MEXICAN NATIONAL

ANTHEM

The lyrics of the anthem allude to Mexican victories in battles,it is about the defense of the
homeland,the virtues of the people who exercise it and the sacrifice that entails.Its verses and
chorus were composed by the Potosí poet Fracisco Gózales Bocanegra in 1853,while his
music,the work of the Spahish composer Jaime Nuno,was composed the following year.

Melody consisted of 10 stanzas;However,in 1855,afther Juan Nepomuceno assumed the


presidency,stanzas IV and VII were banned.It is worth mentioning that the history of the
Anthem dates back to before the Independence of Mexico.In fact,the Granada March or Royal
March is recognized as the first national anthem,which,since 1761,began to be used in
Spain,an well as in its colonies.

Patriotic symbols

The shield displays three symbols of Mexica identity:the cactus,the eagle and the
snake,in reference to the stosy of the pilgrimage from Tenochtitlan,in 1325,and the
eagle devouring a snake alludes to the victory of the Sun over its enemies.

Our National Anthem :is a lyrical poem,which praises the fight to protect national
sovereighty and independence,alluding to the battles waged by Mexicans against
foreign threats.

The colors of the flag guaranteed some ringhts:white represented the catholic
religion;The green represented the independence of Mexico from Spain and the red
the equality and union of Mexicans with the Spanish and the castes.
