On July 14, NEH announced that Andrew Delbanco, the Alexander Hamilton
Professor of American Studies at Columbia University, president of the Teagle
Foundation, and 2011 National Humanities Medalist, will deliver the 2022 Jefferson
Lecture in the Humanities. The Jefferson Lecture is the highest honor the federal
government bestows for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities and
this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the lecture series.
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the lecture will return as a live in-person
event. Delbanco will deliver his lecture, The Question of Reparations: Our Past, Our
Present, Our Future, on October 19, 2022, in Washington, D.C. In his remarks,
Delbanco will address reparations for slavery in the United States, using history,
philosophy, and literature to examine a wide range of perspectives on the debate.
The lecture is free and open to the public and will stream online at neh.gov. Tickets
will be available in mid-September. Stay tuned for more details.

This month NEH was named the second-best place to work among small
federal agencies, according to a new Best Places to Work survey released by the
nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service and global management firm
Boston Consulting Group. The rankings measure employee engagement and
satisfaction, as well as metrics including management, performance, and work-life
balance.
NEH scored a record 84.9 points, an all-time high for the agency and an increase of
more than 20 points over NEHs 2020 score (64.4). In a year of unprecedented
change, NEH was able to adapt and evolve, said NEH Chair Lowe. That wouldnt
have been possible without the steadfast leadership, expert stewardship, and swift
COVID-19 response of our staff here at NEH.

I think I mentioned this program previously at a Leadership Team meeting. State Parks is going to issue
parks passes for checkout to local libraries. Please review the information below and let me know if you
have any questions.

Good afternoon,
My name is Dominique Cupa, and I am the Administrative Assistant IV for Nevada State Parks at our
main office in Carson City. I am reaching out to you today to inform you of our intent to begin a program
with public libraries throughout the state, fully funded by Nevada State Parks’ Gift Shop Grant. Our goal
for this program is to provide communities access to their nearest adventure at one of our parks and
hope to stem collaboration between your library and its local Nevada State Park(s). Currently there is
not an official name or logo for the program.
Towards the end of this year, we will be issuing each public library 2 day-use passes that are specifically
for this program along with digital assets for any advertisement needs. Each pass will be valid from
January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. They can be checked out for a one-week period at a time and are
valid for day-use only, but patrons visiting our parks can pay the difference for any additional fees that
may be applicable if they choose to camp or boat with us. This pass will be displayed in one’s vehicle
upon entry to any of park and allow free access for this vehicle only with a maximum capacity of eight
people.
These passes will be physical placards that will need to be checked out and returned via your library’s
normal procedures. I am personally curious as to how these operations function in your library and hope
you will let me know the procedures your library is taking.
We will also be relying on the library to hold patrons responsible for losing the pass or returning it late. If
a pass is lost or stolen, you can contact me for an additional pass. But at the moment, we are hoping to
keep a somewhat limited number of passes in circulation. Further, we are hopeful that each library will
provide any data they possibly can to us towards the end of 2023 to determine the success of the
program.
I am open to any suggestions or comments that you may have in regard to the program, so please reach
out to me as we continue to formulate the program further. Please also let me know if this program is
something that your library is not interested in participating in. I am hoping to establish a main contact
with each library, so if that person is not you please have your designated library representative reach
out to me to coordinate with in the future.

Subject: Monkeypox is now in Washoe County
By Kristen Hackbarth
Washoe County Health District officials on Thursday reported the first probable
case of monkeypox in the region. The case is in a man in his 20s who had recently
traveled domestically and is isolating at home.
“This is something that we’re not surprised to have occurring,” District Health Officer
Kevin Dick said during a press briefing. “We want to remind everyone to be vigilant
and be looking for symptoms of monkeypox. If you do have symptoms, talk to your
doctor.”
No other cases have been reported in Washoe County, but health officials are
investigating the probable case and conducting contact tracing to determine if there
may be others who have the virus.

Specimens from the probable case have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) for confirmation of monkeypox, according to WCHD
epidemiologist Nancy Diao.
Monkeypox is in the same virus family as smallpox, but Diao said the current strain
being seen is rarely fatal. What does have health officials concerned, she said, is that it
is spreading in countries where it is not normally seen.

