2022 Summer Programs recap, student projects, social No images? Click here
highlight, and more!

Dear Jeff,

I hope you are enjoying the final weeks of summer. Girls Who Code has been busy this
season with thousands of students from around the world participating in our free summer
programs. Through our 2-week Summer Immersion Program and 6-week Self-Paced
Program they have learned valuable computer science skills, gained exposure to careers
in technology, met women in technical roles, and joined a supportive sisterhood.

GWC students have practiced coding in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript through hands-on real-world
projects in art, storytelling, web sites, apps and more. We are so proud of our students who
overcame challenges, persisted, and built lifelong friendships.

Read on to learn about a few summer student projects, like Anika’s Book Banning Activist
Toolkit and Delyla’s self-illustrated personality quiz. We also recently hosted an NYC Intern
Meetup, an opportunity for tech interns and GWC alumni to gather and network with each
other. Check out our social media highlights below and give us a follow!

I look forward to sharing more updates in the coming months as well as our plans for
celebrating GWC’s 10th Anniversary! Thank you for your support and dedication. We can’t
do it without you.

Yours in sisterhood,
Laura

EXPLORE STUDENT PROJECTS

The Activist Toolkit: For their culminating summer project, students identified and explored
a cause they care about. After finding resources, researching, and focusing their message,
they built a website to make it actionable. Anika M. (SIP student, Rocklin, CA) built a
website called Books Uncensored, which seeks to support unrestricted access to banned
books that deal with difficult topics and embrace underrepresented groups.
Personality Quiz: Using their knowledge of functions, conditionals, and flowcharts, SPP
students created personality quizzes where users click on photos to select their answers
to questions and at the end receive a message about themselves. Check out Delyla’s
Buddies—a self-illustrated quiz by Delyla S. (SPP Student, Seattle, WA) that identifies what
type of buddy you are.

BACK TO SCHOOL
Interested in renewing your gift? As the new school year approaches, we are excited to

LOOKING AHEAD
Girls Who Code is celebrating its 10th Anniversary! Our programs have come a long way
since our founding in 2012. What started as one Summer Immersion Program in a
borrowed conference room with 20 students, has grown into a robust suite of
programming for young women and nonbinary community members from elementary
school to early career. It is hard to believe that we are stepping into our second decade as
an organization and have now served over 500,000 students! Stay tuned for an exciting
announcement on how we plan to celebrate this milestone with our community and
beyond!

Thank you, Rebecca, for having me on.

Here are some ideas for September. Let me know if you like these or I can come up with others.

September is Library Card Sign-up month. Find out everything you can do with the power of a
library card from free New York Times access, to free museum passes, and of course books.

September is Hispanic Heritage Month. Highlight library events and three books coming out in
September.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Woman of Light by Kaji Fajardo-Anstine
Witches by Brenda Lozano

Last week in September is Banned Books Week. I can talk about a few books that are high on the
American Library Association banned books list and we protecting the freedom to read is
important. (This one could be controversial but I can change up the tone a bit if you like this
idea.)

Let me know your thoughts and what day works best for September.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff!
My name is Fil Corbitt and we emailed briefly a few years ago when my band recorded a music
video at the downtown library. Hope all is going well.

I'm also a radio journalist and I'm writing to see if there is another Drag Queen Story Time
planned this year. I'd like to do a story about it, focussing on the event and what it actually is.
Obviously, it's been a pretty wild flashpoint, but I think a lot of people only have a general idea
of what it looks like, and I would like to understand it more deeply. Is there another being
planned?

Best!

Jeff has let me know that now is the time to set up a meeting to talk about

Subject: Request for grant support, Cold Springs Community Center Library Kiosk
Dear Celia and Bob,
It was so great talking with you both today! As I mentioned we are writing a
grant to support the installation of a vending machine (kiosk) that will circulate
library materials (print, video, tech, etc.) at a place in our service area that
presents challenges for library access (such as Cold Springs and Red Rock being
so far away from the branch with traffic compounding access, etc.)
While the grant is targeted for placement in the Cold Springs area, it will allow us
to chose the most appropriate site when developing the project. Initially, based
on our conversations and after reviewing the Community Center location, I
recommend a partnership with the library and your parks team to host the kiosk
at the Cold Springs Community Center.
Unfortunately, our grant deadline is quick (tomorrow, Jan. 28th). If possible we
would love to have a short letter of support from you both expressing the
benefits to the community if we were able to install the kiosk.
Attached is a photo of the new kiosk being launched with the Incline Library, so
you have an idea of what we are proposing. This project would require very little
from the parks team other than allowing us to use a host site for the machine.
Library staff would maintain and manage all other parts of this service.
If you are able to voice your support for this grant, and return a word document
to me today, I will happily include that in our grant application to strengthen our
ask.
Thank you so much for considering this request and for your partnership with the
library!
Sincerely,
Jonnica

Jeff has let me know that now is the time to set up a meeting to talk about
logistics of installation and providing service. Please advise who from your Parks
team should be at the table for this discussion and what a good time/place
might be to get together. We can certainly do a virtual meeting if that is
preferred or meet on-site at the community center if needed for review.
I look forward to expanding our partnership and service level to the community
in Cold Springs!

