General packing specification Doc No: NWS1092
1. Scope
This specification defines the general requirements for valve and its fitting packaging to protect
the products from loss , mechanical damage and atmosphere corrosion during the delivery and
storage, and to make the products transported to the destination easily and safely.
.
2. Coverage
Gate valves, Globe valves, Check valves, Control valves, Ball valves, butterfly valves
3. Standard Cited
4.1 Valves
4.1.1 Stocked over 6 months (6 months included), the valves shall be re-tested before delivery.
4.1.2 All the outer surface, inner cavity and sealing surface of valves (including the valves painted) shall
4.1.3 Gate valve, Globe valve, Check valve and the TC butterfly valve (triple offset) shall be in fully
close position; T butterfly valve (concentric) and TB butterfly (double offset) shall be in partly open
position (no more than 5 degrees); Ball valve shall be in full-open position; the Control valve shall
be in the fully open or close position when its actuator loses signals.
4.1.4 For Check valves (including swing check valve and tilting disc check valve and non-slam check
valve ), buffering material shall be placed between sealing faces of the seat ring and that of the
disc , to prevent the damage caused by hitting during shipping and handling.
4.1.5 All external connections such as vents, drains shall be capped or plugged after treated with rust
preventative.
4.1.6 The grease cap shall be installed properly. Stem exposed outside shall be protected by oil paper.
4.1.7 Any accessories like hand wheel, gear box, disassembled from main valve for the ease of
shipment shall have internal surface cleaned free of scale and other foreign matter. The carbon
steel parts that are joined with the main valve shall be in application of rust preventative. For
control valves, no accessories can be separated from the main valve except the hand-wheel when
needed.

4.1.8 For flanged end valves, blind covers shall be used to protect the flange sealing surface:
a) For valves less than NPS 14, use plastic covers, and the covers should be plugged into 4 flange
bolt holes as figure 1, if plastic cover can’t be used for the limitations of the structure , the valve
shall be packaged as c) ,
b) For valves NPS 14~NPS 24 (not including NPS 24), use waterproof, damp-proof and high
intensity hollow plastic cover and belts as figure 2, the plastic cover spec: thickness 8mm,
interlayer type" #" , color is blue; Each plastic cover shall have 4 belt holes and through each
belt hole use 2 belts to connect the cover with the valve.
c) For valves NPS 24 and larger , use waterproof, damp proof and high intensity hollow plastic cover
and belts, the plastic cover spec: thickness 10mm, interlayer type" #" ,color is black; Each plastic
cover shall have 4 belt holes and through each belt hole use 2 belts to connect the cover with the
valve.
d) China National Standard valves can use blind circular plastic covers.
Figure 1 Figure 2
4.1.9 For butt-welding end, socket end valve, end of the valve shall be covered with cancellate foam
plastic paper and fixed with tape to protect the valve from being contaminated.
d) Apart from a),b),c),for control valve, one piece of operation manuals and one piece of product
a) Spare parts subjected to damage such as packing and gasket shall be well-formed.
b) Parts such as counter flange and stem shall be cleaned and dried. If necessary, the counter
flange shall be degreased, and its sealing surface shall be protected by a blind cover,

5. The Case
5.1 Valve and large dimension parts shall be packed in plywood case generally. The plywood case
shall be designed and made according to the specification NWS1091 《 Specification for Plywood
Packing case》 .
5.2 For GGC( Gate, Globe and Check valves ) valves NPS 36 and above (no less than 150LB) or
NPS 28 (no less than 300LB) or NPS 20 and above (more than 600LB), Ball valves NPS 24 and
above or valves more than 3 tons, packing methods is defined in the specification NWS1093
5.3 Small parts such as packing, gaskets and fastening piece can be packaged into the carton case,
but the carton case can only be as an internal package, and cannot be as an outer package for
delivery except the air packing, domestic express delivery and customer special requirement.
6.1.1 FOR GGC Valves (Gate valve, Globe valve and Check valve)
a) Products with same order No. or same specification shall be packed and shipped together;
b) Place products into the case reasonably, and spare enough space for buffering material. Put
cardboards or foam plastics between the products as a cushion then fix up products by wooden
bars or plywood bars properly in order to avoid damages caused by collision during shipping. To
protect the painting of valve and operational device, foam cushion shall be lined with between the
c) Stainless steel products cannot be packed together with carbon steels in general; If valves not too
many, stainless steel valves (or parts) and carbon steel valves can be placed into the same case.
They shall be packed by plastic bags separately. Package for stainless valves shall be in
accordance with paragraph 6.1.2. After that, they shall be packed by a large plastic bag and put
into the case. other package requirements shall be in accordance with 6.1.1 paragraph d)~e)
d) Lay an appropriate plastic bag in the case before placing valves or parts into the case, refer to
Figure 3.

e) Place products into the packing case orderly, and ensure the gravity-center of valve is close to the
center of the case, and the valves shall be fixed up with a buffering bar. Then seal the plastic bag

6.1.2 Stainless steel valves shall be packed alone in a single plastic bag. The valves being put into the
6.1.3 Insufflate anti-rust oil on each valve without painting such as carbon steel valves, and then pack
them one by one in the plastic bags. After that, the package shall be conformed to chapter 6.1 e).
6.2 Ball valves (1.2 ton ~3 ton) except valves with distinctive contour size shall be packed in a
b) Drill a proper hole matched with the hole on the support leg of the valve and then fix it up on the
plywood base with stud (GB901), spring pad (GB93) and nut (GB6170). The plywood base shall
be made according to standard NWS1091 《 Specification for Plywood Packing case 》 chapter 4
d) Append front, back board and profile board on the base according to standard NWS1091 chapter
e) Latch up the case. This process should be done according to standard NWS1091 chapter 4, 6.3
6.3.1 Spare parts subjected to damage such as graphite packing and gasket shall be packed in a carton
box separately, use foam plastic particles filling in the space between spare parts as a cushion.
The thickness of plastic particles cannot be less than 2mm. Please refer to Figure 6

6.3.2 Metal spare parts such as stem, shall be wrapped and separated by cancellate foam plastic paper
Figure 7
6.3.3 Metal spare parts such as counter flange shall be treated as chapter 4.2, then put them into the
case orderly. If the flange needs to defatted, it shall be packed separately in a plastic bag then be
sealed. After that, the package shall be conformed to chapter 6.1.1- e).
6.4 Packing requirements of electric actuator’s valve and the electro-accessories packing
requirements of Electric actuator shall be commonly installed on the valve when packing and
transportation. And the electro-accessories (for example filter and electromagnetism valve)
a) Transportation in packing case (plywood case), Put one valve or several valves in one packing
case, the wooden bars or plywood bars shall be used to fix up the valve with electric actuator to
prevent the product moving freely. The requirement of the wooden bars is the same as 6.1.1-b),
