attachments, and that the Do Not Operate tag is in place on the Off, On, and start switch, Verify that all blocking and cribbing is securely in place. Clean all whee! and hub installing surfaces. Remove all dit, lubricant, or paint before installing wheel Replace the wheel using a hoist and sling or forklift capable of safely supporting the load, NOTE: Make sure that the valve stem is aligned with any clear- ance slot in the axle hub. Install attaching hardware and secure the tire and rim in accordance with the torque settings specified in the Appendix. Lower the machine to the ground once the te is installed Using jacks, hoists, or other suitable method to lower the machine. Remove all cribs and blocks. Remove and stow articulation lock. Remove Do Not Operate tag from Off, On, and Start knob. Mismatched Rims DANGER Safety Precaution Mismatched rim parts are dangerous, Improper rim selection can cause these operating problems: Tire slippage Excessive flexing Tube pinching Overheating Valve stem tear outs Sidewallfalure Ply separation Blowouts Most rims look alike but all vary somewhat in certain design features. Itis these differences between different types of wheel rims that make mixing parts an unsafe approach, Its im- portant that the wheel rim parts actually attach together to give the tie a long service-lfe and safe function. ‘Often side-rings, flanges, and lock rings of different types appear to be properly seated, but wide gaps are present that are frequently dificult to see. The rim cross-sections show cor- rect, safe matchings of rim parts, and mismatched rings and bases which almost always create an unsafe operating condition. 219 No: 2331804683,2,9007201887795851 en-US. STT Senice 8 Power Train ‘Check Wheel Nut Tightening Torque Tighten the whee! nuts in an alternating pattem. Tighten the wheel nuts to the correct torque upon initial installation or reinstallation on the machine. Check the wheel nuts for correct torque every four hours for the fist 12 hours of oper- ation, Check the wheel nuts for correct torque every eight hours for the next 32 hours of op- eration, Check whee! nuts every 100 hours, or weekly thereafter. NOTE: Before installing and tightening, remove all pain, dirt, and rust from both sides of wheels at mating surfaces around lug bolt holes. These areas must be clean, Also, clean axle hub surfaces which mate with rear side of wheels. Proper torque cannot be main- tained unless these surfaces are clean and free of paint, dit, or l- bricant, Recapping For some offroad operations, such as mucking and hauling, recapping tres can be cost ef- fective alternative to replacement with new tres. Most tires are generally recappable, de- pending on how well they have been inspected during their service fe, ‘The deciding factor is the severity of the job the tire must do. Some jobs are too tough for recapped tires. High speed, overloading, and long service at low inflation pressure take too much life out of the cord body for it to last longer than the life of one tread, ‘On large tires with wire in the body, recapping is advantageous, Modern recappers can re- ‘cap wire and can replace the wire, if necessary. Precautions Before Operating the Machine Observe the following precautions when putting the machine back in service | Donot use undersized rims. Use recommended rim for tre. Consult catalogs for proper tire and rim matching Do not averload or over-inflate tire or rim assemblies. Check the rim assemblies if spe- cial operating conditions are required. Excessive overload can damage the tire and rim assembly. Never installa tube in a tubeless tire and rim assembly when the rim is suspected of leaking Loss of air pressure through fatigue, cracks, or other fractures in a tubeless rim wars of a potential rim failure, This safety feature is lost when tubes are used with leaking rims. Con- tinued use causes the rim to burst with explosive force. Always inspect rims and wheels for damage during tre checks. Early detection of potential rim failures can prevent serious injury. Never add or remove an attachment or modify a rim by heating, welding, or brazing unless the tire has been removed and approval has been received from the rim manu facturer. Modification or heating ofa rim or one of its parts can weaken it so that it cannot withstand forces created by inflation or operation. 220 No: 2331804683,2,9007201887795851 en-US.