Mr. Scott,
Everyday I pray for someone. Today, I will pray for you: Regarding your support for Drag Queen Story
Time.
Its one thing for “when we recognize, value, and embrace diversity, we are recognizing, valuing, and
embracing the uniqueness of each individual,” and its certainly another issue to put children in harms
way when adults are selfish. There is no cultural competence in that fact.
Please for the sanity of the children, stop and cancel the Drag Queen Story Time at the library. I just
learned about this event and am shocked that this is even happening here in my town or anywhere for
that matter. Do you have any idea what mental damage this is going to do to children?? Why are you
allowing for this event?
Children are precious: Whom deserve to live life having fun without being harmed because of selfish
adults.
Again, please stop and cancel the Drag Queen Story Time, it’s the right thing to do. --→ for the children.
I will pray for you to stop and cancel the Drag Queen Story Time…. and ask God to forgive you.

This is a natural transition. Our expertise is in working with top scholars to provide beautiful,
curated collections of short, expert-written overviews on important subjects. You'll find some
of new titles available now at our website, and our first group of Very Very Short Introductions
is in the works.
In addition, we're continually pleased by the relevance of our backlist. Not only have we
covered China's relations with the US, EU, and Russia, but also global food security and
shipping, and of course every aspect of energy and climate change. Even our backlist titles on
homelessness are newly relevant. For research or teaching on the Afghanistan withdrawal,
there is no better reference than Patterns of Global Terrorism, a masterful annotated
collection. “Talk about ‘glocal’ - it takes a splendid little Berkshire Publishing house to do what

This illustrated edition of The
Autobiography of W. E. B. Du Bois is the
first to be arranged and dedicated in
accordance with Du Bois’s manuscript
notes. It begins with these words: "I was
born by a golden river and in the shadow of
two great hills, five years after the
Emancipation Proclamation which began
the freeing of American Negro Slaves." Du
Bois was born in the town where Berkshire

autobiography tells the story of a little boy,
the only Black boy in his school, who
became the first African American PhD at
Harvard, an educator, editor, and activist,
and a writer of expressive, lyrical, and
accessible prose. In this book, he explains
why he chose to become a Communist.
While the Communism he praised did not
turn out to offer the utopia so many hoped
for, the problems he identified are still with
us. His reasoning will resonant with modern
readers who share his frustration with the
continued inequities in our society.

Hello team!
Just forwarding this info about our staging zone along to all of you. Also, I created a teams chat for us so
please look there for the most latest updates.
Parade tips:
• Dress for the heat (bring sunglasses, wear shorts or skirts or something heat friendly.)
• Wear sunscreen.
• Wear comfortable walking shoes.
• Bring a small or lightweight backpack you can march with if you'd like. You can keep make up,
water bottles, keys, wallets etc. in there.
• Be as ready as possible when you arrive at 9 am. I will have costume items ready for us to put on.
You can choose what you are comfortable wearing.
• I will need volunteers for the following:
o 2 banner carriers (typically Jeff is one of them, Maya has volunteered to be our second!)
o 4 cart pushers (Samantha, ......?)
o Wavers/bubble people (I have bubbles for you)
o I'll be the flag twirler/parade leader at the front
o John will be the van driver behind us
We will need to arrive at RN promptly at 9 am and get ready asap. It should only take us about 18
minutes or so to walk to our staging area. If anyone would prefer to drive please feel free to park
somewhere closer to 6th and Sierra. We can have John transport the carts for us in the courier van. YAY!
That will save us a lot of time.
Please use chat for questions and to see the most up to date info.
Thanks everyone!

Subject: New State Parks Library Program

I am a citizen of Reno and feel I must comment on the Drag Queen Story
Time at the tax payers’ county library. While I support the LGBQT
community, I do not support this. The library exists to give people a
place for reading books, furthering their education and exploring. Sex
education is not the library’s job. I know there are story times for the
young, which has always been enjoyable. But having drag queens read
to our young serves no purpose other than to confuse the young.
Children do not need this kind of information or role models. They are
very accepting of people hence this program is unnecessary. Leave them
alone with matters related to sexuality. There is plenty of time down the
road where it would be more appropriate to give them this information.
Once their innocence is gone, they can never recover that. Please allow
children to just be children.
Thank you,
Laurie Agnew

Mr. Scott,
Please tell me exactly how many "families" prioritized having Drag
Queen Story Hours on your survey and how many actually watched the
virtual story hours during the Covid lockdown? I have nothing against
others life choices, but as I said, our children should not be subjected to
adult entertainment and after looking at the video link you provided,
that is exactly what it was. It was not a welcoming environment to me,

