1) According to the writer, Gerald, the Rose Beetle Man is a strange local fixture in Corfu.

He
dresses eccentrically and never speaks ,though he plays the flute and sings in a strange nasal
voice.He sells variety of pet animals including beetles. He had sharp fox like face with large
slanting dark brown eyes. He dress also fascinates the writer. He was wearing bottled green
shapeless wide hat with floppy brim which is now covered with dust and has wine stains and
cigratte burns.His shirt was all torn & greyed with sweat. His shoes were weired with upturned
toes decorated with pompoms.

2) Deserving our sympathy: Gerald sympathisis with beetle man as he hardly earns for his day to
day living his clothes are torned and covered with dust. His eye sight is too weak because of
cataract. The writer is upset as he got to know that beetle man couldn’t speak.
