CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction and Background of the Study

Numerous discoveries have surfaced that would greatly help the Earth and its inhabitants.

An invention is a device or process invented or made up of new scientific or technical ideas. One

of the significant factors of this invention is that this is cheaper, easier to use, and can also see

anywhere.

Living in a hot tropical country that lacks adequate power is a problem. One of the

reasons why it is hot in the Philippines is because of its geography. The equator intersects the

Philippines, so they experience much warmer temperatures year-round than the rest of the world

despite the shared elevations. It is due to the equator's near-constant sunlight exposure all year

(Sunny Lin, 2021). Discovering that contemporary fuels dominate home energy use in these

three Filipino cities, traditional fuels continue to represent a considerable fraction of overall

household energy usage.

The transition to more efficient, contemporary fuels has proceeded gradually, in tandem

with rising urbanization and household affluence. The high expense of transitioning to more

efficient fuels and appliances slows the process. Based on historical and present statistics, energy

consumption in urban homes in the Philippines is predicted to climb over the next decade due to

expected population expansion, economic growth, and the worldwide trend toward purchasing

more and larger appliances (Garcia et al., n.d.).

Severe temperatures and heat waves are among individuals' most severe consequences of

climate change. Health difficulties range from severe heat stroke to a general reduction in well-

being caused by lesser symptoms such as headache and weariness. Heat stress has associated
2
BREEZE
with an increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease (Zander et al., 2018). Heat stress

is dangerous to people's health, can damage their well-being and performance, and can lead to

substantial economic losses. There are a lot of urban areas in the town of Bustos. The population

of Bustos grew from 7,072 in 1903 to 77,199 in 2020, an increase of 70,127 people for 117 years

(PhilAtlas, n.d.). The requirement for housing in cities increases along with population growth,

which also impacts the need for electricity. Climate change poses a particular threat to urban

areas. Because of the urban heat island effect, rising temperatures significantly impact the urban

population.

The Philippines needs electricity, especially when summer comes. On the other hand,

power outages during the summer or dry season are not new and frequently linked to forced

plant outages. Bustos, a municipality in Bulacan, Philippines, also experienced a power outage

or electrical shortage. It resulted in sudden power loss and an interruption, especially for the

workers and students now using electric-consuming technology devices. Aguinaldo J. Santos

National High School is one of the schools in the Municipality of Bustos. Due to the hot weather

that students are experiencing, there are demands to have additional electric fans in their rooms.

Considering that Aguinaldo J. Santos National High School has a lot of facilities and rooms, the

school needs more electricity to power many appliances inside the room. Each room is

experiencing many problems; one example is the unpleasant smell, which is why the researchers

chose to create a portable air-cooling purifier as their project.

An air cooler is a device that makes the room cooler and makes people comfortable.

Nevertheless, running these items requires using a power source known as electricity. Electricity

production is ultimately accountable for scorching and humid circumstances. In hot and humid

weather, one of the few demands is to feel at ease and relaxed, and the use of technologies such

as air conditioning, air cooler, and refrigeration for this purpose has grown fast. Nevertheless,
3
BREEZE
using a solar-powered system in this invention will become a more environmentally friendly

device. This paper describes the comfort levels attained by the device for the human body.

Summer and humid circumstances are uncomfortable due to the hot heat and high humidity. As a

result, maintain the thermal comfort conditions. Thermal comfort is affected by the space's

temperature, humidity, and air speed.

The invention of a device or process made up of new scientific and technical ideas has

been a great help to the Earth and its inhabitants. The researchers would like to invent an

invention that makes the room cooler and provides comfort levels for the human body with zero

use of electricity, which is the beneficial, recycled, eco-friendly, zero-electric consumption, or

BREEZE, a portable solar-powered air-cooling purifier. The researchers would like to

investigate the possibility of an affordable and beneficial device using minimally harnessed

energy from recycled materials to resolve the electrical and heat problems of Aguinaldo J. Santos

National High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study would like to determine whether solar energy could be employed to create a

device that would reduce heat and odor problems without electricity in classrooms. To obtain all

the essential knowledge, data, and information, the researchers seek to answer the crucial

questions to answer the following problems.