Dear Trustees,
Since the board has chosen not to meet
this month, I am sending my comments
via email to you.
Adult entertainment is for adults. The
reinstatement of Drag Queen Story
Hour this summer is a major affront to
this common sense. When I lived in San
Francisco many years ago, the
Tenderloin District was famous for its
Drag Queen shows, but children were
not allowed and any good parent would
not even consider attending such "adult
entertainment" with their children. So
why did 2 libraries in Washoe Co. have
such adult entertainment for our
youngest children? I feel this is more
than just unwise, it is tantamount to
child abuse!
Please do not tell me it is to make our
children more "inclusive", as there are
far better ways to do that, which I am
sure you are aware.
Sincerely,
Darla Lee

Please tell me exactly how many "families" prioritized having Drag
Queen Story Hours on your survey and how many actually watched the
virtual story hours during the Covid lockdown? I have nothing against

We had four storytimes at the end of June. We typically schedule these events during Pride Month.
During our 2021 Strategic Planning celebrating our diverse community was set as a high priority by our
patrons. Drag Queen Storytime is a popular program that is celebrated in the community along with
other Pride events in June and events like the Northern Nevada Pride Parade. It is in line with our
community values based on both our survey and forum responses and the large amount of Pride events
in Washoe County.
I associate Christmas themed events with Christ. We provide more Santa Storytime than any other
themed event along with decorations and as I mentioned Christian themed books that can be found in
the library.

How many times a year do you hold these Drag Queen events?
Where in your charter does it give you authority to promote lifestyles contrary to
6000 years of traditional definitions of human beings?
Holding Santa events is nothing on par with having a storyteller whose culture is
"Jesus loves you" as a life philosophy.

Mr. Scott,
Everyday I pray for someone.
Ms. Lee,

I cannot believe that conditions exist that I am forced to provide comments to you regarding this
disgusting and perverted drag queen hour. This is child endangerment disguised as tolerance and
inclusion. You and all that consider this must be held accountable for exposing the children of Washoe

certainly will.

I am all for diversity just not perversity. This kind of show belongs in a Gay club for
adults not children. The county library should not be sponsoring programs that
are inappropriate for children with taxpayer money. Parents who want their
children exposed to this sort of thing can pay for it someplace else. Half the
country is totally opposed to the radical LGBTQIA agenda, which does not make
us anti-gay. And by the way, it is the half that pays all the taxes in our country. I
suggest you rethink your thinking. It is offensive to many in the community. JM

Drag Queen Events at Libraries. Ridiculous. Another reason aside from the
Internet to stop supporting Libraries with taxpayer money. You have lost your
way and not about being anti-Gay just about be anti-stupid. JM

Subject: Regarding your support for Drag Queen Story Time
Mr. Scott,
Everyday I pray for someone.
Dear Mr. Scott, I find it so interesting that your focus and energy is so directed to the LGBTQIA+
community and in total disregard to the rest (and greater majority) of the community the Washoe
County Library System serves. Ms. Stenehjem gave you a perfect opportunity to enlarge your embracing
diversity and development of cultural competence to our children and family units. I’m not seeing
anywhere that firefighters, peace officers, nurses, teachers, pastors and others who are making our
community a better place to live are given a platform at WCLS to further open the minds of young
children and family members!
Please keep me, and the community at large, informed when Washoe County Library System is TRULY
INCLUSIVE and invites the firefighters, peace officers, nurses, teachers, pastors and others who are
making our community a better place to live. I will certainly work to sure you have a group larger than
800 families enthusiastically attending.

Hi Jeff,
I am not against Drag Queen entertainment for adults - but I am against them “entertaining” our young
children. We do not need to “normalize” adult men who want to dress up as flamboyant women to our
under-age youth.
Instead, I would like to see the heroes of our community reading to our children: firefighters, peace
officers, nurses, teachers, pastors and others who are making our community a better place to live.

