Polar Operations Above N78°

S-R-G Codes
• Solar Radiation S1 to S2 – No Restriction
S3 - Limited to FL310
S4 to S5 – Requires non polar routing

• Radio Blackout Scale R1 to R5 – No Restriction

• Geomagnetic Storm Scale G1 to G2 – no restriction

G3 - Requires non polar routing if predictive
percentage is above 60%

Fuel
• Jet A1 freezes at -47° Jet A freezes at -40°
• Cold fuel transfer when outers at -35°
• Fuel temperature low ECAM when Feed, Trim or Outers reach -40°

Navigation
• ± N82 – Will get ECAM to change from magnetic to true, vice versa at N72
• ♦349G means Grid track on ND (True) on all NAV modes except Plan
• Longitude crossings – time marker pg – select long – select increments and
how many increments are needed.
• LIDO RSI has track and distance from a specific waypoint
• OMC RAIG has track and distance from Lat/Long

Weather
Weather is not displayed on VD (generally all below FL250 in polar region)

Terrain
• DARD – Greenland (FL140), Edmonton (FL170) and Tehran (FL170) initially.
• Terrain function goes to standby in Polar region
• If you see magenta terrain on ND, it indicates that it is non-charted.

Communications
• Satcom Short Codes found in LIDO RSI – North America – COM – Gander

En-route Alternates
• RAIG Ch 2 – Area briefing requirements
• OMA 8.3.0.10.1 Polar medical diverts – continue to Destination until
consultation with ops has been established.
• Preferred diversion airfields for medical:
South of N60 and East of NP – UUDD or OMDB
North of N60 – ESSA / EFHK / EDDH / BIKF / PANC
South of N60 and West of NP – CYEG / CYWG / CYVR
• Runway variation is high so need to calculate magnetic to true for x wind
limits if taking wind direction from Metar or TAF (NSS) as it is in True.
• If take the wind from the Tower or ATIS it is in Magnetic.
