DEFINITION OF DECENT WORK

Decent work sums up the aspirations of people in their working lives. It

involves opportunities for work that is productive and delivers a fair income,
security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects
for personal development and social integration, freedom for people to
express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect
their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men.

1. Read these five situations and analyze if these people are in decent
working conditions or not.
2. In the cases you believe that they are not working under decent
conditions think of possible solutions for each case.

After reading the definition by the ILO (International Labour Organization), what
can you add to your own definition of Decent Work?

IQBAL MASIH’S LIFE

Iqbal Masih was a Pakistani boy, living life in a nightmare. At the age of four, his father
sold him to a carpet store for twelve dollars. He was a slave, and worked on looms until
the age of ten. He escaped, and was eventually saved by Ehsan Ulla Khan, founder of the
Bondage Labor Liberation Front.

Iqbal suffered while working on the loom, and he refused to go back. He was both
verbally and physically abused, and not well fed. Every night, he was chained to his
carpet loom, on which he worked for over twelve hours a day. Because he had to bend
over for so many hours, his back became curved, causing him to stop growing. His lungs
were affected as well. Because he inhaled a lot of dust from the factory, he had a hard
time breathing. After Iqbal was rescued, he became a member of the Bondage Labor
Liberation Front, ot BLLF. His speeches raised a lot of interest within Pakistan as to the
labor conditions. Iqbal's began speaking internationally, making him a hero at the age
of twelve! He was awarded the Reebok Human Rights Youth Award.

Most people think that children are not mature enough to make a difference, but
clearly, Iqbal's actions prove that kids do matter.

Then, on April 16, 1995, Easter Sunday, Iqbal was murdered. News went flying around
about the death of Iqbal Masih. The only thing that we can guess is that the Carpet
Mafia murdered him, because Iqbals' protests had decreased the profits of the carpet
mills. They wanted his impact to end, so they shot him with a rifle. He was just a normal
twelve-year-old boy with a dream to help others.

Iqbal's speeches still live on today. Our world is still cruel and filled with hatred, but,
because of people like Iqbal, we show that we can change it. Iqbal was truly an amazing
person. He is definitely a great hero.

1. Why did his father sell him to a carpet factory?

2. What consequences did he face in the loom?
3. What is the theory of his death?

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community
lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum
standard of living. Poverty means that the income level from
employment is so low that basic human needs can't be met.
Poverty-stricken people and families might go without proper
housing, clean water, healthy food, and medical attention. Each
nation may have its own criteria for determining how many of its
people are living in poverty.

After reading the definition of poverty and watching the video answer
the following questions.

1. What 3 problems must be tackled to eliminate poverty?

2. What are the risks of unemployment?
3. What causes unemployment?
4. What is the goal of the Decent Work and Economic

5. What are the solutions?

THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF AN EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT

Before you hire someone you need to ensure that both you and the job candidate
are on the same page. The best way to do this is to utilize a contract of
employment. There are several essential elements of an employment contract
that you need to know about before you reach this point. This post is only a
starting point that is designed to get you thinking about employment contracts.

Employment contracts define the employee-employer relationship. They can be

written, verbal, or implied and are designed to protect your company and your
employee. These legal documents need to be detailed to ensure that everyone
knows exactly what to expect. With a well written employment contract there
shouldn’t be any surprises about the job.

IS IT BETTER TO HIRE AN EMPLOYEE OR AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR?

Basically an employment contract will clearly outline the who, what,
where, when, why, and how of the job. This is the basis of the working
relationship. Delegate the task of writing employment contracts to your
legal team. Always allow any signing parties an adequate amount of time to
read through the fine print before asking them to sign.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF AN EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT:

Names and address of all parties involved

Description of business
Clearly defined job position and role
Company specific requirements and/or protections
Length of job and duration of schedule/work hours
Pay, compensation, & benefits
Employee classification category
Privacy policies
Performance requirements
Tasks & duties
Terms of relationship
Termination guidelines
Signatures and dates

THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF AN EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAID OFF, FIRED, AND TERMINATED
Are there other things to include in your employment contract? Quite possibly, but
that’s up to your legal team to decide. There may be some overlap with your
employee handbook and that’s ok. When you can clearly spell out the details of a job
it will save you headaches later on.

Both your company and the new employee must accept the terms and agreements
of the employment contract to have a binding arrangement. Employment contracts
can hold up in the court of law so you absolutely must take them seriously.

Do you have questions about employment contracts? Always consult with your
legal team to ensure that your company’s employment contracts are legitimate and
work in the favor of all parties involved.

There are some key differences between being fired, terminated, and laid off, and it’s
important to know the definitions before deciding what to say to employers.

Why this matters: There are some risks that come with saying you were laid off when
you were actually fired for performance or policy violations.

And if you were laid off, you never want to sound like you were fired, so it’s important
that you use the right language when telling employers what happened.

Being fired means that the company ended your employment for reasons specific to
you. This may also be referred to as “terminated” by some companies. Getting laid off is
different, and means that the company eliminated your position for strategic or
financial reasons and not through any fault of yours.

Common reasons for being fired include poor performance, violation of company
policies, failure to learn the job after being hired, or failure to get along with team
members.

On the other hand, a layoff is typically something that happens to more than one
person at a time and is triggered by company changes, restructuring, acquisitions,
financial struggles, pivots in the business model, economic downturn, etc.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAID OFF, FIRED, AND TERMINATED

KEY DIFFRENCE
Getting fired is an event specific to you, and is due to something within your control
(work performance, communication, ability to work with the team, ability to learn the
job quickly, attitude, etc.)

Whereas when you’re laid off, the position itself is eliminated, and they do not look to
replace you. A layoff isn’t caused by anything specific you did.
downturn, etc.

1) How would you define the concept of being laid off?

2) How would you define the concept of being fired?
3)Think of an example of why someone would be laid off.
4)Think of an example of why someone would be fired.