Dear Mr Scott,
The fact the men dress up as women, is related to sex. If this was merely a story time, then there
would be absolutely no need for them to attend in drag outfits. You are most wrong in saying this
has nothing to do with sex. These men are role modeling their sexual preference. Do not think
people don't see this nor understand? To your assertion of community support, this program is
not supported by the entire community, but a small group within our community. I am not
against drag queens or anyone in the LGBTQ community. I am against introducing anything
related to sexual preference/identity/content to young children. And yes, drag queens introduce
this to children by their mere appearance. The fact that they dress up for the kids clearly
demonstrates this, otherwise why the outfits? Why not have adults in more traditional attire read
to the kids? When professionals go to schools for career day, they dress in their professional
attire, i. e. fireman, police officers, doctors, etc. Why? To make an impact.
Are you aware that the LGBQT is only 5% of the population? So why do their concerns override
the other 95%? I am certainly not content to stand by while you and others decide what is and is
not appropriate for our children. If you will not listen to ALL members of the community, then I
will continue to contact official who can help us.

Well Jeff, this is NOT San Francisco and the ratio of LGBTQIAA+ in San Francisco is massively larger than
it is in Washoe County. I find it a little funny that you think because it was done in CA. it should be done
here. Really?! But the bottom line is: It was NOT requested by Washoe County citizens. Interesting.
San Francisco is a mess!!!! I hope I don’t live to see Reno/Sparks become San Francisco. I have a library
card, so does my husband, but we don’t support this program. Your implication that just because 80% of
Washoe County has a library card, they are in favor of the Drag Queen Story Time program is ludicrous.
Don’t treat me like I’m an idiot. I know you can’t accommodate 464,000 people for a single event, but
do you really think you should be celebrating accommodating 4/10 % of your clients? I know that Las
Vegas has a population of about 4.4% gays and I know that Reno is about 4th in the state in percentage
of gays. So just for the sake of conversation, let’s say there are 2% LGBTQIAA+ in Washoe County. That’s
about 9,000. So you are trying to convince me that it is more important to serve that 9,000 than the
remaining 455K? The reality is that most children will never meet a drag queen in their ENTIRE lives. I
think you chose a very poor representative of the LGBTQIAA+ community.
You didn’t respond about asking other representatives of the LGBTQIAA+ community to participate in
your program, can I assume that you didn’t do that? Those that are trying to live a normal life and reside
happily with everyone they come in contact with – did you ask them what they think of your portrayal of
their life style? I think not.
I’m not going to continue this conversation because I think you don’t really want to go down this road.
All I’m saying is that when you talk about programs for Washoe County in the future, I really hope you
will be more swayed by your clients (the citizens of Washoe County) than by San Francisco, CA. There
are many ways that are way more respectful of the LGBTQIAA+ Community to show support for them
and their life style.
Thank you for responding to my emails. I really appreciate that you took the time. I must say that I’m
not sure you are really open minded about this subject and are probably not really interested in looking
at the Drag Queen Project from the perspective of a non-LGBTQIAA+ person or even a more
conservative LGBTQIAA+ person. Thank you again and have a good week.
Lorraine Conyac
Ms. Conyac,
Drag Queen Storytime has its origins in the LGBTQ community. It came from communities in San
Francisco that expressed a desire to have more LGBTQ events for children.
We would not have the capacity to host a program where 464,000 people showed up (Washoe County
Population). However, 80% of Washoe County residents own a library card. Eight hundred families are
by far the highest attended program we have ever had. That would seem to suggest the community
supports it. We have had maybe 15 people express displeasure in the program; most do not live in
Washoe County.
To summarize, the program originates in the gay community, Washoe County has a very high library
card rate, and these programs are well attended. This seems like a program that is worth continuing. No
one is forced to go to these programs. However, a lot of people do attend this program and support it.
Sincerely,
Jeff

