CENTRAL ELECTRONICS UNIT


(CEU)
• The CEU Type II is the common electrical interface for
various imaging products.
• The CEU Type II will interface with:
– Star SAFIRE
– Star SAFIRE II
– Star SAFIRE III
– Star HD
– BRITE Star (Block I and II)
– Sea Star
– Sea FLIR
• Due to different video requirements between the types of
imaging equipment, the video processing circuitry is
changed for different systems with plug-in video PCB’s
specific to a system type.

CEU Operation

• Upon power up, CEU will load software into the


FPGA’s from the FLASH memory
• Automatically starts the BIT
• Automatically begins the FIT
• Operator will interface the system via the HCU

• Supplies conditioned +28VDC to the Output


Power Connector J2.

• The CEU Power supply also supplies +12VDC


to connector J2.

FLIR On and Auto STOW

• The FLIRON signal from the SCU turns on the surge


protection Circuitry, allowing +28VDC to reach the
Power Supply Assembly in the CEU. This powers on the
entire system.

Cable Equalizer

• The cable equalizer network provides


compensation for video signal loss through the
W6 or W15 cables from the TFU. These circuits
are capable of compensating for cable lengths
up to 100 feet.

Output Video Drivers

• Buffer and drive video signals from the video


card to the J7-10 video connectors on the front
panel.

Ground Transient Suppressors

• Allows for digital, analog, and chassis grounds to


remain independent, but keeps the potential
between grounds below 2.4VDC.

EMI/ESD Suppression

• Connectors J3, J4, and J5 have capacitors


between the contacts and chassis ground for
EMI protection.
• All signal lines have 4kV of ESD provided to it
providing limited protection from ESD damage.

PROTECTION OF THE CIRCUITRY

Heater Control

• +28VHTR is filtered and controlled in the same


manner as the auxiliary +28VDC supply for the
output power connector J2.

• The only difference is the higher current


capability.

Introduction

• The CEU backplane provides the electrical


connections between all boards in the CEU,
including the System Interface (3204150).
• Each slot is a VME standard connector between
the two main connectors. These additional slots
support inter-board communications.
• The System Interface connects to the CEU
Backplane with a 232-pin connector.

Troubleshooting and Repair

• Due to extensive wire runs and limited number


of active components, the CEU Backplane is
restricted to removal and replacement.
Continuity checks can be accomplished easily to
verify faults within the CEU Backplane. Refer to
Schematic number 3204151SCH.

Introduction

• The Power Supply Assembly receives unfiltered


+28VDC from the aircraft.

• The input voltage is filtered and regulated into


the necessary DC voltages needed by the entire
system.

Shutdown Control

• Controls the start-up sequence of all the DC-DC


converters.
• If aircraft power drops below 18VDC a
comparator will shut down the DC-DC
converters.
• Warning indicator is sent to the Serial Interface
Card indicating low input voltage before it shuts
down.

Temperature Sensor and Fan
Control
• Onboard temperature sensor sends a signal to the SIC
representative of the internal temperature in the rear of
the CEU enclosure.
• The SIC will then control the fan speed by varying the
fan input voltage according to temperature.
• Three fan speeds:
– High (28VDC)
– Medium (24VDC)
– Low (20VDC)
• A fourth input is Fan Voltage Control. This signal
determines the voltage applied to the PWM circuitry for
the fan.

Built-In-Test (BIT)

• Internal to each DC-DC Converter are current


limiting and over-voltage protection circuits.

• The converters will automatically shutdown if a


fault condition is detected.

• Input video is buffered and DC restored before it


is passed to the analog-to-digital converters.

High Level Video Processing
• The circuit is comprised of 4 FPGA’s.
• Processes both infrared and visible light video
signals.
• Functions:
– Haze penetration
– Blending
• After processing the video signals are sent to
four 6-channel multiplexers which select the
output of each of the video sources on the front
panel of the CEU and to the AutoTracker.

Symbology Generation and Control

• Symbology information to be overlaid onto


video is generated in the High Level Video
Processing circuit and is controlled by
commands from the single board computer
(SBC).
• Two forms of Symbology Command
1. Symbology Overlay Command determines when to overlay
symbology.
2. Symbology Color determines the color of the symbology.

Output Video and Symbology
• When video leaves high level processing it is converted
to analog video.

• Analog video is sent to a 4:1 multiplexer where it is


multiplexed with white, grey, or black video.

• Symbology is drawn onto the video on a pixel-by-pixel


basis replacing a video pixel with symbology video data.

• Video is filtered and sent to the front panel for output to


the monitor.

System Timing Generation


• The High Level Video Processor will generate the
necessary video timing signals needed by the entire
system for video generation.
– The Infrared video becomes the master sync for the entire
system.

• Timing signals are stripped and sent out of the video


board to the system as HD+ and VD+.

SMPTE Video
• The CSSP Receives four channels
of SMPTE 292M 1280x720P video.

– Three SMPTE HD video channels are sent


from the TFU via the W22 connector to the
CEU front panel.
– Four video cables route the SMPTE video
channels from the front panel to the CSSP
board in the CEU.
– One channel is not used and is for future
expansion (possible upgrades to the SVIP)

SMPTE Cable Equalizers

• There are four adaptive cable equalizer IC’s


(LMH0344SQ) One for each SMPTE video
channel.

• The cable equalizers boost the incoming signals


to maintain signal integrity before processing.

Serial-to-Parallel Converters

• There are four deserializers, one for each


of the adaptive cable equalizers.

• Each channel is converted from serial to


20 bit parallel data and sent to the FPGA
for digital symbology overlay.

Symbology Overlay

• The CSSP monitors the VME backplane for


writes from the processor into the Phase III
video boards graphic memory space.

• The CSSP FPGA scales and overlays the


symbology graphics onto the deserialized digital
video. (stretches symbology to approximately
match the SMPTE 292M 1280x720 video
format).

Parallel-to-Serial Converters

• There are four Serializers, one for each channel.

• Parallel digital data from the FPGA is converted


to a serial data stream.

• Serial data is clocked out on the 1.485GHz clock


generated by the GO1555 IC’s and sent to the
cable drivers.

• The CSSP generates four DC supplies

3.3V, 2.5V, 1.8V, and 1.0V
• Power supply supervisor
– Monitors the supplies and ensures correct tolerances