If you are able to voice your support for this grant, and return a word document
to me today, I will happily include that in our grant application to strengthen our
ask.
Thank you so much for considering this request and for your partnership with the
library!
Sincerely,
Jonnica

Library Kiosk

Hi Bob and Celia,

You may have have heard that the BOCC approved our grant this week to
move forward with purchasing the new book vending machine that will be
hosted at the Cold Springs Community Center.

Sincerely,

Jonnica

If you are able to voice your support for this grant, and return a word document
to me today, I will happily include that in our grant application to strengthen our
ask.
Thank you so much for considering this request and for your partnership with the
library!
Sincerely,
Jonnica

Explorer update:

The couriers will do their best to get the Explorers out to the branches within the next two weeks. They
are working on some other important deliveries, so there may be a slight delay.

If you need your Explorers before September 1 you may want to stop by RN and pick up a box for your
branch. I may also be able to drop some boxes off if you need them for an outreach or September 1 event
you'd like to promote. Let me know if you need your copies asap and I can work something out with you.

Thanks,

Jamie

Subject: The fall Explorer has arrived!
Hello,

The fall issue of the Explorer arrived at RN yesterday! Boxes will be en route to the branches this week.
The summer issue can be recycled on September 1. NOTE: Before you recycle, please email me with an
estimate of how many you have left.

A digital version of the Explorer is available here:

https://washoecountylibrary.us/events/explorer.php

As always, the pages in the digital copy are full of helpful links. Carly created a promo sign for the digital
copy for use at outreaches. It has a QR code that will take patrons directly to the above link. We
recommend printing it out and putting it in a sign holder for outreach table displays:
Digital Explorer QR Code Sign.pdf

Some highlights for the fall issue:

• RN is our cover star! Thanks to Kris Thomas, our drone pilot, for contributing the cover photo!
• Literary events are featured on pp. 4-5. Take a look at the awesome banned books feature that
Debi Stears contributed!
• Our TeenTober events are featured on p. 13.
• Book a Librarian and Homebound Services are featured on p. 7.
• Library hours and locations are listed on p. 3.
• Our Story Time/PAWS schedule can be found on p. 9.

The Explorer team has created ads in this issue for many of our free resources and upcoming programs.
Please take some time to familiarize yourselves with the content inside.

I am so appreciative of our design/editing team for all their hard work in producing the fall issue!

Talli, Daughter of the Moon, Vol. 1, by Sourya, is one of this week's

awareness and action that belongs in social sciences, history, and
medicine collections and on curricula for high schoolers and up."
And Luigi Musolino's A Different Darkness and Other Abominations
is a starred horror selection. "Worthy of being mentioned alongside

journey through the shadowy Italian countryside, the depths of
human despair, and the heights of imagination."

ordering them for 2022. What are your thoughts about that? Do we want any posters and bookmarks?

Helping Children Transition Between
Activities
For some young children, moving from one activity to another (e.g., playing
with toys to dinner time, playing outside to bath time, watching a movie to
brushing teeth), results in confusion, frustration, or challenging behaviors.
Adults can help children predict what is coming next which helps make smoother
transitions. In this article, you will have some examples of strategies that will
support transitions.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEH Announces $31.5 Million for 226

Humanities Projects Nationwide
Grant awards support collaborative and individual humanities research,
preservation of historic collections, humanities exhibitions and documentaries,
and education programs for teachers
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 16, 2022) — The National Endowment for the
Humanities (NEH) today announced $31.5 million in grants for 226 humanities
projects across the country. These grants will support the publication of a
Library of America anthology and accompanying national public programs
series at 90 public libraries on 400 years of Latino poetry and enable the
development of machine-learning algorithms to compare and classify features
of Realist, Impressionist, and Barbizon School paintings to help art historians
trace the spread of artistic styles.

This round of funding, NEH’s third and last for fiscal year 2022, will support vital
humanities research, education, preservation, and public programs. These
peer-reviewed grants were awarded in addition to $52 million in annual
operating support provided to the national network of state and jurisdictional
humanities councils.

“NEH is proud to support the many scholars, curators, storytellers, filmmakers,

and teachers who are helping preserve, examine, and share the country’s rich
and expansive history and culture,” said NEH Chair Shelly C. Lowe (Navajo).
“From books and documentaries to the preservation of cultural heritage
materials, these 226 exceptional projects will foster the exchange of ideas and
increase access to humanities knowledge, resources, and experiences.”

