COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

According to Cambridge Dictionary, comparative adjectives compare one person,

animal or thing with another.

 Pigeons are smaller than ostrich.

 Airplanes are more dangerous than motorcycles.

 Susan is prettier than her sister.

To form the comparative, we use the –er suffix with adjectives of one syllable
 Elephants are stronger than lions.
 Cats are smaller than dogs.

Two syllables adjectives ending in –y change y to i and take the –er endings.
 You are funnier than my friend.
 He looks happier than yesterday.

Adjectives of three or more syllables form the comparative with more/less + the
adjective
 That girl is more beautiful than the model.

Note: Some Adjectives have irregular comparative forms, so you have to be careful
when you use them.

46
UNIT 3
• More, less and fewer

Fewer is the comparative of few (used with countable, plural nouns).

Less is the comparative of little (mostly used before uncountable, singular nouns).
More is the opposite of ‘fewer’ and ‘less’ and can be used in quite a few different ways.

 A receptionist would make less money than a director

 There were fewer eggs in the fridge than we had hoped.
 My sister is more talented than me.

Recuperado de: https://www.aprendeinglessila.com/2016/04/diferencia-less-fewer/

47
The comparative form: more is usually used with adjectives that have more than one
syllable(except for adjectives ending in -y) to express that there is more of a particular
quality:

 My sister is more talented than me.

The determiner (more + noun): when more is used before a noun it acts as a
determiner to statethat there is more of something. Generally, the preposition ‘of’ is not
used in this structure.

 She has more children than any of her friends.

 I always have more homework to do than my siblings.

The lonely one: more can be used on its own if the context that it is being used in has
already been established and is clear to the listener.

 Can I have some more please? (A child asking his mother for
more of what is already inhis cup)
 I would like to have more but I think it’s too soon right now.
