Differentiation Rules
In the previous lesson, you have encountered the different steps in
finding the derivative of a function. But these are tedious processes when a
given function f is too complex. To simplify these steps, the following
differentiation rules must be used. These rules were developed to find the
derivative of any elementary function.
• (Derivative of a Constant)
dc/dx = 0
Differentiation Rules
4. If y = 8, then y’ = 0
n n̶1
If y = x then dy/dx = nx
Differentiation Rules
4 4-1 3
4. If y = x , then y’ = 4x = 4x
●
Differentiation Rules
2 2-1
4. y = 8x , then dy/dx = 8(2)x
dy/dx = 16x

Problem Set 04
GENERAL INSTRUCTION:
1. Solve all problems.
2. Use only black “gel” pen. Write neatly & clearly.
Type written is allowed.
3. Write your complete solution in a short bond papers.
4. Place / compiled all your solved problem sets in the folder, color
blue (for Section Euclid) and green (Section Einstein).
5. To be submitted on January 10, 2018 (Wednesday). Five (5) points
will be deducted everyday for late submission.

RULE 9: Derivative of Logarithmic Functions
if y = lnx
dy/dx = d (ln x) = dx/x
dy/dx = d (lnx) / dx = 1/x
if u is any function of x,
dy/dx = d (lnu) / dx = 1/u (du/dx)
Differentiation Rules
Example:
1/2
1. Differentiate y = ln (1 + 3x)
1/2 -1/2
Solution: dy/dx = 1 / (1+3x) (1/2) (1+3x) (3)
