INTERMOLECULAR FORCES
 The electrostatic interactions between molecules
 Attractive force between molecules, responsible for keeping matter in solid
or liquid phase.
 Force which keeps molecules together.

4 types of intermolecular forces:

 DISPERSION FORCES
Other terms: Van der Waals and London Dispersion Forces
o The attraction of intermolecular forces between molecules.
o a temporary attractive force that results when the electrons in two
adjacent atoms occupy positions that make the atoms form temporary
dipoles.
o (Induced charges)
 ION-ION FORCES
o (strongest) (Formal charges)
o Interaction between formally charged particles.
 ION-DIPOLE FORCES
o Interaction between an ion and a polar molecule.
o Formal and a partial charge
 DIPOLE-DIPOLE FORCES
o attractive forces between the positive end of one polar molecule and
the negative end of another polar molecule.
o (Partial charges)
