SHE PROGRAM

25.0 PRESSURE TESTING

25.1 PURPOSE
This document describes the minimum safety requirements for conducting pressure testing of
equipment and piping.

25.2 DEFINITIONS
PSI – stands for pounds per square inch. A unit of measure for pressure.
BAR – it is unit used for measuring gauge pressure.
Work permit – a formal document that authorizes a group of workers to perform their certain task at
a particular place and time.

25.3 RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisors

The Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that practices identified in the General Safe Work
Practices (GSWP) are applied by the personnel under their supervision.

Technical Workers

The technical workers are responsible for safe execution of the task by adhering to the pressure
testing procedures and requirements.

25.4 GENERAL SAFE PRACTICES


 A valid work permit must be issued and present at the site at all times.

 The work area must be barricaded with safety signs posted.

 Only authorized person are allowed to enter the pressure testing area.

 The location where the pressure test is to be carried out shall be properly identified.

 Observe LOTO (lock out tag out) procedure.

 Hearing protections must be worn especially during releasing of pressure.

 Sufficient vent relief capacity shall be provided to ensure vessels cannot be subject to a
vacuum during the draining of test fluid or by sudden cooling.

 Adequate restraints shall be installed prior to testing to restrict movement of piping and

joints during the testing.

 Hazardous gases or vapors shall be vented clear of any area where personnel are working or
where there is a possible source of ignition.
