The 2 mm thick bar shown in Fig. is loaded axially with a constant force of 10 KN at the 40 mm face to plate. When a 20 mm hole is
drilled, what is the magnitude of stress concentrations near the hole?

400 MPa

1000 MPa

250 MPa

100 MPa

Solution

A stress concentration factor is defined as the ratio of the maximum stress to the nominal or reference stress. It is normally denoted as
Kt , which quantifies the stress concentration.

Kt = σmax/σnom

Nominal stress (σnom) is the stress without the stress concentrators such as grooves while the maximum stress (σmax) is the maximum
stress with the stress raiser feature

Given: F = 10 kN = 10,000 N

t = 2 mm (thickness)

width of race of plate = 40 mm

KE = Stress concentration factor (theoretical)

=1+ 2b

For circular hole, KE = 3 (∵ a = b)

= 125 N/mm2 = 125 MPa

10 × 1000
σ0 = 40 × 2

∴ Stress on hole = (KE) × σ0

(σmax)actual = 3 × 125 = 375 MPa

Stress concentration near the hole 

= σmax - σ0

= (375 - 125) = 250 MPa
