Case Study 4 – Fully Integrated System

Student Guide

Objectives:
 Fully integrate two applications and develop a architecture that supports additional application
integration
 Create the appearance of a single system
 Use middleware so that the applications can be distributed and all databases are consistent.
 Develop a test plan that reflects the challenges in testing an integrated system.
 Minimize changes to legacy systems (schema must remain the same or extended, but not
altered)
 Convince your instructor that you have a feasible plan that will produce a quality product on
schedule.

Deliverables:
1) Develop a fully functionally integrated system, where data is only entered once, distributed to
other databases in near real time, using middleware to distribute data.
2) Requirements , design, and test plan/results document
3) Demonstrate integrated system meets all user requirements
4) Updated previous documentation to reflect new vision and architecture

Approach Guidelines:
• Make sure that each team member has a role to play in developing the deliverables.
• Give yourself time to test the system ensure a high quality product.
• Select your middleware early
• You may not have all the information that you need, so you may have to make assumptions or
ask the instructor.
• Try to minimize changes to any applications that you have already developed, such as the GUI.
• Keep your options open as long as possible so that your don’t limit the system too early.
• Use the dashboard GUI to test the system.
• Make sure the system is always in a consistent state, by using middleware products that provide
that capability or through your design.