1. How could this innovation help to reduce the temperature in an area or classroom?

2. Could solar panel have the potential to be sources of alternative energy?

3. What are the possible pros and cons of this invention?

4. Will this device effectively lessen the smell in an area or classroom?

4
BREEZE
Theoretical Framework
A theoretical framework for this quantitative research study on the invention of an air

cooler using portable solar power could be based on the concept of "energy" and "the machine"

theory.

According to the sun energy theory, the compressor regulates the refrigeration process,

according to the sun energy principle. Electricity powers the remaining electrical components

and fans. The air conditioner creates power when sunlight strikes the solar panel. The sun

powers a solar air cooler. As the name says, it draws its energy from the sun. Its operation differs

from a conventional evaporative air cooler, surpassing a solar air conditioner. The sun's solar

energy is converted into chemical energy and stored in a battery. This battery is then used to

power the cooler. Its simple mechanism and low operating costs make it a good choice for

almost everyone. It is especially beneficial in rural places where there is no power.

According to the machine theory, a machine is a combination of parts that can convey

power and do practical work in a regulated manner. An engine is made up of numerous

kinematically linked linkages. A machine is a group of resistive entities (associations or

elements) with successfully restricted relative movements that convert other types of energy into

mechanical energy or transport and change available power to do a specific task. Every machine

is discovered to be made up of a system of pieces (links or elements) linked in such a way that

when one is moved, they all get a motion, the type of which relies on the nature of the

connections.

Scope and Limitation

This research project will focus on developing a solar-powered air-cooling purifier. The

researchers will investigate if recycled solar panel may be utilized more effectively. This

investigation will be conducted in the community of Tibagan in March 2023.

Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis: In creating the solar-powered air-cooling purifier, recycled solar panel

is not alternative raw materials for an innovative device.

Alternative Hypothesis: In creating the solar-powered air-cooling purifier, recycled solar

panel is alternative raw materials for an innovative device.

Significance of the Study

The continuously growing demand for electric consumption every day leads to a need for

more electricity supply, resulting in a scarcity of electricity demand every day. This study aims

to provide a potential alternative solution for the heat and unpleasant smell experienced in a

particular area that helps to reduce high electricity demands. Researchers believe that this

study is significant and will bring great assistance to the following:

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter gives a review of the pertinent literature and research pertinent to the
current study. The literature review aided the researcher in establishing a knowledge of the
factors
included in the study. It also aided in determining the extent to which prior researchers had
investigated this issue, which served as a starting point for the current study. This chapter's
major focus is on the solar-powered air-cooling air freshener.

