1. An axial flow fan has a hub diameter of 2.5 m and a tip diameter of 5 m. It rotates at 17.49
rad/s and when handling 133.9 m3/s of air it develops a theoretical head of 35 m of air.
Assuming that the velocity of flow is independent of radius and that the energy transfer per
unit length of blade is constant, determine;
(i) Blade inlet angles at the hub and tip [6 marks]
(ii) Blade outlet angles at the hub and tip [6 marks]
Euler equation is given as E = (u/g) (u - vf cot𝛽’2)
2. An aircraft is flying as a speed of 1100km/h. The Mach meter reads 0.9. Assuming the
properties of air as R = 287 J/kgK and γ = 1.4, determine the temperature at the flight level.
[3 marks]
3. Determine the power required to overcome the skin drag of a submarine 5 m diameter and
20 m long travelling at 5 km/h. For Re>105, CD = 0.75. Density of sea water is 1030 kg/m3,
Kinematic viscosity = 0.8 x 10-6 m2/s. Assume the shape to be a cylinder. [3 marks]
4. A plane weighs 30 kN with wing area of 25 m2. The power from the engine is 7500 kW
and the flight speed is 900 km/hr. The power required to overcome drag is 65 % of the
engine power. Calculate the value of 𝐶𝐷 and 𝐶𝐿 . Take the density of air around the plane
as 1.2 kg/m3. [7 marks]