Well, that was a very nice canned response to my email. But if you had read what I wrote, you would
know that I said nothing about disenfranchising the LGBTQIAA+ community or devaluing them in any
way. Embracing diversity does not include bringing a drag queen into the lives of children before they
are ready to understand what they are being exposed to by a public run institution.
I have many friends in the LGBTQIAA+ community and they do NOT dress like a clown and would be
embarrassed to have anyone portray them in that way. You have taken the most outrageous example
and are trying to make an impressionable child think that example represents the LGBTQIAA+
community?? It is a disservice and it is disgusting that you would demean a whole community of people
in that way.
There is a huge difference between being “a proud supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and
continue….. to be an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone” and bringing in a drag queen for story
time. Certainly, anyone coming into the library should be treated with respect, which is a much better
interpretation of the mission of the American Library Association.
Do you bring in the successful LGBTQIAA+ business man or woman for story time? Do you bring in the
LGBTQIAA+ homeless person to tell their story? Do you bring in marginalized LGBTQIAA+ to tell their
story? Do you bring in the successful drag queen that dresses normally when they are not on stage and
let them tell you their story? Do you bring in the LGBTQIAA+ drug addict to tell their story? I’m sure the
answer is a resounding “NO!” If you support the LGBTQIAA+, shouldn’t you be representing the majority
of that community in your efforts??
So you are not even attempting to really educate the children about what that choice can mean in their
lives and just what they should value and embrace in the diversity of others. No, you bring in a clown
that makes the kids laugh and think that the life of a drag queen is all roses, flashy dressing, and
clownish makeup.
There are 212,930 household in Washoe County and you (so proudly) touch the households of 800 (less
than 4/10 of a %) of the household population with your LGBTQIAA+ outreach. Hmmm, maybe you
should try to include MORE of the population you are supposed to be serving when you sponsor story
telling time! Maybe your clients, the people of Washoe County, are trying to tell you something by not
showing up for this nonsense?
Other than your canned response (which really didn’t respond to my email at all), you really have not
told me one reason that pertains to the common sense reason for bringing a drag queen to the library
for story time. For instance, how many families in Washoe County asked for that service, either before
you started it, or after? How many families have come to the County and said, “Wow! We really
appreciate you bringing a drag queen to library story times!” How much money was spent to satisfy less
than 4/10 of a percent of the community you serve. How many people have complained about this
effort of yours to value and support the LGBTQIAA+ community? How about some real information.

My husband and I were in the Spanish Springs library recently and saw the sign for the Drag Queen Story
time. WHAT!!!! There is NO good reason to expose children to that person!!! “She” looked like a clown.
You really believe that person has something useful to pass on to children? My husband talked to the
Director (or whatever he is) and he was insolent, non-responsive and arrogant. What a jerk!!!!
It’s OK to look like a clown all the time? It’s OK to have no self-respect? It’s OK to make a mockery of
yourself? That’s the message I got from the flyer about this person. And then to add insult to injury, the
staff of the library dressed up to imitate a person in drag like it was all a big party!!!
My taxes go to pay for the library and the staff and I’m angry that the library chooses to ignore the fact
that reality is NOT dressing like a clown. Young people should be encouraged to have self-respect. Being
a drag queen is not the profession that most parents want for their children. Be tolerant of that
profession, sure. Be understanding of that profession, sure. But make it sound and look like a party
every day, NO, NO, NO. It’s not a party. It’s a hard way to make a living and it’s not the norm and very
often people in drag are unhappy and spend a lifetime trying to fit in.
As a public service, which is what the library is, it should promote the reality of the general public (that
pays their salary), because that is the world our children must make their way in as they mature.
I can assure you that I will be as vocal as I can be against any member of the library Board or staff that
promotes such a foolish and harmful activity in our local libraries.

I am a citizen of Reno and feel I must comment on the Drag Queen Story Time at the tax
payers’ county library. While I support the LGBQT community, I do not support this. The
library exists to give people a place for reading books, furthering their education and
exploring. Sex education is not the library’s job. I know there are story times for the
young, which has always been enjoyable. But having drag queens read to our young
serves no purpose other than to confuse the young. Children do not need this kind of
information or role models. They are very accepting of people hence this program is
unnecessary. Leave them alone with matters related to sexuality. There is plenty of time
down the road where it would be more appropriate to give them this information. Once
their innocence is gone, they can never recover that. Please allow children to just be
children.

diversity and develop cultural competence. According to the American Library
Association’s Library Bill of Rights, “when we recognize, value, and embrace diversity,
we are recognizing, valuing, and embracing the uniqueness of each individual.”
In 2019, over 800 families attended this popular event, with many more watching the
virtual version online in 2020 and 2021. We hope that events like these will encourage
inclusivity within our community.
Washoe County Library is a proud supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and continues
to be an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone.
We have photos and videos from previous events so that you can get a good idea of the
storytime. We have had this storytime virtually the last two years:

Dear Mr Scott,
I am a citizen of Reno and feel I must comment on the Drag Queen Story Time at the tax
payers’ county library.
Please allow children to just be
children.
Thank you,
Laurie Agnew

Subject: RE: Drag Queen Story Time
Ms. Conyac,
Drag Queen Storytime has its origins in the LGBTQ community.