Air Cooler
According to Peng Xu et al. (2017), this study presents an experimental investigation of a
super-performance vapor pressure air cooler that has achieved a substantially higher energy
efficiency and much-reduced electrical energy use than existing air coolers of the same type by
employing a super-quality wet material layer, innovative heat and mass exchanger, and irregular
water supply scheme. It also includes dedicated system design and construction, thoroughly
planned innovative testing understudies have suggested climatic conditions able to represent the
climates of hot and dry, warm and dry, moderate, warm and humid, and standard research
facility testing conditions, testing outcomes analysis and discussion, and a parallel comparison
with a commercial vapor pressure air cooler.
Nonetheless, there is the possibility of using various temperatures of water at the same
time to conclude the air cooling/heating process, which has demonstrated a sizeable energy-
saving impact in earlier experiments. There is no theoretical approach for efficiently guiding the
continuous use of different energies, particularly natural/waste, for air cooling/heating load
handling. As a result, this research provides a building technique for air cooling/heating
processes based on energy-load grade matching (Zheng & Li, 2021).
Ashwini et al. (2019) describe a self-sustaining air purifier with an air conditioning
system that uses solar energy as its primary power source for effective filtration and cooling.
This paper's suggested equipment may filter indoor contaminants such as dust, tiny particles,
microparticles, smoking, and germs. After purification, the air is chilled to some level to cool the
atmosphere. The water is sent through a water intake and to the cooling unit's mud pot. The
filtered air circulates through the clay pot, cooling the fluid inside. The cooled water is sent
9
BREEZE
through a pump to the Condenser, where the hot water is extracted, and the cold-water flows
through a pipe to the Condenser. The Condenser is an output pipe outlet that eliminates humidity
from the water. Because of its low power consumption, the device is cost-effective and
environmentally benign, as it employs mud pots for cooling rather than compressors.
An air cooler works by chilling fresh air, resulting in substantially improved air quality
where it is used. The environment is also humidified, improving air quality and decreasing the
room's temperature. Water is used to cool air coolers, humidifying the air as it goes through the
cooling. This makes air coolers excellent for arid locations where the natural environment is
often low in humidity and hence easier to operate when it comes to chilling. Moreover, air
coolers are more ecologically friendly than air conditioners since they emit no hazardous
pollutants, provide humidified air, and use less power (Chroma, 2022).
According to Aspiring Youths (2023), air coolers are energy efficient as they consume
less electricity than air conditioners, making them more cost-effective. It does not use ozone-
depleting refrigerants like air conditioners, making them more environmentally friendly. Air
coolers require less maintenance than air conditioners as they do not have complex mechanical
parts or filters that need to be cleaned or replaced. These are typically portable, which makes
them easy to move around and use in different rooms. Air coolers add moisture to the air, which
can benefit people living in dry climates or those with dry skin or respiratory issues.
Air-coolers are frequently used as a cheap and convenient means of cooling;
nevertheless, their principal drawbacks are noise, dampness, smoking, and difficulties regulating
the interior temperature.
Air coolers have a limited cooling capacity and may need help to cool large rooms or
spaces effectively. It requires a constant water supply to work effectively, which can be a
problem in areas with water scarcity. It works best in dry, hot climates and may be less effective
in humid or wet climates. Air coolers can be pretty noisy, which can be disruptive, especially
when trying to sleep or work. Furthermore, they take up more space than window-mounted air
conditioners and are less easily installed in tight spaces (Aspire Youths, 2023).
An article entitled "8 Disadvantages of using Air Cooler" (2023) stated that air coolers
fail to work in poor ventilation as time passes by; through evaporation, the humidity levels rise
in the room. Moreover, If the room is closed or the ventilation is poor, or, say, the air circulation
between the room and the outside environment is poor. The air's humidity will reach peak levels,
10
BREEZE
after which the water droplets will find it challenging to change into gas, or evaporation will
decline.

Heat
The transition to renewable energy sources is critical for avoiding the worldwide
implications of climate change. This study investigates a renewable energy transition pathway
for the Philippines. A linear optimization method is used to conduct a transition analysis from
2015 to 2050 using high temporal and geographical resolution data. According to the findings
of this study, an entirely fossil-free energy supply in 2050 is theoretically feasible, with costs
comparable to a 2015 energy system and zero emissions of greenhouse gases. During the shift,
solar power plants and batteries as storage technologies constitute the foundation of the power
system. Heat pumps, electrical power heating, and solar thermal electricity would provide heat,
while direct power and synthetic fuels would meet the transportation sector's energy demands.
The findings suggest that indigenous power sources in the Philippines might fuel demand from
various energy sectors, resulting in a variety of socioeconomic advantages (Gulagi et al., 2021).
Ronaldo et al., (2020) stated that over fifty percent of the world's population now lives in
cities, which are particularly vulnerable to the combined impacts of urban heat islands and heat
rises caused by climate change. We assessed the present heat risk to health in 139 Philippine
cities, which account for roughly 40% of the country's total population, using remotely sensed
temperature at the surface data and social-ecological measurements, focusing on the dry and hot
summer months, and applying the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change risk framework.
Metro Manila has cities at extremely or extremely high risk due to high levels of heat danger
and exposure. The most prone cities, on the other hand, are primarily located outside of the
national capital region, where sensitivity is greater and the capacity to cope and adapt is lower.
Cities with high heat susceptibility and exposure should be prioritized in adaptation. Our
findings will help with identifying risk factors in the Philippines as well as clarifying city-level
heat health
concerns in Asia-Pacific developing areas.
11
BREEZE
Utilizing Solar Energy