Among the projects to receive funding are a “Digital Cairo” database and
interpretive website tracking the urban transformation of Cairo during the
nineteenth and early twentieth century using Ottoman-era newspapers and a
historical and archaeological exploration of the Cataract House hotel in Niagara
Falls, New York, an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Additional
grants will enable the development of Booksnake, a mobile app to allow users
to view and manipulate digitized archival materials in augmented reality and
support the creation of legal and ethical protocols for U.S.-based humanities
researchers around data mining of large-scale digital collections of textual
materials held outside of the United States.

NEH grants will also underwrite a new traveling exhibition on Jacob Lawrence’s
1964–65 Nigeria series and the artistic exchange between the African
American painter and his contemporaries in West Africa and support planning
of a bilingual traveling exhibition and public programs examining Mexican
Americans’ representation and participation in American filmmaking from the
1920s to the present. New funding for media projects will make possible a film
about the 400-year history of Shakespeare’s plays since the publication of the
First Folio in 1623 and a documentary on the life and work of Dominican
American writer Julia Alvarez, as well as a podcast series on the history and
legacy of the 1930s Federal Writers’ Project.

New funding for scholarly editions and translations will enable continued work
on several longstanding NEH-supported editorial projects, including the nine-
volume Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861–1867; the
complete works of George and Ira Gershwin; and the collected papers of
influential figures such as Thomas Edison, Jane Addams, and seven U.S.
presidents; and translations of The Divine Tragedy by twelfth-century Sufi
poetʿAṭṭār of Nishapur and oral folktales of the Dena’ina Alaska Native people.
Several newly funded projects will help preserve fragile historical and cultural
collections and make them more accessible to the broader public, such as
grants to safeguard a large collection of zooarchaeological artifacts at the
University of Wyoming Archaeological Repository that shed light on pre-historic
bison hunting practices and funding to protect collections related to the work of
architect Frank Lloyd Wright at his Taliesin West studio and home in Arizona.
NEH Preservation Assistance Grants will help 65 small and mid-sized
museums, libraries, historical societies, and archival repositories improve their
ability to care for significant humanities collections. Among these are grants to
help preserve: the archives of the American Baptist Historical Society; materials
related to the life and work of poet John Ashbery; and digital collections of
records, aerial photography, and oral histories held by the Museum of Flight in
Seattle.

NEH Public Scholars grants, which support popular nonfiction books in the
humanities, will enable publication of 26 new titles, including: a book on Ben
Franklin’s attitudes towards money and finance; a history of Civil War fugitive
slave “contraband camps” and their role in bringing about the 1862
Emancipation Proclamation; a biography of American author Madeline L’Engle;
and an account of the 1980s lawsuit against the CIA on behalf of the unwitting
human subjects of the agency’s Cold War-era MK-Ultra mind control
experiments.

Thirty-seven grants for summer seminars, institutes, and workshops will

provide professional enrichment and research opportunities for K–12
schoolteachers and college faculty on topics such as: the history and cultural
impact of the American automobile industry; Washington D.C.’s FDR Memorial
and its connection to the U.S. disability rights movement; incorporating
veterans’ oral histories into high school level history, social sciences, civics,
and literature classes; and the political, cultural, and economic histories of the
Buffalo Nations of the Assiniboine, Sioux, Blackfeet, Crow, Northern Arapaho,
and Eastern Shoshone.
This round of funding also marks the addition of the 50th U.S. state to the
National Digital Newspaper Program. Dartmouth College received NEH funding
to serve as the hub of the New Hampshire Digital Newspaper Program,
expanding the scope of the Chronicling America online database of historical
American newspapers published between 1690 and 1963. Additional funding
awarded in this round will support ongoing newspaper digitization work in
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, South
Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

A full list of the 226 new awards by geographic location is available here.

Reading Inside and Out | Fall Book Preview

By Jennifer Dayton
The fall book season reflects the times—war, climate change,
disease, social upheaval—lending a decidedly wistful tinge to the
offerings. The last few years have seen people looking inward in a
deeper, more personal way, while they also look outward, striving
to change the social landscape. To this end, readers can anticipate
a new crop of great novels for curling up with and cookbooks to
tempt them back into the warmth of the kitchen, but there are also
books that make readers question notions of home and where they
fit in the world.
Growing Services: Libraries Creating Access for Incarcerated
People
By Chelsea Jordan-Makely, Jeanie Austin, and Charissa Brammer
Library workers who provide services for people negatively
impacted by the prison industrial complex (PIC) are proud of their
work—even though it can be difficult—from starting and keeping
programs going, to carrying the load over time.

