What I Can Do

1. f (x)=x2 at the point (-1,3)

X0=-1

Y0=3

Y ‘ = 2x

Y ‘ (-1) = 2(-1)

Y ‘ (-1) = -2

P(-1,3)

y-3=-2(x-(-1))

The equations for f(x)=x2 at the point (-1,3) are y=-2

And y-3=-2(x-(-1)).

2. f(x)= x3 ; parallel to the line y=3x+1

Y ‘ = 3x2

Since it is parallel, its slope must be equal to 3

3x2=3

Solving for x:

X2=1

X =±1

Finding the corresponding y:

For x=1 f(1)=13=1

For x=-1 f(-1)=(-1)3=-1

Now write the equations as point-slope form:

For x=1 and y=1:

y-1=3(x-1)

Y=3x-2

For x=-1 and y=-1:

Y+1=3(x+1)

Y=3x+2

The equations for the tangent lines to f(x)=x3 that are parallel to y=3x+1
Are y=3x-2 and y=3x+2.