The potential benefits of using nonpolluting solar energy on the ground are widely
established. The straightforward procedure, which avoids the Carnot efficiency restrictions of
heat engines, is one of the most promising techniques for reaching the needed high solar-
electrical conversion efficiency. Solar energy is the most ecologically friendly and pure energy
source accessible. In recent years, the usage of solar energy has advanced dramatically. Solar
energy collectors are specialized heat exchangers that convert solar radiation energy into
transport medium internal energy (Jawaid & NazirJunejo, 2016).
According to an article called Constellation (2020), solar energy is environmentally
friendly. It emits no carbon or other high-temperature "greenhouse" gases. It eliminates the harm
done to the environment by mining or drilling for energy sources. Additionally, unlike power
plants that use steam turbines to create electricity, solar energy consumes little to no water. A
solar system can assist in lessening dependency on the grid while also saving money on power
costs. Some home solar energy system owners may have extra electricity that they may sell to
the utility. They are simple to maintain since they are no mechanical devices that wear out over
time. Maintain them clean and in good physical shape to ensure they continue to function
correctly.
Solar energy decreased reliance on foreign oil and other fuels. Every day of the year,
renewable clean energy is accessible; even cloudy days provide some electricity. Solar energy
may be used to heat water and powerhouses, buildings, and even automobiles. It is safer than
standard electric current. Because efficiency is constantly improving, the precise size of
accessible solar today will be more efficient tomorrow (SEPCO, 2013).
According to Ibrahim Dincer, solving today's environmental concerns necessitates long-
term prospective initiatives for sustainable development. Renewable sources of energy appear to
be one of the most effective and efficient alternatives in this respect. That is why renewable
energy and environmentally friendly growth are inextricably linked. This study thoroughly
discusses anticipated patterns of future energy consumption and the resulting environmental
implications. Potential answers to existing environmental challenges, as well as renewable
energy technologies, are also identified. Practical instances are used to demonstrate the
relationships between renewable energy and environmentally friendly growth, and an exemplary
example is provided.
12
BREEZE
A study of Dolf Gielen et al. (2019), “The role of renewable energy in the global energy
transformation”, demonstrates tremendous innovation that is facilitating the continued shift
through lowering costs of renewable energy and enabling technologies such as batteries. Along
with new legislative imperatives, innovation accelerates the energy transformation. Because
technological advancements are permanent, they lower the likelihood of policy volatility. The
advancement of solar and wind technologies is a perfect illustration of how technology policy
may guide the future in a specific direction. According to this study, renewable energy may
increase its proportion of total primary energy production from 15% in 2015 to 63% in 2050.
Such renewables development, along with increased energy efficiency, may generate 94% of the
carbon reductions required to keep inside the Paris Climate Agreement's boundaries. While
actual amounts differ, current scenario models agree that renewable energy and energy
efficiency are the most realistic ways to address climate change.
The role of renewable energy (wind, solar, wave, and biomass) in developing sustainable
development plans. Such methods generally include three primary technical changes: reducing
energy consumption on the demand side, efficiency gains in energy production, and the
substitution of fossil fuels with diverse renewable energy sources. As a result, large-scale solar
power implementation strategies must incorporate methods for incorporating renewable sources
into coherent energy systems impacted by energy efficiency and savings initiatives. Based on the
instance of Denmark, this article analyzes the challenges and opportunities of transitioning from
current energy systems to 100% renewable energy systems. The conclusion that can be drawn is
that such growth is feasible. Renewable energy sources are accessible, and if additional technical
advancements in the energy system are made, an energy system based on renewable sources can
be formed. Particularly important are transportation sector conversion technologies and the
deployment of flexible energy system technology (Lund, 2017).
Therefore, air coolers are efficient. It may have its drawbacks; it still has a lot of benefits.
Using solar panel as renewable energy contributes significantly to the improvement of the air
quality of a community. In addition, it is environmentally-friendly.

