BRIDGE SCALE MODEL

DETAILED GUIDELINES:
1. Each team will be given the materials for the bridge construction. The materials are
as follows:
a. 100 Popsicle sticks
b. 1 yarn
c. 3 sheets of bond paper
2. The participants must provide the tools they would need for the bridge construction.
The tools are as follows:
a. Scissors and/or cutters
b. Pens
c. Rulers
3. The teams can build any type and configuration of truss bridges (e.g. Warren, Howe,
Curved-chord truss) with a horizontal driveway (see fig. 1).

4. Bridges shall be made using only the sticks provided. Yarns must be used for joint
connections only. (e.g. pencils and papers must not be used as part of the bridge.)
5. Teams are allowed to request for additional sticks and yarns during the Construction
phase
6. The bridge shall conform with the following dimensions:
a. Span: 50-52 cm
b. Width: 5-6 cm
c. Height: No restriction
Note: the actual length of the bridge must be greater than the span to allow
for its supports to rest on each end of the table (See fig. 2)

7. A 50 cm x 5 cm x 3 cm rectangular wood must be able to fit the bridge’s driveway.

This will be used for the load testing of the bridge. Note: Everything attached to the
bridge is included in the measurements. (e.g. threads, excess uncut sticks)
8. Teams will have a maximum of three (3) hours to construct their bridges.
9. The bridges will be weighed-in after the construction phase.
10. Testing of the bridges will be done by progressive loading. Additional loads must be
placed after each 5-second holding time. The bridge must be able to carry the load
for 5 seconds for the load to be added to the bridge’s strength.
11. The loading will be applied continuously until the bridges collapse.
12. There will three (3) winning teams based on the following awards and their prizes:
a. Bridge with Highest Strength-to-Weight Ratio – PHP 1,000.00
b. Best in Bridge Design and Craftmanship – PHP 500.00

c. Best 3D Bridge Modeler – PHP 500.00
