Gimbal Drive System

Drive System Overview

• The gimbal provides a 4-axis, gyro-

stabilized platform for the imager.
– Inner Azimuth, Outer Azimuth, Inner Elevation
and Outer Elevation
– The outer elevation axis has mechanical
rotational capability of 30 degrees up and
approximately 120 degrees down.
– The outer azimuth axis has mechanical
rotational capability of 360 degrees in either
direction.

Terminology
• Gimbal
– Electronics and mechanical apparatuses used to control the movement of the turret for
sensor pointing requirements.
• Skillet
– Area on top of the TFU and contains the Digital Gimbal Controller PCB, Elevation Power
Distribution PCB, hub, slip ring assembly, and Fuse panel.
• Port Side
– Contains the Inner Azimuth and Elevation PCB and the elevation Motor
• Starboard Side
– Contains the Angular Sensor PCB and the Elevation Resolver.
• Yoke
– TFU inner ring which the front and rear covers attach and allows rotation in the elevation
axis. The imager mounts inside the yoke.
• Imager
– Electronics and optical equipment needed for the sensor assemblies which make up the Star
SAFIRE III system. Connects to the TFU through the slip ring wire harness and is removable
as a complete subassembly for troubleshooting and repair.
• Payload
– Alternate name for the Imager. When referring to documentation for the STAR III the terms
Payload and Imager are interchangeable

Drive System Overview
• Construction of the gimbal drive system consists
of a stationary hub, mounting plate, and skillet
mated to a rotating yoke that carries the imager.
• The two sections are coupled together at the
base of the hub by a pre-loaded bearing
assembly.
• Signals passing between the two sections are
routed through the slip ring which is mounted
internal to the hub. One end of the slip ring is
attached to the stationary hub and the other is
attached to the rotating yoke.

Gyro Drive

• Provides signals necessary to spin the main

gyro.
– The gyro has a two-phase, 6-pole motor that requires
a quadrature drive (90° out-of-phase).
– DSP and drive circuit develops two (phase A and
phase B) 800Hz square waves to start the motor and
then 800Hz sine waves to run the motor.

Gyro LVDT Drive

• The main gyro uses two LVDT’s to measure the

displacement.
• Primary excitation is a 42.3Khz sine wave
1.9Vrms.
• Secondary coil feedback signals from the gyro
LVDT are buffered, filtered, and then sent to
ADC’s.
• Once the feedback is digitized, it is sent to the
GED on the GCAN bus for stabilization control.

Airborne Training Center Gimbal Drive

Portland, Oregon Systems 49

Main Gyro Torquer Drive

• Once the displacement of the gyro is measured

it must be corrected allowing the gyro to
continue operation.
• The DSP sends correction drive signals to the
Torquer Drive circuit.
• These signals are amplified and drive the main
gyro back to centered position.