METHODOLOGY
The study's methodology is described by the researchers in this chapter. This study

employed an experimental process. The manipulation of conditions for the goal of study is a

component of the experimental process of research. The methods covered steps including

preparation of material, the experimental process, hypothesis testing, and data analysis. The

process was used in this study to evaluate the product's ability to repel people.

17
BREEZE
Gathering the Materials: The researchers gathered some of the materials in junk shop like fan,

recycled air cooler body frame, water reservoir. While the solar panel was recycled material

that the researchers find at their homes. And the rest of the materials like filter, motor, screws,

sand

paper and paint were new and bought from hardware.

Cleaning the Recycled Materials: recycled materials need to be cleaned before use to

remove any contaminants or impurities that may have accumulated during the recycling

process or

previous use. This ensures the quality and safety of the product. In the case of air-cooling

purifiers, the recycled material must be free from any dust, dirt, or other pollutants that could

affect the effectiveness of the purifier and impact the air quality in the surrounding environment.

Assembling the Materials: The researchers start assembling the materials to move forward with

the project. The researchers connect the USB cable to the circuit board, then connect the battery
18
BREEZE
to it as well. The researchers drilled a tiny hole for the USB cable to be inserted. The researcher
19
BREEZE
first checked if the prototype was working by connecting the USB cable to an adapter charger.

After the researchers observed if the battery and the cable were working, they tried to connect

the USB cable to the solar panel, and it was working. Then, after checking that the buttons were

all working, they assembled each part together. They screwed the parts of the air coolers’ body

frames together, and then, through the use of solder, glue sticks, and glue guns, the

researchers attached the wires to the circuit board. The researchers put all the wires inside and

made them hidden. Lastly, they checked if it was screwed well and if the prototype was well

fixed.

Decorating the Product: The researchers decorate their prototype to make it more attractive

and appealing to eyes. A visually appealing and well-designed product often attract more

attention. It can also give potential users a better understanding of how products works and its

features.
20
BREEZE
The researchers haven’t had difficulty finding the materials needed to develop the

prototype. The researchers cleaned each material to make the work neater and easier. After the

cleaning process, the researchers start to assemble the parts. The researchers attached a USB

cable and battery to the circuit board as well. Lastly, the researchers decorated the prototype by

painting it and making a fabric casing and strap to make it portable and pleasing to the eye.

Hypothesis Testing
The testing that the researchers conducted was to evaluate the functionality, reliability,

and durability of the prototype. Through the testing that was conducted by the researchers, the

functionality of the prototype is guaranteed. It has been proven that the prototype can lower the

air’s temperature, making it cooler. It can’t change the temperature of a whole room, but it can

make the air feel cooler to an individual since it is made to tackle a person or two. The

Philippines is a tropical country, and it is hot there. With the help of this prototype, it can

somehow ease the heat, making it reliable. Whereas the researchers used recycled materials, the

cost was cheaper. The researchers used a plastic frame due to its durability. The durability of

plastic comes from the long molecule chains that create it. They ensure that the polymer is strong

and capable of withstanding wear and tear while remaining flexible enough to handle a hit

(Miller Plastics, 2023). Also, it is better than a metal frame that is fragile from substances such

as water and often change of weather or climate because metal can be easily rusted and be

dented.

