Abstract

Effective communication is crucial for providing quality healthcare services.

However, several factors can hinder effective communication between patients
and Health Information Officers (HIOs). This study aimed to assess the factors that
mitigate effective communication between patients and HIOs. A literature review
was conducted to identify the factors that contribute to ineffective communication
between patients and HIOs. The study found that language barriers, cultural
differences, health literacy, and trust are the major factors that contribute to
ineffective communication between patients and HIOs. The study also found that
ineffective communication can lead to poor health outcomes, including
misdiagnosis, medication errors, and poor adherence to treatment. Based on the
findings of this study, recommendations are proposed to address the factors that
mitigate effective communication. Healthcare providers should develop policies
and procedures to address language barriers and cultural differences, strategies to
improve health literacy among patients, establish trust with their patients, and
further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of different strategies for
enhancing effective communication between patients and HIOs. By addressing
these factors, healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes and enhance the
overall quality of care.
