An Overview of Classical Management Theories

A Review Article

Alireza Nadrifar, Esmat Bandani, Hakimeh Shahryari, "An Overview of Classical Management Theories:
A Review Article", International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), Volume 5 Issue 9, September
2016, pp. 83-86,

Here in the cover page of the research the researcher included the name of the author, the research title,
the topic area, the published institution and the time in which the research was conducted.
ABSTRACT

Undoubtedly, management is an important issue in any organization where predetermined objective

cannot be accomplished without proper management. Management is the art of undertaking different
tasks with the help of other people. There is a jungle of management theories divided into classical,
behavioral and situational theories. The most famous three classical management theories (scientific,
administrative and bureaucratic) are discussed in this article. The science of management theory (in
addition to other factors) is a basic requirement for managers of any organization, so that they can deal
with different challenges in order to present the science, positive and negative aspects of management
theories for managers and management scientists. Common features of classical management theory are
chain of commands, authoritarian management style and behavior prediction. Although these theories are
obsolete, different forms of these theories are implemented in most parts of the world.

Here In the abstract section it is expected from the researcher to provide to give an overview of the study
or the main purpose of the research in clear and easily understandable manner. Again in this part of the
paper it is anticipated from the researcher to provide a concise summary of a research paper or entire
thesis i.e. introduction, statement of the problem, research question, general and specific objective,
significance of the study, scope of the study, the type of research design, population of the study, the
method of data collection, sampling technique, data analysis, conclusions and recommendations of the
study but in our case the researcher failed to do so because of this i criticize on this part of the paper.

INTRODUCTION

In research in the introduction section of the paper the researcher states background of the study,
statement of the problem, research question, objective of the study, significance of the study, scope of the
study and organization of the study. In our case the author provide plenty of information about the
meaning, overview, importance, historical background and role of management in an organization in the
background of the study.

Statement of the problem

In the research work mainly in the statement of the problem section the researcher must provide adequate
and timely information which the author tries to fill the gap in other words the researcher play a gap
filling role while doing the actual paper. Again here the author must state both practical problems that
motivate him to conduct a study on the selected area of study and area of topic and the empirical problem
that exists within previous study which is already conducted in similar area of study and area of topic.
Based on that as I review the article the author neglect to portray or depict practical problems and
empirical gaps that exists within previous study this may laid’s flaws or inadequacies in the research
finding. Since in research identifying the problem considered as half-done of the problem or half of the
solution so because of this i strongly criticize on this aspect of the paper.

Research question

In research questions are raised from problems in the statement of the problem section and the collected
data is analyzed to address those research questions but in the given article the author failed to identify
and state appropriate research questions in clear and understandable manner because of this i critic on this
part of the paper.

Objective of the study

In the actual research work the researcher must state the general and specific objective of the research.
Again here the author neglect to do so and i reproach the paper on this side.

Research design and Methodology

The chapter serves as a road map of how the researcher has approached the study. Thus the purpose of
this chapter is to address the methods that are used in the study. Items addressed in this chapter include
the research design, population and sample, data collection techniques, reliability and validity of the
instruments, scoring technique, data gathering procedure, method of data analysis, reliability and validity
and ethical issue.

Research Design

“Research design is a master plan specifying the methods and procedures for collection and analyzing the
needed information.” (William Zikmund,1988)

“Research design is the plan, structure and strategy of investigation conceived so as to obtain answers to
research questions and to control variance.” (Kerlinger,1986)

In research design the author identify the type of research design based on the research topic.

The design may be descriptive, explanatory and others, if the research topic is cause effect or states
relationship the design must be explanatory so the researcher have the power to manipulate or control the
variables on the contrary if the topic is assessment type the design must be descriptive research design
based on this the researcher didn't mentioned the type of research design that the paper seems look like so
I strongly criticize on this side of the paper.

Article Summery

Nadrifar,Bandani and Shahryari (2015) assessed an overview of classical management theories in

Iran. The objective of the study was to assess the overview of classical management theories to achieve
this objective the researcher used different theoretical literature that supports while doing the actual paper
and reach a valid conclusion.

Critical Reflection

In this part of the review process the reader tries to state the strong and weak side of the
paper.Eventhough the researcher tries to portray the overview, meaning, importance and role of
management from different perspective in clear way there are also limitations as i criticized in each lesson
of the paper.