After every test that was conducted by the researchers, they therefore concluded that the quality

of the prototype was good.

21
BREEZE
Statistical Treatment of Data
A descriptive analysis is utilized by the researchers as a systematic method for presenting

brief explanations of the sample and its measures, which allowed them to undertake their study,

which entailed analyzing and comprehending the properties of a certain dataset. A summary of

the solar-powered air cooler with purifier sample used in the experiment was also given by the

researchers using this method.

Requirement Documentation
The researchers aimed to develop solar-powered air coolers with purifiers that are more

energy-efficient, reduce air pollution, and save on energy bills. Solar energy is a renewable

energy source that does not produce harmful emissions, making it a more sustainable option.

The study’s main objective was to present a systematic way for making solar-powered air

coolers with air purifiers, accompanied by thorough and brief data that might help anyone

looking to

incorporate this approach into their production process. The following materials were used in the

production, which will affect the price:

power, which can provide a comfortable and clean air environment to individuals, particularly

those in remote areas without access to electricity. The prototype unit was successfully designed

and constructed, and its functionality was tested using various parameters.

First trial: The results of the performance tests showed that the portable solar-powered air cooler

and purifier have the ability to cool down its surroundings. The fan speed and airflow rate were

regulated by varying the power input from the solar panels, and the duration of purification was

subject to the size of the filter.

Second trial: The user testing conducted on the prototype unit revealed that it is highly portable,

lightweight, and user-friendly. Users were able to operate the device with ease, switch between

cooling and purifying modes effortlessly, and control the fan speed according to their

preferences.

The researcher found the device to effectively reduce air pollutants and temperature in

enclosed spaces using solar power. In a controlled laboratory experiment, the researchers found a

statistically significant reduction in particulate matter and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

after running the device for a period of time. Additionally, the device was able to cool the air,

which could have practical applications in hot and humid climates. The researchers also found

that the device was portable and easy to use, making it a promising solution for indoor air quality

and comfort in developing countries and disaster relief situations. Further studies could

investigate the long-term durability and effectiveness of the device in real-world settings.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion

After the experiment, the researchers, therefore, concluded that utilizing recycled

materials to create a beneficial product is possible. The experiment that the researchers

accomplished, was successful. Solar-powered air coolers with purifiers are an innovative

solution to provide cool and clean air in areas with limited access to electricity. The researchers

use solar panels to generate power, which is then used to run a fan and purifier to clean and cool

the air. The key benefits of solar-powered air coolers with purifiers are their low operating cost,

portability, and ease of use.

With all things investigated, solar-powered air coolers with purifiers are a potential

option for supplying cool, clean air in places with poor access to energy. These devices may

become an even more useful and affordable replacement for conventional air conditioning

systems with additional technological advancements.

Recommendations

The result of this study as well as the limitations it encountered warrant a different

approach and future research. As such the researchers suggest the following recommendations:

1. Do an air cooler with sensor. In this way the air cooler will be more efficient when in

need. The researchers fail to do this because of limited knowledge and time in doing this.
27
BREEZE
2. Use energy-efficient components. In addition to increasing the size of the solar

panel, you can also improve the energy efficiency of the air cooler and purifier

components. Look for components with high Energy Star ratings, which indicate that

they use less energy than standard models.

3. Consider adding a remote-control feature. A remote-control feature can make it easier

to operate the air cooler and purifier from a distance. This can be especially helpful if

the device is being used in a large room or outdoor area.

4. Include a filter replacement indicator. Adding a filter replacement indicator can help

ensure that the air purifier continues to operate effectively. This feature will alert the

user when it is time to replace the filter, ensuring that the device continues to provide

clean air.

5. Attach the solar panel in the air cooler. The researchers believe that it will make it

more portable and less of a hustle when the air cooler’s energy run out.