Hi Jeff,
I am not against Drag Queen entertainment for adults - but I am against them “entertaining” our young
children. We do not need to “normalize” adult men who want to dress up as flamboyant women to our
under-age youth.
Instead, I would like to see the heroes of our community reading to our children: firefighters, peace
officers, nurses, teachers, pastors and others who are making our community a better place to live.

As a grandparent, I’m asking you to please cancel all drag queen story hours.
Reading aloud to children is essential to develop their language skills, imaginations, and logical thinking
processes. It is helpful to children of all backgrounds and abilities to discover the pleasures of reading
and to help set them on the road to becoming lifelong readers. This is especially true if they don’t have
adults in the home that actively read nor read aloud appropriate stories to them.
The distraction of drag queens and other “clowns” as readers to children diminishes the content of the
story and their listening development.
Support the literary development of our children; do not support adult groomers.

Mr. Scott,
Please tell me exactly how many "families" prioritized having Drag Queen Story Hours on your survey
and how many actually watched the virtual story hours during the Covid lockdown? I have nothing
against others life choices, but as I said, our children should not be subjected to adult entertainment and
after looking at the video link you provided, that is exactly what it was. It was not a welcoming
environment to me, and like you, I am allowed to have my opinion.

Dear Trustees,
Since the board has chosen not to meet this month, I am sending my
comments via email to you.
Adult entertainment is for adults. The reinstatement of Drag Queen
Story Hour this summer is a major affront to this common sense. When I
lived in San Francisco many years ago, the Tenderloin District was
famous for its Drag Queen shows, but children were not allowed and
any good parent would not even consider attending such "adult
entertainment" with their children. So why did 2 libraries in Washoe Co.
have such adult entertainment for our youngest children? I feel this is
more than just unwise, it is tantamount to child abuse!
Please do not tell me it is to make our children more "inclusive", as
there are far better ways to do that, which I am sure you are aware.
Sincerely,
Darla Lee

Having a Drag Queen Story Hour is not grooming. Storytimes like these create a diverse

performed our Strategic Plan Forums and survey in August 2021. Our community wants

I am greatly disturbed that you would continue the Drag Queen Story Time for children. This is not an appropriate
subject for young children to be learning about through a public agency such as the library. Exposure to this
lifestyle will come and it should be up to the parents to explain the ramifications of this not, a public library.

To: Members of the Library Board

While I heartily approve of encouraging reading by children I find reading to littles by people dressed in drag totally
inappropriate. I have nothing against those who choose to entertain adults in drag but children do not have the world
experience to understand the concept.
Please discontinue the practice in our local libraries for which I pay taxes.

County to nothing more than porn. If the people of this County do not hold you all accountable, God
certainly will.

Subject: Drag Queen Story Hour
While I heartily approve of encouraging reading by children I find reading to littles by people dressed in drag totally
inappropriate. I have nothing against those who choose to entertain adults in drag but children do not have the world
experience to understand the concept.
Please discontinue the practice in our local libraries for which I pay taxes.
Thank you for hearing my thoughts,
Barbara L Fleming
Lorraine Conyac
I am greatly disturbed that you would continue the Drag Queen Story Time for children. This is not an appropriate
subject for young children to be learning about through a public agency such as the library. Exposure to this
lifestyle will come and it should be up to the parents to explain the ramifications of this not, a public library.

Jackson and Jensen cut through pervasive denial about humanity’s destiny in a more hostile
environment. As in an effective seminar, they posit a situation and then raise questions that will resonate
with readers.
HISTORY
Teaching White Supremacy: America’s Democratic Ordeal and the Forging of Our National Identity
By Donald Yacovone
Amid the current culture war with its battles over public school boards, curricula, and libraries, this
accessible, thoroughly documented, and well-reasoned work is essential reading for all interested in truly
understanding America’s past and the systemic distortions to repress and restrict the historical narrative
with an insidious ideology.
PREMIUM
Animals Under the Swastika
By J. W. Mohnhaupt
The ultimate value of this work is in establishing how, as the author says, “deeply dangerous ideas were
anchored even in areas of life supposedly not affected by ideology.” Recommended for academic
libraries with a focus on history.
Formidable: American Women and the Fight for Equality, 1920–2020
By Elisabeth Griffith
This is a fantastic and enjoyable book tracing 100 years of work and struggle for women’s equality. A
great book for general readers and a must read for anyone interested in women’s and American political
history.