Impactful Community-Based Literacy Projects

Lesley S. J. Farmer
"With significant experience as an educator and librarian in many
settings, Farmer is well qualified to write on this topic ... Readers
will find the many resources provided in the text boxes and
references useful. It would be appropriate for professional
collections in both public and academic libraries."
— Catholic Library World
The projects in this book blend early literacy benefits, fundamental
reading skills, and other foundational concepts with culture- or
community-specific sensitivity and leveraging. They’re adaptable
based on age, audience, size, resources, and budget; and most
importantly, they address social inequities and foster cross-culture
interactions.

Helping adult learners achieve their educational and career goals.

Welcome to the Northern Nevada Literacy Council Newsletter.

Since 1978, Northern Nevada Literacy Council, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has
provided free adult basic education programs to help adult learners achieve a high school
equivalency, improve English literacy, earn U.S. citizenship, help out-of-school youth enter
the workforce, and break the cycle of poverty by supporting families build literacy skills in
the home. All programs are offered as a pathway to enter post-secondary education,
vocational training, and employment to empower our community.

NNLC is currently offering classes in Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency

Prep, English Language Arts, Certified Administrative Assistant, and Citizenship across 4
different locations and online. Our main campus is open Monday-Thursday from 8am-8pm
and Friday 8am-2pm.
Please call us at 775-356-1007 for more information or to enroll in classes.

Focus on Success: Congratulations to our graduates!

NNLC continues to graduate our students who
earn their High School Equivalency Certificates
with NNLC. This past week, NNLC held graduation
for our 20 new graduates this quarter. These
students' success in completing their ABE classes
and passing all 5 HiSet tests culminated in a
ceremony held at the Reno-Sparks Chamber of
Commerce.
The graduation ceremony involved a graduation
procession, welcome address and speeches from
NNLC staff, a video address from Senator
Catherine Cortez-Masto, and a presentation of the
graduates with the turning of the tassels. We are
proud of our graduates and looking forward to their
future achievements!
You can watch a Facebook Live recording of our
graduation on our Facebook Page.

arrange for any supportive services and guidance

being his interaction with students.
"It's always for the students, that's why I keep
doing what I do," says Eduardo.
He enjoys working closely with students and

Nevada's Youth: Let's Move Them Forward! with Small Smiles

Through the Learn and Earn program, NNLC
provides youth with career training opportunities for
full-time employment. Together with partnered
businesses, L&E connects youth with the required
education and training and the businesses who want
to hire them. Partners are paired with a NNLC WEX
youth whose beginning training and work hours are
paid by the L&E program.
One of these partners is the Small Smiles Dental
Center. An independent, locally owned dental clinic,
this organization has been caring for the teeth of
Reno children since 2005. A National Health Service
Corps site, Small Smiles seeks to provide accessible
dental care and accepts Nevada Children's Health
Insurance Program, Medicaid, private insurance,
cash payments and a Sliding Fee Scale for the
uninsured facing financial difficulties.

Improving Literacy Starts at Home: Family Reading Program

Our state's literacy and education issue cannot be

solved without addressing literacy in the home. The
Family Reading Program empowers parents to be
their child's first and best teachers and break the
cycle of generational low literacy.
During the school year, the FRP holds monthly
events that include taking home a book and an
interactive reading activity. Summer programs are
held based on community events and timing, and
the latest summer program was held last week as a
Science Night where children learned about primary
and secondary colors, predicted and understood
how colors mix, and saw how different materials
absorb color differently. Families then picked
science-related books to take home.
In addition to starting the normal FRP sessions
soon, a 3-times-a-month parenting class will be
started that focuses on adult literacy and uses
research-based reading strategies to improve literacy in home and how parents can better
help their children learn.
To sign up for any FRP events or learn more, please contact Ma'Kayla at
frpcoord@nnlc.org or call 775-356-1007.

appointed to serve on the Governor's Libraries and Literacy Council for the state of
Nevada. This executive council, made up of representatives of agencies that share
the advancement of library and literacy goals, will assist the state with its
statewide responsibilities. In addition to directly advising the state in addressing
issues concerning literacy, this three-year appointment will help NNLC share the
mission and work of our organization to confront the literacy needs of our
community.
Donor Spotlight: Community Recovery Grant
NNLC is honored and grateful for Governor
Steve Sisolak and the State of Nevada for choosing our organization to be funded
through the Community Recovery Grant program. This program is funded by the
American Rescue Plan and is aimed at helping existing non-profits in the state
provide community services while revitalizing the state's economy. NNLC will use
these funds to support our students achieve their educational and career goals to
improve their lives and becoming more productive community members.
We are looking forward to empowering our community and helping Nevada grow