Dear Librarian,
ABCmouse Home Access for Libraries provides unlimited access to the same full version of
ABCmouse Early Learning Academy that consumers subscribe to. It can be used by several
children in the same household—all at the same time—each with their own avatar, profile, and
progress-tracking on their respective ABCmouse Step-by-Step Learning Paths.
Here’s just one example of positive feedback from a librarian about ABCmouse, with several
more examples included near the end of this email:
"ABCmouse Home Access for Libraries is one way the Detroit Public Library is
encouraging children to read every day. The games and activities are fun and
educational and, based on their heavy use, children are enjoying them. It is the type of
resource that many families in our community would not have access to, except through
the Library. ~ Margaret Bruni, Director for Public Services for the Detroit Public Library
ABCmouse stimulates a child’s enthusiasm for learning through more than 10,000 fun-filled
learning activities—including more than 2,000 STEM and over 1,200 Spanish-language learning
activities—consisting of books, educational games, puzzles, art activities, poems, songs, music
videos, and more. And our 2,000+ book titles can be accessed by Age Level, Guided Reading
Level, or Lexile Level.
An added bonus with ABCmouse Home Access for Libraries is the inclusion of our
independently-validated Assessment Center—an extra-cost option for consumers—which creates
customized lessons that are targeted to help a child improve in specific skill areas identified by
the assessments.
ABCmouse is truly a world-class educational resource and your patrons and their children will
benefit tremendously by making it available to them at home!

“We are excited to launch this service on September 1 that will allow Sonoma County families to
“checkout” access to ABCmouse to use at their home… With this service, children will now have
remote access to ABCmouse through their local library for free. The service also supports our
strategic plan goals to provide educational and recreational experiences that spark lifelong
learning, and to prepare parents and their children for entry into the K-12 school system.” ~
Susan Hildreth, Interim Library Director, Sonoma County Library, CA
“Parents and children alike are elated to find out that they can [access ABCmouse] for in home
use. Many of our members could not afford it otherwise. Children and parents often ask for
computer games to play while in the library. The children's staff always directs them to ABC
Mouse where they learn and have fun at the same time. Parents are thankful, often praise the
collaboration, and hope to see more opportunities like this in the future.” ~ Elizabeth
Braunworth, Children’s and Teen Librarian at the Main Library of Palm Beach County Library
“I love, love, love ABCmouse.com. We’ve had tons of kids playing games on our computers this
summer. Now we have quality education games we can refer them to all in one place at
ABCmouse.com.” - July Hisel, Director of Wilson (IA) Memorial Library
I don't know how ABCmouse.com does it, but it gets through to my daughter in no way that I
could, and I'm so happy. I've also seen my daughter learn other things that I did not expect;
she has become much better at using a mouse to interact with the computer, and she is also
coming to understand the value of tickets (and hopefully money in real-life and down the road)
and using them sparingly and deciding which gifts have the most value. ~ Jason Molen (patron
of Santa Clara County Library)
I love ABCmouse! My son started speech therapy about a year ago and I feel as if ABC Mouse
aided him speaking faster. He is much more confident and apt to speak now that he routinely
does activities on the website! Using it through the library program is amazing and much
appreciated! ~ Charmae Martin (patron of Daly City Public Library)
I think the ABCmouse.com is a great way to help kids become excited about learning. It is the
perfect combination of fun and learning. A parent can feel good about this type of screen time
and the site engages the whole family! I use the site with my (just turned) 5-year- old and my
(about to be) 9-year-old. My 5-year-old has definitely added to his letter recognition and letter
sound recognition directly from playing on ABCMouse.com. ~ Elizabeth LiVolsi (patron of Contra
Costa County Library)
Here’s the ABCmouse Curriculum Scope and Sequence as of 2020. There are now well over
10,000 learning activities in ABCmouse:

On August 16, 2021, the US Bureau of Reclamation announced the first official water
shortage declaration for the Colorado River. For the seven states along its course, this
means new restrictions and a changed relationship not only to the river, but also to each
other. Artists participating in Along the Colorado explore the issues surrounding life and
the communities along the Colorado River.
